She was known for very dramatic gestures. The shadow in the background is doing sort of an impression of her. And yes in some films she slapped people. That's why everyone is slapping. Made sense at the time- but now that I look back, it's really pretty funny.

The song mentions 3 great stars of the 1930's, Garbo, Harlow, and Davis. That's quite a trio. Greta Garbo was a star in the silent era (before 1927). She was mysterious and "vanted to be left alone". She suddenly stopped making movies at the height of her career. Jean Harlow was famous for her platinum blonde hair, and for dying of kidney failure at 26, in 1937. In the early 1930's, Bette Davis was the most ferocious hell-cat the screen had ever seen. She had a brilliant career, won two Oscars, lived until 1989.

Hi, Jamal. I really love your reaction vids. Bette Davis was the recipient of several very famous slaps in some of her movies, and slapped a child, herself, in another one. I've always assumed that was the reference they were making with all the dancers "slapping" each other. However, they could also be referencing an "apache" dance, which was a French dance where the dancers simulate slapping and other abusive behavior. There is an old I Love Lucy episode where Fred and Ethel do their version of an "apache" dance.

Kim Carnes had the best version (released in 1981), if you ask me. But Jackie DeShannon was nothing to dismiss, either; although, I wasn't a big fan of her music style. Jackie's original version was released in 1975. Both artists were talented, but I always felt that Kim Carnes was way more talented! Bette Davis, the actress, was fierce in her day and loaded with attitude! She was a force to be reckoned with, and her movie roles exuded the same! Thanks for the reaction, Jamel! 💙✌

The slapping was recalling numerous films where Bettie Davis was slapped, the most iconic was a literally beat down by Olivia de Havilland in Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte, but also including, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf and This is Our Life. I just fell in love with Kim Carne's singing but I had to admit she did sound a lot like Rod Stewart. While she was a success in her own right her greatest contribution was as a song writer.

1950 was arguably her best role with "All About Eve" (Best Picture & Davis Oscar nominated) , but the '50's were actually a fallow period for her career, overall. From '35 w/her Oscar win for "Dangerous" till the late '40's , Davis was the queen of Warner Bros. She and Joan Crawford had a spectacular resurgence with '62's "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane". Davis' last Best Actress nomination.
