This is an incredible build. The F-104 was a great choice. It is one of my all time favorite fighters. Your weathering techniques is outstanding, and what I appreciate is how you use other colors than black to highlight the panels, so many overuse and misunderstand that. Hi everyone! For the model stand I'm using please visit www.theinnernerd.com :) Hope you enjoyed the video and thank you for watching. As I said in the video, all references are linked in the description along with my *Patreon Page Link* if you want to support the channel and help me deliver videos like this on a more regular basis. Great kit from Kinetic but I wasn’t feeling the kit’s offering of decal options so went ahead and bought some aftermarket ones which were great. I used the really thorough walk around as my base build and then several others to get an idea for the weathering. Up next is going to be one of my favourite aircraft - the Phantom!! So keep a lookout for that. Remember to subscribe and hit the bell icon so you get notified when I make an upload. As always please be tactful in the comments. Constructive criticism is fine but all rude, aggressive and outrightly negative comments will be removed. I make for fun, not for competition, and there is no room for hate on my channel as there is enough in the world elsewhere. Thanks again and happy modelling, The Inner Nerd

The Inner Nerd Scale Modelling I really love that you feel the same as I do about the black panel liner stuff. I look at the beautiful builds and then people do the black. I just gape and keep wondering why people would do that to their work. Some even use that on minis... If you do a new Starfighter, then do it in the NASA colors or replicate the one that shot itself down. :)

The F-104 designers were like “Wings? Lol don’t be silly.”
@TLTeo
4 жыл бұрын
The size of the wings is actually deceptive because it's so light. The 104 had comparable wing loading to, e.g., the Harrier, F105 and Jaguar, and less than the Tornado, F111, Su-24 or Mig-27 to name a few.
@DavidSmith-ss1cg

I have actually wondered if this type of design(like the Messerschmitt Bf-109, it is mostly a monstrous engine with wings and tail, and the space for a pilot) somehow appeals to German pilots. This plane, like many of the US "Century Series" of jets in the late 1050s and early 1960s, is just so damned good looking. They have a reputation as dangerous to the pilots, too, and the F-104 was no exception. Fantastic job on the build, and extra thanks for explaining how you go about selecting the colors and applications to get the fine weathering effects. The tip about spraying through masks is one I'll have to try, too. Keep up the great work; we'll be watching!

Outstanding job! Great techniques, and; some great ideas. Particularly, the home made mottling mask. I did something similar many years ago using a piece of a worn out fly swatter. A good build and I like your videos. You've got the balance right between building and commentary. I must say I get bored when people talk for ages with no action, I think we need to see what is going on rather than listen to loads waffle. I agree with others on panel lining and washes. I hate it when some people cover the model with thick dark washes. It over emphasises panel lines and makes the model look too dark and like the model is dirty, and I don't mean authentic dirty.

And let's be honest who doesn't like a Starfighter build !! - great to see a BAF one too, very rare to see one in this scheme; as far as suggestions for any future F-104's, a few years back, Hasegawa released theirs with RoCAF / Taiwan decals, which Xtradecal now do have a look, see what you think.. imgproc.airliners.net/photos/airliners/6/9/9/0949996.jpg?v=v40 www.hannants.co.uk/product/X48210?result-token=gytnE Well done matey, keep the vid's coming. If you like a good story about corruption, backhanders and skulduggery. the story of how the Luftwaffe came to buy the Starfighter is a good yarn. Essentially they never should have purchased it as there were lots of cheaper and far more useful aircraft on the market at the time. The Starfighter is crash prone and 'difficult' in foul weather and the weapons load isn't much to boast about either. But never mind, it looks super cool.

I just watched this video and I'm very impressed!! Excellent job!! I have the Kinetic F-104G Luftwaffe Starfighter kit, number K48083 that I'm presently working on. I will never be able to build a kit of the quality of yours but I like trying. I would love to see a full build video sometime of this kit done in the Naval Air Wing version. I'm a little confused about the colors to paint it with and also about using the photo etch seat belts. The instructions call for the bottom surfaces of the jet to be painted chrome for plastic ALC107. From all the photos I've been able to find on this version, nothing looks chrome to me. Possibly flat aluminum or something like that, but not chrome. Do you possibly have any recommendations?? And PE and me just don't get along ordinarily, so I'm kind of perplexed about the seat straps...
@TheInnerNerd
Жыл бұрын
Thank you. Your question about the chrome/aluminium - I think it's more of a flat aluminium looking at the references I found when doing this build. High chrome isn't really used anywhere other than hydraulics in my experience. Also for the PE. It can be useful to burnish the PE plate with a naked flame, only a second or two across the sheet. This will make the PE less springy and easier/more consistent to bend. DON'T do this if the PE is pre coloured though or it will wrinkle the coating. Hope this helps, good luck and thanks for watching :)

