@marc smith It was crippled by the manufacturers when it became standard in the 30s. Roberts made it for intermediate or long actions with a COAL of about 3 inches. The manufacturers decided to put it in a short action with a COAL of 2.778 and then SAAMI decided to drop the pressure to 51000 'because of 'weak' 93 and 94 Mauser actions' which is a farce as they were designed for the 7 x 57 at 56,000 and proofed to 125%. Anything from the K98 on can take 58000 psi easy and the if you throat the chamber you can get 100 grain bullets doing 3200 fps from a 22 inch barrel (add 100 for 24 inch).

I've used round-nose bullets for many years in .308, .30-06, and 7mm Mauser. They kill much better than pointed bullets, holding their course after striking animals. The longest shot I've taken at a game animal in Michigan, was a 10-point whitetail in a power line right-of-way at about 190 yards; so ballistic co-efficient means nothing to me. Maybe an antelope, out west, across a canyon would change my mind, or maybe I'd just hold a bit higher on him, and stay with the round nose. Hard to say. Might find out some day.

Very nice gun... I feel compelled to point out, however, that while sort of similar in overall length and rim diameter to the .308, the .257 Roberts is actually based on the 7X57 Mauser casing... The .260 Remington is the factory .257 caliber round built on the .308 casing (which itself originated as the 30-06). The .308 family includes: .243 Winchester, .260 Remington; 7mm-08 Remington; .308 Winchester; .338 Federal; and .358 Winchester as well as wildcats. The 7X57 family includes: 5.6x57 RWS; 6mm Remington; .257 Roberts; 6.5x57 Mauser; 7x57 Mauser; and 8x57 Mauser as well as wildcats. That said, I like my Ruger No 1 in .257 Roberts! I took woodchucks out to 350 yards or so with the factory Remington 117 RN loads before I started reloading for it... I have also found that it penetrates rice paper just fine! ;~)

John Grossbohlin not quite. The .260 Rem is a 6.5 (.264), not .257 like the Roberts. Of course, the 6.5s are really 6.71mm.

John Grossbohlin the 8x57 was introduced earlier, 1888. It was not a Mauser design. It was a German rifle commission design. It was Mauser who based his 7mm on the older 8mm (actually designated 7.9 or 7.92 by the Germans) so it should be called the 8mm family

That Round must really be something else? My Grand Father love, love LOVED his 25-06! Just before he passed in 96', he traded for 257 Roberts. Not sure what Manf. it was from? All I know...this was the FIRST Rifle I was asked about what Granny did with it! That and my Uncles "Pre 64 Model 70" in .243. It was a matching pair to his 30-06! Almond color and SUPER BEYOND Hair Triggered! That man LOVED to tinker with triggers.LOL When I say SUPER HAIR....I mean you better have reticle on target...BEFORE you even THINK of pulling the trigger LOL(ask me how I know LOL, and more than once, to my chagrin). Back to the 257 Roberts....He used to trade a lot with Ripley, WV's only reloading/ Gun Store and they closed shortly after he passed but one of "The Primer Pockets" long time employees recognized me at the Outdoors Shop that took its place. Pretty sweet, as it was only a hand full of times I was there with Grand Dad! He was known and respected...as I posted before, I do believe he had Hunting Permission from just about every land owner in the area! This question about the Rifle really got me! Made me wish I had the chance to see what it could do and if he thought it was better than his 25-06! He was known to trade a Rifle pretty quick, if it wasnt better than what he already had..so it must have been pretty good! This was in 2005(question) he passed in Aug. 96'. Long time, to still be curious! Thanks for the memory, once again! I needed it!

