8.5p per kWh on Octopus Go. 5 hours a night is 35 kw 100-140 mile charge. Even on a bad day that’s only 3p per mile. My partner has never charged her e208 on a public charger in over 3 years. I charge my EV 6 4-6 times a year on public charging. My Fiesta diesel panel van is 12p per mile doing 60 miles per gallon. It would be a lot more if I only filled up at the motorway service station.

its one thing to boast about a long warranty (e.g. MG 7 years) but it's another to pay out and honour it for 99% of issues....MG was recently quoted to only pay out on 35% of their warranty claims and the warranty has so many exceptions it's not worth the paper it's written on. Agree, Kia / Hyundai is the way to go and will be on my short list in 2025

I watch 3 daily shows, 5 weekly shows, and all of the EV car & e-bike reviews I can source from the US, England, Norway, Germany, New Zealand, and ever South Africa. And only 1 weekly show ever mentions Climate Change which is the reason any of us are experiencing EVs cars and E-bikes. I find it extremely discouraging, as it comes across as journalists attentping to appeal to the broadest range of viewers including Climate Deniers and Climate Delayers. It's like having a dieting and nutrition discussion where you never mention the risks and quality of life problems of obesity, pretending that it's really a choice to eat poorly or healthily that everyone should consider based on how big an infotainment screen or ADAS system works. If EVs and ICE were equivalent choices and this army of journos don't have a care about our transition off of fossil fuels, you'd be testing and comparing and reviewing ICE cars too. Will you consider how your message to the viewing public could be appreciably more compelling if you'd stop avoiding the word Climate and started messaging about the immediacy of the Climate Crisis, including choosing efficient and low impact EVs?

OK. Charging. Here we go. On 20 September, I picked up my 1st ever EV. I am leasing a Tesla Model Y. I sold my diesel C-Max and used the funds from that as my down payment. I'm paying £204 per month, 2 years, for a rear drive car. 1 pedal driving? LOVE IT! I'll never go back to ICE. I have deliberately gone for the worst route possible, to prove the nay-sayers wrong! I don't get have my Zappi - that comes next year. I'm on a 2kW granny lead or public charging. Here's my trick. My solar array can comfortably charge my Tesla for FREE! Doing the maths, that works out to 0p per mile. Yes, I need the sun to shine. I haven't even switched to an overnight tariff yet. I'm deliberately trying to prove that the benefits of an EV exceed any defecits. I LOVE my EV! By the way, the lease is costing me less than the depreciation + the service plan that I was in. The cost of diesel monthly is more than any electricity costs. EVs are just so serene to drive.

My wife drives 30 miles per week and having an ice car doing so little millage isn't great for its engine. She went fully electric with a Mini SE earlier this year and averages 4.2 miles per kilowatt. Switching to an ev tarriff would cost us more for the energy usage during the day vs the tiny charger required per week so we went with British Gas fixed until next year, an impromptu top up would be done at 23p per kW otherwise half price electric on a Sunday with British Gas so 11.5p per kW and costs my wife about 85p per week 😂 that would be £3.78 per week in her old fiesta that did 45mpg. Its worth maybe just considering with rising energy costs and falling oil prices putting up a weekly comparison figure e.g. fot an EV to be cheaper to run you have to pay less than X pence per kW this week. I see that petrol here in Glasgow is £1.29 per litre so £5.86 per gallon and assuming 45mpg thats 13p per mile therefore assuming 3.5 miles per kW in an EVs to be as or more efficient you would need to pay less than 43p per kW on the majority of your journeys. So even at the October price cap of 24.5p per kW its much cheaper than petrol. Charging outside of home you need to be aware of the above calculation though. Any chance electrifying could do start a weekly fule price checkin using a fixed calculation like the above to give people a single figure to use as a rough gide each week?

Enjoyed the KHH as usual so thank you. The top of your broadcast was about negative press about EV running costs. What is astonishing about electrical fill up is the range of pricing with off peak home charging as low as £0.10 kwh and rapid charging say at worst £0.80 kwh. If you have home renewables you may even fill up at £0.00 kwh. I live on a small farm and can fill up at either £0.00 kwh or £0.15 kwh if I have to use off peak. I have a friend who lives on floor 25 in a tower near Canary Wharf who would have to use public charging as he has no charging available at home or at work (nearby in Eastcheap). So for quite a large proportion of the population cheap charging is not a reality and petrol is just so much simpler and more reliable. One change of habit would be to fill up little and often with lec rather than letting the battery run dry and doing so wherever relatively cheap AC charging is available and you are at rest for some time. A benefit of this is that you almost certainly will not need a car with a huge, heavy, and expensive battery which is a whale to drive and has just lost 30-50% in depreciation when you took it out of the showroom. However the press have a point that an EV is not practical yet for many city dwellers who can not charge at home.

