In the mid-eighteenth century David Hartley was an ironworker in Birmingham. He learned the skill of clipping and forging coins. leaving the busy Birmingham, he headed to the remote hills of Cragg Vale to Bell House Farm. From here, he recruited others to his cause and an entire counterfeiting gang was in action and David was known as their King. Hidden and safe from the authority and the law ....so they thought.
In 1767 an investigation into counterfeit coins discovered a gang was operating in the gills above Mytholmroyd. Into the scene comes tax and excise man William Deighton from Halifax.
What followed over the next few months was a whirlwind of treachery, backstabbing, violence and murder as the Coiners clashed with each other and the law till a number of them were hung from the Gallows Pole in York or above the Town of Halifax.
A story forgotten for nearly 200 years. The last few decades have seen a resurgence in the story, its characters and locations. The Gallows Pole BBC adaptation hits screens next week. Here's your chance to discover the story and some of the real locations.
