I was very privileged to have gotten to speak with him on more than one occasion at the Salt Lake City library. What an extraordinary human being. Just knowing him changed the way I look at life and the way that I address others. He was absolutely amazing to watch read and he held everything in his head. I'm glad some of my children got to meet him as well. And his father was unbelievable he was so patient and so kind. I know they've got a special place in heaven.

I'm kinda torn on this, because normally i would say that no parent should ever have their kids die before themselves. But in this case, it might have been for the best. But then again, it must have been painful beyond BELIEF to lose his son. His dad dedicated his ENTIRE life to take care of his son. It doesn't get much more selfless than that.

@@andrewcomments5812 I lost my youngest son 6 years ago a week after his 26th birthday . Losing your child is the most unimaginable never ending heart wrenching hell and agony . Before watching this I certainly would have never wished this on any parent but the whole time I was watching this all I kept thinking was "What is going to happen to him when his Father dies" , I was literally terrified for him , when the thought came to me that the best possible thing would be for him to pass before his Father , at the very same time I was completely overwhelmed with guilt and felt horrible , how could I possibly want and hope such a thing as this for another parent , how could I have felt relief and "glad" about such a thing , but in this case it really is the best way for it to happen , for both of them . The world lost 2 truly wonderful special people .

People who aren’t Nuro typical will sometimes parrot others. Maybe in the past his father or someone he met along the way made that comment. Just because he said the metaphor doesn’t mean he necessarily understand it. If a metaphor was said out of context or not explained he would most likely not understand the meaning of it. However he understands the importance of his father and in the past the metaphor was probably explained to him. He understands that metaphor because he was told what it symbolized between him and his father.

I think there’s something that goes on in their brain when they deliver a child with disabilities. The fathers are able to maintain their sanity, but the women all go at least a little hysterical. This is anecdotal, of course, obtained by observing my patients’ family structures (or lack there of) but it would be interesting if there was an actual study. As a social worker by trade, every day I work one-on-one with marginalized populations of human beings - drug addicts, homeless, special needs, etc. It never ceases to amaze me how beneath these surface characteristics that most people focus on and use to pigeonhole these individuals into a certain category lies the most brilliant gifts and talents that too often remain unnurtured and unnoticed. This could have very easily been the case with Kim Peek. Very early on in his life, as this documentary illustrates, there were people - even professionals like the golfing neurologist - who were ready to give up on Kim and lock him away somewhere like he was a secret to be ashamed of. Had it not been for the undying love of his father, this would have most likely been the case. Unfortunately, not everyone is blessed or lucky enough to be born to such patient and compassionate parents. While this story is very touching, my hope is that it also serves as a reminder to us all. There are far too many people in our society that we have a tendency to forget About as if they have nothing of value to offer the world. And the only way that will change is if we all change.

I met Kim Peek when I was younger. He was amazing and sweet person. Books are the root to knowledge and understanding and Kim devoured them like candy. He had a book when I met him and we talked about it in detail. I loved it. Also, that's how I learn too. Reading and writing is my favorite thing ever. My savant is a little different. I am very good at math and programming as well remembering. I can understand new words without a concept because I can relate them to others. I am obsessed with science and engineering too. I also was diagnosed with savant syndrome in my teenage years by two neurologist's and a neuroscientist. There was science tests done in the 90's and they gathered people who were diagnosed and we all took tests to help gather information to help learn what it is. We have unique brains, some people have injury to their brains causing the savant syndrome but some are born. I am like Kim I was born with a unique brain causing unique brain activity. I have an unknown neurological condition. I myself was told I was retarded too but that changed when science changed. My mom was my assistant. She taught me how to do things but I still need assistance and I am 41. I am a female with an IQ score of 200 and above. I am mentally blind in my right eye but I can see. I have speech processing disabilities but I can hear. My brain is incapable of processing speech. I have movement difficulties and sensory overload disabilities as well. Seizures are the worst part. Having a handicap doesn't make me different my brain makes me different. We all are unique characteristics living inside billion's of living cells working together to build our bodies. I use to stay up all night talking to my mom about science and everything I read. I am not a retard, I am above average genius. It's not common so it seems to everyone else I am odd and different. Most people are understanding. I haven't had a mean person attack me for being different. It was my family who abused me and my mom saved me from my father's family. They got help and now they are helping me to live on my own with assistance from the government and county. I had to choose who adopted me after my mom passed away from cancer too. My adopted mom is Lisa. I live in my own apartment with my cat Ginger Beans too. I moved in on July 17th 2010 at 3:00 pm. There were 50 people who came to help me move in because I have lots of friends who were very excited for me. My community is my family. Also, when you are above average genius you can create character's in your imagination and have conversations with yourself. I am very good at writing because I can imagine everything in detail and use words in complex construction. I draw like a professional without learning as well. I can draw a photo as it is from the camera. People are my muse you guys teach me how to be human. Without you guys I would be lost. KZitem is my favorite place too because I get to save everything and rewatch my favorite videos and comment. I don't comment back. It's uncomfortable for me to say something back. I listen so I can relate and have something to say back but I don't like commenting back so I don't. It's respectful and helpful for both me and others when I listen. I can help others who don't have a voice.