Beautiful rifle. I had 2 kimber montanas and 2 kimber hunters. I really liked the rifles but they were inconsistent. One time they would be shooting sub inch no problem, the next time, they could be shooting 2-3 inch groups. I never could work out what the problem was, they are all gone now. It is frustrating because at the same time I have a New ultra light arms 24B. While the kimber is like a shrunk model 70 Winchester, the 24B is like a shrunk Remington 700. The 24B is basically the same size and weight as the kimber 84, but the barrel is slightly heavier. What is frustrating is the 24B will shoot sub inch all day long. It is about the most consistent shooting rifle I have ever owned. I wish the kimbers would do that, I really liked them other than their inconsistent accuracy. The 257 Roberts is a great round also. My Dad had one, which I have now, and I also have a model 70 featherweight in 257 Roberts. Wonderful rifles, but in general seem to prefer lighter bullets in the 100-110 gr range. I have a friend who has hunted extensively with a 25-06, taking game up through elk, bear, and moose. Dozens of them. His preferred bullet was the 100 gr partition, because it was very fast, flat, and gave him the fine accuracy he desired. His 25-06 didn't like the heavier 120 gr bullets. I would like to try the 100 gr partition in my Roberts rifles. Dads always liked the 100 gr Winchester silvertip and now shoots the 110 accubond very well, as does the featherweight. The featherweight will shoot hornady superformance 117 gr SST good enough to hunt with but it is doing about 1.5 inches. 120's can be up to 3-4 inches. I have used the 110 accubond in the 25-06 and the 257 weatherby very satisfactorily and while it works in the Roberts also, I think it is better suited in the faster cartridges. So I would like to try the 100 gr partition, if I could find any these days.

I'd have liked to have used it for whitetail this year but due to a series of unfortunate events and fracturing my tibia, I didn't mess with it. I did, however, take my AR-15 instead and killed 2 deer with it. I do want to find is reload recipe for this Kimber and maybe try one similar to yours and see how it does. I hear people saying "its too nice to be taken to the woods". I wonder what people do to their rifles when hunting. Some people's rifles are so beat up I wonder if they don't use then like a machete! I have been fortunate enough to own some really pretty rifles. While they don't escape every little dent or scratch, I can manage to keep them mostly unmarred. I appreciate a fine looking rifle and try my best to avoid as much abuse as is possible. But everyone is different. I read that Theodore Roosevelt was partial to fancy rifles but wasn't afraid to take them hunting. Some of his rifles, in museums now, I guess show the wear and tear, or so I've read. But is that so terrible? Like some say, the dings and dents add character and memories of good times.

That bullet is tuned to expand properly down to .25-35 Winchester speeds. Probably really opens up big times at those higher speeds. Personally I would be concerned it might open too fast on elk. What did Hornady say it's optimum velocity range was? There are seriously much better bullets in .257 for an elk. I know Hornady's old 120 grain hollow point was designed to be tough enough for elk and a .25-06 . Heard that directly from a Hornady ballistic lab tech years ago.

The 308 was based on an altered 30-06 case. The 30-06 case was developed off the 7x57 Mauser case same one as the 257 Roberts. So he's not entirely incorrect. The Americans picked the mauser to the bone like everyone else and were sued by Mauser over it. If you put a 308 case back to back with a 7mm mauser you will see they are identical case heads. American armory just lengthened the case to make a 30-06 cartridge.

John Irwin I'm not sure I would call it nonsense. Will the Bob kill an elk? Absolutely. Is it an optimal elk cartridge? I would say it depends on what kind of elk the hunter is pursuing. Are we talking about a young spike or a cow, as seen here? Or are we going after a big mature herd bull? Shot placement and good bullet selection is paramount, but I firmly believe that some tools are better than others for specific tasks. With elk, I have discovered that I like the added insurance a larger, more powerful cartridge offers. And no, I'm not advocating for a super Magnum. My favorite elk cartridge is hands down the .30-06 SPRG. It can be shot accurately by most rifleman, and a good ol 165 grain Nosler Partition at 2800 fps muzzle velocity will ruin a big bull's day. The Bob will work fine, but only as long as good bullets are used, such as the 115 grain Nosler Partitions. Even then, I probably wouldn't take the Bob on a hunt for a big bull. I wouldn't hesitate taking the .257 Bee though 😁💪 Happy hunting