After me, many airbrushes are not fit for airbrushing because of the rough surface after airbrushing. One produces very good results: NEO for Iwata CN. It is far better than a Iwata HPCP, HS Infinity CR plus, Tamiya HG 0,35.
@TheInnerNerd
3 жыл бұрын
The rough surface is typically not down to the airbrush, but the consistency of the paint. I get the same results out of my £40 Sealey starter airbrush as I do my H&S. I use the H&S purely because it's easier to clean and a little more precise in the hand. If you're getting rough paint your air pressure may be too high, distance from the model too large or the paint is too thick. Paint brands can also affect this, Humbrol and pure acrylics spray horribly for me so I stick to acrylic lacquers and they come out silky smooth. I hope this helps and thanks for watching :)

Elegant work! A good balance of weathering and wear, without looking ready to be put paid. If you would like a real challenge, build a flight of four or so wheels-up, in an in-flight forced perspective diorama, a pilot in the driver's seat of each. One would be in 1:32nd scale, the second in 1:48th, the third in 1:72nd, and the last in 1:144th scale. (I might have seen one in 1:100th scale, and another in in 1:200th scale, but I cannot be certain.) They obviously would be of the same air force, of the same squadron, in identical paint scheme (well, natural metal), identical markings, except for the individual aircraft identification.

The F-104 out-fought everything from that time period. Computer simulations have shown that the faster jet did much better during the age of guns, since it could control the pace of the fight, leaving and re-entering battle as desired. I have like 10 F-104 books, but they all seem to have the same pictures. Art books have provided me a much-needed escape from real life. When life was difficult I'd set up my easy chair with coffee, a desk lamp and a stack of art books beside me. They kept me going during the hardest times. My art books are the best investments I ever made. My 3 favorite books are: - Wonderworks by Michael Whelan - Beyond the Horizon by John Harris - Great Fighter Jets of the Galaxy 1 by Tim Gibson

Something I noticed on the build, you got the wrong Ejection Seat for a Belgium F-104G. The Ejection Seat you have installed was a "Martin-Baker" that was used on German F-104G's, the Belgium Ejection Seats were like the "early" Ejection Seats like that of the F-104A/C of the United States. GOOD Video and "Thanks" for sharing this with us, learn some NEW Detailing tips.

Yes I did some reading around this before I started and mis-read that the G's also had MB seats (but only in the German ones) so I went ahead and used that incorrectly as it turned out. The kit doesn't come with a C2 so that would have to be an aftermarket one if you buy this exact kit. I believe the JSDAF version of the kit does come with a C2

Just a question - kinda new to building again. Since most things get coated with clears and then matt varnish, etc is there any need to use gloss paints in general? I realize maybe for a finish detail or something like that but otherwise? Flats seem to to be a little easier to spray as well. Your thoughts would be appreciated. I use mostly tamiya and model master acrylics as they are the most available to me. I do use some lacquers such as metals, clear coats.

Hello and welcome back. So the gloss coats help with stopping the decals from silvering the carrier film around the printed area. You can apply decals over a matte coat but will need stronf decal solutions and the risk is higher than that of a good glossy coat. I've found that using Superclear III thinned down to around 50% sprayed in 3 layers, like the process in the video, results in a glossy enough surface to eliminate all silvering. X-22 will do the same if you're on Tamiya. You can then seal the decals in with matte but again run the risk of silvering. Another 3 layers of gloss will build up the surface which you can do weathering on. Some people like a gloss coat to oil wash onto since this is the easiest to remove. The more matte the harder it will become to remove the oils. The build of layers after the decals have been sealed in is decided by what weathering and effects you want to replicate so can be up to you. If you'd like to see more about this kind of subject in more detail I have a Patreon page where I explain using a more focused video than is available on KZitem. Just search Patreon/TheInnerNerd

Great build!! You really inspire me to build better model! Wondering how long do you wait between sections when weathering with oil washes???
@TheInnerNerd
2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I leave the washes to go touch dry before removing, then move straight onto the next effect/oil so no waiting time in the weathering process really. I wait 24 hours before applying any varnishes though, oils dry slowly, even at that dilution. Hope that helps and thanks for watching :)

How does XF-86 perform as a flat clear? do you have to thin it in any way? or can you spray it out of the pot? I recently picked some up cause my only other options are spray cans, and I want to make sure I know how to use it correctly
@TheInnerNerd

I like this one but I don't normally use it for the final coat since I find VMS varnishes the best. The Tamiya will need thinning, preferably with their X-20A acrylic thinner. I have a video which shows how I thin paint best for airbrushing here kzitem.info/news/bejne/uGmwqqGAsKKBlo4 If you're limited to the Tamiya XF-86 though it will do the job you want it to. My recommendation is to spray it thinnly and build the coats after letting the last one dry. Matte varnish can cloud if sprayed too thick or built too fast so the slower the better. Hope this helps and thanks for watching :)
