Poor Kim Gwang Suk. She was the one who had the most difficult and unique routine, hit all the handstands and had the highest thakchev. The only thing wrong was that step in the dismount.

She's from North Korea. She was a kid. Was she supposed to tell them no, I refuse to compete? You act like she's some criminal mastermind that set out to fool the system.

Apparently she lost her teeth in a training accident. But, what I find more interesting is that the govt. of N Korea listed her at age 16 for multiple years. If they hadn't falsified I think we'd have seen a lot of her in subsequent years. She had a lot of talent, but the bad choices her country made hurt her reputation badly.

She wasn’t underscored; she made a mistake on the dismount. Lu Li had a flawless routine, hence she earned the gold.

@LMA629 I don't think she retired. I think she was and North Korea were banned from competing because of her age scandal, which was very unfortunate since it looked like she hadn't even peaked yet. It would have been wonderful to see what she could have achieved as a more mature gymnast.
@QueenieQue

Kim Gwang Suk had MUCH better handstands, better overall flow, and higher amplitude. She also had more difficult pirouetting than did Lu Li. And of course Lu Li had "better stalder work" because Kim Gwang Suk didn't have any stalders! As much as I appreciate both gymnasts, I think Suk's routine was more dynamic and would have given her the gold even with the bent knees on the jaegar and the tiny step on the dismount.

What a shame for that step on the dismount. If she had stuck that landing, I wonder if she also would've scored a ten and shared that gold medal with Li Lu. Because while her form wasn't as good as Li's, her content is amazing.
@rolandgreen7484
5 ай бұрын
I think with that content it would be pretty impossible to deny her a 10. She got it at the 91 worlds with the same routine but a mere double tuck dismount. Not sure if upgrading the dismount was even a good idea or not.
@todosobretodo

Yes ... but be sure to watch Lu Li's routine. She did win the gold, and completely deserved it! Tatiana Gutsu and Shannon Miller also deserved their medals. Had Kim held the landing, she would have at least tied for one of them. In contrast, her form was a little bit sloppy.

I 100000% agree with you, Bars has improved, and this sort of bar stuff is amazing, the good thing about the new COP is that if you 'should' win, you will win, despite how you perform on the day. Floor, which is traditionally the favourite for spectators, has become painful, boring, tedious and like a compulsory....beam too really...

Her front teeth were missing at the 1989 Worlds. They did not 'grow in' by the 1992 Olympics either. I think she was probably about 10-11 at '89 Worlds and probably 14 by the Games.

Thats very insightful, I really think EVERYONE wants to see a change in this Code, which is why I thought 4 tumbles had become the max in floor, but then i see at the glasgow grand prix (in oct) people doing 5 still...Has the new code come in now?.... Your idea is really interesting though.
@Stone.Ng88

@QueenieQue Not just because of the bent knees. Lu Li's was higher. Also, in that code, the scores were so high that it was mandatory to stick. Kim could have gotten a 9.9 for her step.

Katelyn Ohashi could not complete a DTY that wasn't completely scary in June. That would have sunk her chances had she had to do a FTY instead. She could easily have medalled on beam and she's strong on bars but she does need more honing on floor and especially vault to be a top all-arounder. I do not think the age limit should be scrapped, but lowered by a year. 14 turning 15, right now it's 15 turning 16.
@lepetitpoulet

That's where the old school vs new school diverge. Lu Li had PERFECT execution and less difficulty than kim gwang-suk, who had very obiously bent knees on her jager an a step on the landing. Her routine would've been rewarded much better today, but what can you do? I think new code makes UB more interesting and fair, the vault a lot more fair, beam skills are more varied now: it's not just back handsprings step out layouts, but FX suffers badly. They should make alterations for the FX IMHO.
@bbhouk1
14 жыл бұрын
@moopoo66 what do you mean she wouldn't have medalled? Lu Li (the winner) got a perfect 10 and according to you that step was a whole tenth off which if she had not taken it would have given her a score of 10.12 (impossible!) Back then (before the new code) they deducted by 0.025 rather than whole tenths. they probably took half a tenth so she still wouldn't have won, but your logic was entirely off. Did nobody see the bent knees in the straddled Jaeger?
@espinaca79

@moopoo66 No, I don't think so. I think they deducted her for the lack of form and not poiting her toes also.

I totally agree. They say its to protect gymnasts from injuries but c'mon!! If katelyn ohashi could've competed at this past olympics, than she would have medaled for sure. And won't she have potential to get more injuries, training at the same intensity until 2016? Whereas all the girls on this team are fit to retire if they want, and now are less likely to get injured?

@QueenieQue this isnt the same as the 97 Worlds. Gina's routine was quite simple and basic compared to all the finalists. Lu Li's routine stil was quite difficult and original, the 2nd most of all the finalists after Gwang Suk. Gina also had nothing special about her routine, Lu Li's form and speed of delivery were amazing and clearly the best. Kui also had impeccable form, Gwang Suk clearly did not in this routine. I would agree Gwang Suk was robbed of a medal but not the gold.
