I’m an avid reader, and I just made the switch to e-readers (I like the Kobo Libra 2 better than any Kindle model, but to each their own). I was very skeptical about them, as I love the feel of physical books, but it’s become difficult finding time to read over the last few years. After 2 weeks with an e-reader, I couldn’t be happier! The amount I read every day has skyrocketed. I didn’t miss the feel of a book in my hand as much as I thought I would, at all. In fact, I actively look forward to picking up my Kobo. The point is that you can fit a staggering collection of books on a small device, which, if you're strapped for space or not wanting a lot of things in your home, it's a fantastic thing to have. I have a hybrid library, but I'm much more selective about which books I buy to display on my shelf than the books I download for my digital library. Also, having an e-reader is great if you want to preserve the condition of your books. I read my physical books at home, but when I travel or am on my lunch break, I break out my e-reader because it's smaller, lighter, and more durable to take with me than a book. I wish Amazon would bring back some of the features that was on that keyboard. I can work my book as a new book so I would know which ones were new. There was more integration with the Audible and the books know it it’s like they don’t even like each other. (2:40) It appears to be a cost-cutting measure. The mainboard takes up the bottom half behind the display, so putting the power button on the bottom keeps it on the mainboard without running a long ribbon cable up to the top. I prefer how Boox managed to put their (Poke series) power button at the top! _(EDIT 5 months after posting: Running a long ribbon cable to the top was what Amazon actually did with the power button on the Kindle Voyage!)_ (6:30) Michael, I can understand why you don't really want to get one! It reminds me of how, as someone with autism, I can't use regular Kindle/Kobo e-readers as my primary e-readers, and tend to prefer Boox e-readers instead for a feature ditched on Kindle e-readers back in 2013: active content, or applications.

I finally broke down this summer and got a Kindle Oasis after doing some research into all e-readers. I can't say enough good things about it. After using it for 4 months I can also say that I agree with everything in your review, even if I take exception with your preference to reading on phones and tablets. Sore eyes and piling up battery charging cycles on a $1000+ device just to read doesn't feel right to me. E-ink makes it so easy on the eyes and the lack of other internals makes it easier on the hands (weight savings). This is especially true given that the first book I bought was one I hadn't read since school, The Fountainhead...a tome that were it in its physical form, would have doubled as a nightly forearm workout. Since then, I've gone through 5 of the 7 Foundation books from Asimov in preparation to be underwhelmed by Apple TVs rendition (oiy). I have many physical books, but I don't think I'm ever going back to reading on those anymore than on ipad/phones. I am keeping them around though, for when the zombie apocalypse knocks out the power.

Yeah. I have several reasons for why I’m getting one. I have an iPad Pro, and it’s just heavy (with a case) making it super difficult to read on. Plus, even at the lowest brightness it can be rough feeling on my eyes. The Kindle just looks much nicer. I get distracted with notifications on my iPad, and the games on it. Not to mention, it dies faster than the Kindle, so having the option to use the Kindle in place of my iPad for reading allows me to persevere the battery life on my iPad. I take public transit, I’ll have to take 1 hour there and 1 hour back. I’d rather have a cheaper Kindle out on the bus than an expensive iPad in case I drop it or robbery. All that being said, my iPad is still useful. I mostly draw, take class notes, game, and watch stuff on there. It’s so good for doing class work in bed when I can’t be bothered bc I’m lazy, lol. So yeah, weight, battery life, less-likely to get robbed for, and more distraction-free. The Kindle is great for that.

Been doing that since 2018 (or 2019?). Initially, the USB-C ports (not so much the cables) were a problem for me due to some of them being limited by excluding either data, charging, and/or video. Since 2020, USB-C ports have been pretty solid and super convenient, especially if you have a modern USB-C equipped laptop and a USB-C desktop monitor to connect it to. Bluetooth 5.x lightens the necessity of the port when it comes to some accessories. All that's left is USB Type-C 2.1 for 240W charging + Thunderbolt 5 for 80Gbps data transfer speeds to make eGPU viable. Hopefully USB4.1 (or whatever it'll be called) will be home to both.

At night, with minimum brightness and nightshift it looks like the text is sharply etched into the darkness of the room, the Kindle you get this greyish/orangish cheap looking low contrast light that smears the text a bit. In direct sunlight on a long trip recently, the kindle is marginally better as you do need to crank the brightness on the iPad up to near max for it to look good, but it was still usable down to even 50% brightness. Other than battery life, which is less of an issue for me as I don't read for longer than 2-3 hours at a time, the iPad is a much nicer reading experience for me.

This is the best review of this device. Like always expected from Mr. Mobile. It addresses all perspectives of using the device. Also the ability to change colour temperature is very helpful if you have warm and cool non smart lights in your house. Can you tell me how much brighter the display is compared to previous gen when backlight is switched off?

The lack of e-ink is a dealbreaker for me. Black and white isn’t an issue when reading regular books, but I’d prefer being able to see colour when reading comics and manga

I need eReaders in my life. I'm currently using a Kobo Libra. I use their integration with my city's library system (saved me tons of money) and it has awesome ergonomics. I actually like it more than books in many cases because I can easily one hand them while eating/snacking.

How well does this cope with a really big Kindle library? I upgraded to a Paperwhite a couple of years ago (so ~2018 model), but recently gave it away to my sister-in-law because it just couldn't cope with my library (which has several thousand titles, including a few hundred graphic novels.) To say it chugged would be an enormous understatement; resetting it to factory defaults (when I gave it away) took several minutes, because the touch screen was either not registering input or registering it in the wrong place. These problems went away after the wipe. I've been very reluctant to get a new Kindle as a result. For now I'm back to my default option (a high-end Samsung tablet).