I've had an IONIQ 5 for 3 years, and don't have a home charger. I use a mix of charging sources, and because of the wildly different prices and range differences over the course of the year it's hard to give a solid overall cost but in winter when the range is down to 180 miles it's anywhere from 15p (local, 7kWh charger @ 41p) to 31p (Instavolt @85p) per mile. In the summer when I'm everaging 250 miles of range that drops to 11p and 22p per mile respectively. The A-Class I had before would have worked out at around 22p per mile purely on cost of fuel and range. The diesel BMW 2-Series I had 8 years ago would have cost 18p per mile if it still had the same MPG today. So for me it can be significantly more expensive to run what is already far and away the most expensive car I've ever owned. When I eventually move house I'll have a charger at some, and may well become one of the smugs bragging about how much cheatper it is.

I think the leapmotor T03 should be called the Tory. This name not only suits the car but it would be a good way to tease the conservative and right-leaning newspapers like The Sun and the telegraph by claiming there electric car is built by the Conservative Party to begin with. It would certainly prove Jeremy Vines point that politicians ‘invented the electric car’ and the press would go nuts with it and start spouting nonsense about how the Conservative Party is promoting and investing in Chinese automakers and it would give leapmotor lots of publicity as a brand! 😂

I never reset the trip meter on my Ioniq 6 and hit 30,000ks last week for 13.6kwh per 100k, which if my math is correct, converts to 4.6 miles to the kWh. The vast majority of my charging is off a destination charger at work (320 KW solar system on the roof) for free, with DC charging only on long trips. I've spent $412 AUD (which would be about $260 pounds?) total on charging.

In 2010 we took the airplane from Amsterdam to Munich at 09.00, bought a new Smart Fortwo at a German dealer, (€5.000 cheaper than in Netherlands). The dealer put winterwheels on it, the 4 summerwheels in the back, and drove over 1000km through huge winterstorm back to Amsterdam. Arrived at 04.00 in the morning next day. Occasionally I have to charge the ID7 away from home for a long work trip but I can generally plug it in to a slow charger for a top up wherever I'm working. The fast charging network is a last resort. I'm no EV fanboy..... I also have a VW T6 camper - there's no suitable electric alternative for that on the market yet as far as I'm concerned!!! The ID7 is a company purchase for BIK purposes. The Mokka fits my wife's needs perfectly as she doesn't make long trips - but I'm so disappointed with The Telegraph coverage - which seriously undermines their journalistic credibility.

I did a calculation on fuel costs after the first year (12,000 miles) in our Tesla M3RWD. Previously we had an ageing Mk5 1.2l VW Polo, so in terms of luxury, performance and size of car, there is no comparison. We saved nearly £1500 in fuel cost over the first year. We do have the benefit of a home charger and Intelligent Octopus rates, which will cover most of our charging needs. If we need rapid charging we will generally use Tesla chargers (usually the cheapest and always work). The charger cost £1000 (inc installation) but that means we have repaid that cost plus still saved nearly £500 in one year.

In my experience 90% of my charging is done at home paying 7p per kWh and is less than 2p per mile for my Tesla Model 3. For the occasional long trip I fully charge before leaving home then top up the minimum to get me home at the cheaper Tesla Chargers. They should have started with an earlier push to plug in hybrids with a 35 mile range. This would result in many people who charged at home realising they hardly ever used the petrol engine. It would also result in far less business at petrol stations which would have closed many. The logical move to full EV would then be a small step driven by fewer fuel stations and far more chargers.

So why wouldn't these people you say don't have £190 per Month to spare, do like you did and get a much cheaper used car? After all, you did. Try not to lose sight of the fact that what may be right for you, isn't necessarily right for everyone else.. It would be impossible for all of us to drive around in much older cars. Ah, Sunday morning and more BS from the EV-mentalists…. STOP TALKING ABOUT THE PRICE OF BRAND NEW EV CARS and please talk about EV motorway charging costs, depreciation of EVs, the collapse of the second-hand EV values and the fact that you don’t pay road duty…

@@keithhooper6123 let’s hope so, they need to pay their way. It should be 100x the tax for ICE’s because they don’t pay fuel tax

@@BobTheBlue Wrong. There is 20% VAT imposed on public charging, and 5% on home electricity. If you don't like paying fuel duty using earnings you already paid tax on, then get an EV.... And you don't pay a fair price for petrol and diesel. If all the taxpayer funded subsidies handed to the oil industry over the decades, hadn't happened, you fuel would cost 4 or 5 times what it now does.

Unless we go somewhere other than our normal stuff during the week and weekend, I only charge my car once every 3-4 weeks and that is still cheaper than my previous diesel if I only used a fast charger. Charging at home is still cheaper than the ioniq PHEV I had.