John Irwin I've used it once. And it reminds me ALOT of a 243. A very versatile round. It could definitely take out deer up to 350 400 yards no problem. Not sure on elk though. Maybe 150 yards?
@TakeDeadAim
5 жыл бұрын
Yep. I grew up in Wyoming hunting Elk/mule deer/pronghorn and although it certainly WILL kill an elk(as will a .243 which I've used to shoot mulies)...it's most definitely NOT an "Elk caliber" for most hunters. I've seen many wounded elk run a LONG way when hit with very small caliber bullets. Hit correctly, it'll drop right there but with elk you often depend on severe wounding to at least slow it down if having to take a less than optimal shot. There's no argument, no debate. I've seen a friend on the last day of a hunt take a shot he really shouldn't have but luckily his .30cal 180gr Partition was able to break the bulls shoulder and make it much easier for a follow up shot. Had it been a lightweight/small frontal area bullet...there's almost zero chance the same damage would have been done and that elk would have disappeared over the ridge. I know and grew up with several professional guides and a couple of them won't even take your money if you show up with anything less than a .270 shooting 150gr bullets. THAT is what is widely considered a "minimum". They don't do it to make you feel bad...they do it because they KNOW what to expect out in the real world of possibly shooting through heavy bone. The .257 is more suited to be a very good deer round unless you're CERTAIN that you won't take a shot under 200yds. All that said...I OWN a .257 which I built from a Japanese Arisaka. I've shot a couple of whitetail deer with it but that's it's limit for ME.

Can you pound a nail in with a 20mm wrench? Absolutely, but not an appropriate tool for the task. Same goes as a statement as follows, can you pound a roofing nail in with a sledge hammer? You bet, not the appropriate tool for the task. Can you kill deer with a 22lr I’m sure some foolish enough have, not ethical or appropriate. 257 is just a c$&@ hair over a 243 and smaller than a 6.5. In a good amount of states .277 cal (which excludes 6.5 calibers) is the smallest bore dia to hunt elk, so with that said I second yes it’s possible but not appropriate.

I just ordered some of those for my 257 Roberts, his name is BOB. What’s your C.O.A.L on this load if you don’t mind sharing.

@@cavedweller1959 Thanks CaveDweller, mine will be in Wednesday and I’m getting ready for a trip to Pennsylvania to with a Buddy of mine that lives up there. If you ever need a Hunting buddy on an elk trip I’d love to kill a Cow elk for the freezer, let me know. I’ve never hunted Elk or out West for that. It’s a dream of mine for sure.

Remington uses a short action for their 257 Roberts editions while Winchester uses a standard length. The 257 Roberts will work in a short action unless you reload and then the long actions allow you more options. I'm surprised that Kimber used the short action instead of a standard length like Winchester since their rifles are basically copies of the Model 70. I've got a few M70's and one of them is a Featherweight in 257 Roberts, a real tact-driver.

Kimber does the 25-06 in the long action, if they also did the .257, probably wouldn't move to many.

Elk and anything less than 30 cal doesn't compute. Sorry 7mm mag fans.

Even though you may be able to make lethal shot using that rifle, it is extremely irresponsible to do so on large game like elk. At 200yds, 117gr bullet and a max. 3000fps velocity you only get 1334 lb./ft of energy. Not nearly enough. Please reconsider another cartridge for elk!

Only irresponsible when used by irresponsible people, maybe the type that needs a 7mm RUM or 338 Win Mag to take a 450 yard {or more} shot at a quartering away bull. Payed 8 grand for a trophy hunt, wouldn't want to come home empty handed. 117 grain of proper bullet at 3000 fps, out to 250 or so yards, side ways through the ribs spells meat in the freezer.

Dude, calm down, cut back on the caffeine. The flipping your rifle in front of the camera made me dizzy. Nice rifle though, thanks for the video.