Kindles are so great! But to be honest, I would still prefer other brands or a tablet considering how versatile those are, like taking note and access to other application. Otherwise, this is enough.

It's really surprising to me that some people feel comfortable reading long texts or even comics in a cell phone or tablet.

I think standard tablets and phones are the way forward. They are flexible and allow for any number of different readers. Like, I use Kavita for reading comics, mangas and my epub books. The readers built in and it keeps track of my progress across multiple devices, all I need is a browser. Kindles are too locked in and don't let you have solutions like that.

When it comes to charging cable I'd try leaving yours at home and taking on the challenge of finding a USB-C cable to borrow when you are out. I'm in the UK so there may be some differences but while you have a good chance of finding that the bar has a micro-usb cable for you to borrow, a USB-C cable is like finding Narnia at the back of your wardrobe. USB-C simply isn't commonplace enough yet for most places to have a spare lying in a draw. It's oddly easier to find places with wireless charging pads than it is a wild USB-C cable. So I can see why people dismiss this as a TechTuber thing as most people aren't carrying their charging equipment with them. Even when they go away that charging kit stays at the hotel room.

@Tony You're misunderstanding the post. The point was not that people don't have USB-C phones but that they don't carry the charging cables with them when out and about. They don't leave one at work either. So if someone finds themselves running low because of too much Call of Duty Mobile the chances of finding someone who has a USB-C cable you can borrow is really quite slim.

3:20 I'm kinda surprised by this but one of the things I've noticed as everything has shifted to USB-C is now I never know whether I'm packing enough cords for a trip. Like 5 years ago I just grabbed all my gadgets and their associated chargers, now it's like "Okay...can I get away with bringing two USB-C cords for five USB-C devices?"

One thing I should mention, charging your kindle much less ( 2-3 times a month) which means the ereader battery will degrade much slower than your tablet or phone battery you charge everyday.

I own the Oasis, so it’s not likely I’ll get this one, but USB C and Qi are huge to me, especially Qi. I have a Qi charger on my nightstand and laying the tablet down on the charger is the most natural way to charge. It’s something you can do in the dark without fumbling for a cord, especially in the dark.

Nearly every Kindle, with the exception of the Oasis model, has been out of stock on Amazon India since March 2024. Strangely, there's been no news coverage or announcements regarding this situation. is it possible that Kindles are being phased out of the Indian market? Could you please investigate further and provide any relevant updates or news on this matter?

I didn't realize kindles were still around. I still have my 2011 Kindle with built in 3G and it served me well, even when living abroad, but I don't use it anymore. I have a Fire Tablet which is very useful for school and I mostly read books on my phone (using the blue light filter) through my library's libby app.

Yesterday I went to an Amazon four-star store and looked at the two devices, and I must say that the new paper white signature edition felt very cheaply made. It's essentially all plastic! I know it's a matter of opinion but, I don't see what the excitement is about this device. When I held the oasis (metal back, with a glass front), it definitely had a premium build feeling, as it should. The oasis definitely allows for better hand positioning. Again after looking at both of them in the store, I would say for those who have an iPad, or any sort of other tablet they just use that! I have a secondary phone which is a Z-fold 2, and I will just use that as my E reader. The experience is great! It's in color, when the phone is fully open the screen size is 7.6 inches. granted the device is a little heavier, but, I felt as though I was getting a more authentic experience with the Z Fold 2 the the Kindle device? Until the devices are made very similar to the oasis I can't see spending 150 or $160 for a plastic device. Again thank you so much for your review, as it pushed me to go and see these devices firsthand.

The screen is glass but yes the rest is plastic but very nicely feeling plastic. For a plastic device it’s definitely top quality in my mind-or at least my 6-year-old PW is. And that one doesn’t have a glass screen!

I have sensitive eyes and I always stuck to physical books cause it was too hard to read on my phone (even when I adjusted all the settings). I always thought a kindle would be the same but I wanted to try it (really wanted ebooks from my library lol). I was so surprised. It is (for me) way easier on my eyes. When my eyes hurt and I can't look at my phone for long, I can still look at the eReader.

I just sit back to the new iPad mini after using a Kindle paperwhite for more than a year. In the end the slow speed of the scrolling, the black and white screen, the lack of options with regards to the layout of the books etc just became too much. I also very much enjoy making notes while reading using the notes app on the iPad mini and seriously missed that function. Another thing that I missed was having instant access to Safari if I wanted to read the back story of something I'm reading...

It's easier to hold a kindle over your face for an hour while lying down than it is a phone, especially when you're getting sleepy lol. It's pretty cool, but the responsiveness & lack of colour (on the old one anyway) leaves me wanting more. It's also hard just to reliably highlight a word a lot of the time

Only thing is, trying to read a book on a phone or tablet in the sun is almost impossible. I have the original Paperwhite and love it, plus no smudges like this signature edition has, according to the video, and it also has a backlight for night reading. Little tip for anyone with a Paperwhite, stick a pop socket or two on the back of it and it is WAY easier to deal with, no hitting the power button stupidly placed on the bottom..

I kept staring at that weird little notch under the top bezel, expecting it to be a speaker for audiobooks, but looking it up I found it's an ambient light sensor for automatic backlight adjustment!
