I have old bent grass in Washington I hate it thinking of cutting out and taking two inches of dirt out then put in top soil and new sod. What are your thoughts about doing this way????
@PacificNorthwestLawns
2 жыл бұрын
Removing soil and adding other soil is a huge risk at introducing weeds or stirring up dormant weed seeds. You could sod cut it out and replace the sod or use mesotrione to kill the bentgrass and just seed it. It's about the only thing mesotrione is good at, killing bentgrass and nimble will.

I live in Nw Washington, my yard is incredibly uneven due to old stumps (roots are still all over not fat under the grass). Wondering when the best time to kill the lawn is? Spring? Fall?
@PacificNorthwestLawns

Fall is always best. Less weed pressure, less likely to be washed out by rain and the new grass is far more likely to survive the winter than the summer heat.

What would be an approximately fall lawn renovation schedule? Should I be looking to kill off the weeds and lawn in July or August? I want to plan everything out now. Thanks
@PacificNorthwestLawns
3 жыл бұрын
You want the grass roots established prior to the first frost. Find your average first frost date and plan backwards from there. You want the grass germinating 60-75 days prior to the first frost. So the seeding date is going to be dependent on that as well as grass type. Some take longer than others to germinate

I thought, as there is POA around in force, it would be needed to go after their seeds already in the soil by tilling the ground after all the grass was 'taken out' (or is that yet to come) before seeding for the new lawn starts? Also ... I'm looking to do the same next month but I also wanted to bring in some top soil (dirt?) to also do a little leveling before seeding for the Fall/Winter. Any thoughts on that (or is that also in the plans coming up)? I'm eastside of Seattle ... Thanks ...
@PacificNorthwestLawns
4 жыл бұрын
I would never recommend tilling. That just invites way more weed problems. I'm also doing a little bit of leveling with top soil here soon. Don't wait too long to get yours started. You want it to have germinated at least 45 days or more before the first frost. For me that's usually late October.
@alfrede.newman1838
4 жыл бұрын
@@PacificNorthwestLawns Well certainly don't want a new set of issues, however, next season's POA seeds are already in the ground before the lawn kill and putting down a pre-emergent wouldn't seem like a good idea as we want to put down fresh new seed. So how does the latent POA seeds in the ground already go away? Thanks .., p.s. we're probably in the same geography so I do need to shake a leg on starting.
@PacificNorthwestLawns

Can't use a pre emergent and seed. It prevents the seed from germinating. What I'm going to attempt is letting the new grass establish and after about the 3rd mow apply some Prodiamine. I doubt it'll work 100% if at all but I'm not afraid to try it.
