New subscriber here and homeschooling mom to four girls! I love that you are working at your child’s pace and have her starting new curriculum in December! I have debated this so much with my soon to be Kindergartener! She doesn’t seem quite ready for K but I also didn’t feel like she needed a whole other year of Pre-K either! We may be doing the same!

It’s hard sometimes to figure out where to be/ how fast to go 😆 But yes, going at each child’s pace has worked perfectly for us.

I switched all my children from MasterBooks language arts to the new editions of TGTB. We have used TGTB for 3 weeks now. I personally think both programs are good but both have their strengths and weaknesses. A child’s learning style and mom’s teaching style has a lot to do with which is preferred. We need a stronger reading instruction. The new edition of TGTB has independent practice every day which includes the practice you we referencing. MB has the worksheets but I feel is lacking in “scripting” for the parent. When I’m tired or distracted with other children, it is nice to have it all written out for me in TGTB. We will continue using a mix of both as well.

I agree, some years we need more of one focus and then the next another focus. Switching between great curriculum is so helpful ❤️

I am using TGTB for my K and 1 this year too. I toss in some explode the code and spelling U See to round out lessons.

I am in the same boat with my oldest! I started with The Good and the Beautiful with him and like you said I just felt like he needed more help. I did All About Reading Pre reading with him but this will technically be 1st grade for him but I worry about him being behind. Thank you so much for sharing I feel like I see people always share about their children being ahead and I worry I’m not doing a good job

I’m always worried I’m not doing enough 😆 It seems like that is part of being a homeschool mama.

I did TGTB Primer K with my son (to prep for starting Kinder this year), but when we finished I knew he wouldn’t be ready for Level K. So, we did Masterbooks Foundation Phonics...It felt like such a good transition into TGTB level K! I’ll have one in Level K and one in Level 2 this year. It will be our first year using K, but there it is a newer edition and seems to have the lessons broken up more. We’re also trying out Five In A Row for the first time this year!

I would suggest watching her and researching what her learning style is. My daughter struggled with a desk situation and the paper/pencil method. She did not excel in workbooks. When I changed things up to verbal and kinesthetic teaching and learning, she thrived. Bloom as well as Howard Gardner have great research on the different learning styles. You and she just keep loosely experimenting with her learning. She will get it.

Very true, knowing each kid’s style has been so key to how I proceed for them the next year. ❤️