As a severely High Functioning Autistic (Aspergers Syndrome) individual, I can understand what kim peek went through.. I was diagnosed when I was 10 yesrs old, I still find it really challenging (now that I'm in my late 20's) to communicate & understand people most of the time.. Many people says that I'm an insane individual.. But on the plus side I'm working on my academics (while working full time as a artificial intelligence research assistant) to become a research scientist.. Thank you soo much for sharing this clip.. 🤓🤓🧠🧠🔥🔥🌟🌟

"My dad and I share the same shadow." I wonder if he was speaking factually and not metaphorically. Maybe he noticed one sunny day that his shadow and his dad's were one, due to the angle of the sun. Still an awesome statement!

I feel more-so that friends and family of Fran and his dad would often say that they shared the same shadow. Although he may not be able to fully understand this statement, he knows that it means well and people he loves say it often (my opinion)

Although Kim Peek has already passed away, I would have loved to know what would have happened if he had enough curiosity and will power to memorize addition and subtraction tables, and multiplication and division tables. I realize his lack of basic conceptual encoding prohibited him from (as his dad says from 10:35 to 10:46) reasoning out mathematical problems. But since he could take in so much more information than the average human, I would be rather curious as to see how far he could actually go in being guided in responding correctly to mathematical problems. Since the average person's ability to do math comes from simple representations in the mind of units, values, operations, functions, and more importantly: equal, simpler representations closer to the solution, I don't think that the average person dwells on a mathematical problem because the average person has already developed memory-based shortcuts for faster computations. That being said, this problem of computation ability lies mostly with your average person's working memory capacity. Of course, a long computation for a long and tedious math, physics, or engineering problem has different parts. But many of these individual parts can be isolated, simplified, and refined into simpler equal mathematical values and representations. So... I wonder how far he could actually go with a lot of paper (if he could write), perhaps computer assistance, maybe a leading cognitive neuroscientist (who might be leading the curious research), and just how far his 'working memory' could go. [I also think Kim Peek may have been very well tested in this arena, since it is his significant weak spot and since he and his father were obviously very open to the rest of the world for study.]

Wow that was amazing! I love that he talks normal and then a deep gravelly in even growley voice with maybe a laugh tone in it! It seems to me that these body's act in a way as to limit our natural unlimitedness and when these body's are slightly off or not right.... some of our genius abilities and unexplained beauty of our souls come through. Maybe I've not worded it right but I think some people will get me! I loved this documentary... I like knowing about extraordinary people!!! Especially Kim Peek. A truly extraordinary and unique human soul!

I have a similar real life story with a person like that, ends kinda sad but... When I was in college I knew a kid that had autism and everybody was kinda like mean to him.. However was so fucking smart, and I was a complete dumbass but I was one of the cool kids, so I figured if I befriend this person nobody would bother him anymore, he would love it and I get him to do all my assignments for free and I pass! So I started bringing him with me everywhere, to parties, to my house, introduced him to all my friends, girls, late night parties and he was loving that life and because he was so incredibly smart in parties people would literally gather around him and would just ask him questions and he just fuckin knew everything, he was incredible. As months passed by we became close and I was so influenced by his innocence and his pure heart and the more I saw that the worse I felt because I knew that I was just making him hang out with me so he can do my assignments, which he LOVED doing for some reason. I used to justify it to myself by saying I am really increasing his social skills by basically giving him a social life and in return he does my assignments which I swear he would finish them always overnight, no matter how long or complicated! Anyways I then started to really open up to him and tell him how I feel fake, and this whole cool popular kid persona is all fake, and at my core I am lonely and miserable and I wish I could be as open and honest as him where I feel like he hides nothing or doesn't' need to impress anybody. I was slowly being super influenced by him and kinda wanted to be like him, he taught me so many things which is ironic because he literally used to sit alone in a corner drinking Pepsi and eating chips in COLLEGE! He told me that everything most humans do stems from their personality which is basically layers and layers of masks built since childhood to protect you from your fears. He said until you are comfortable removing everything your personality will grow thin and erode with time and just like a bad tooth filling job, will slowly start to get sensitized and your fears will be exposed. Never really dealing with them and never really being without them, as long as u r stuck in this image of your that you are trying to hold just so society can view you in a certain way you will be in a permanent state of limbo. That conversation was so deep .I teared.. I spent all week thinking about his words how powerful they are, and how no more real words have ever been said to me.. I took a week off UNI to self reflect then went back and found out he got in a rage incident in the cafeteria lashed out at a student and security and they locked him up in a mental health ward.. they didn't allow me to visit them and I had a fight with security because I told them to let me take him home to his family where they can take care of him but they never let me.. My visa was already about to run out in a few days I had to leave.. I left Australia and went back to my home country and never heard from him again.. he was an amazing human with a pure heart and very similar to this guy in this video.. i hope he is doing well and one day if I see him I know we will be best friends again.
