they should have casted someone who was actually not good looking then. the german princess was so good looking as the beauty standards today.

Well it's actually a debate that she actually was good looking it just that the documented first meeting went so poorly. She didn't recognize Henry and told him he was smelly and humiliated him publicly. Her personality also was a huge turnoff for Henry. So while she is attractive Henry forgot that attraction also needs the right personality traits and none of those traits were in Anne of Cleves.

Jane Seymour sold her jewellery for Elizabeth not Mary and Henry only became a loving father to Mary after she had signed away her birthright.

Thinking back, I'm surprised he didn't execute the painter that painted Anne of Cleves portrait. He was not happy when he saw her.

Henry NEVER would have executed Hans Holbein. Holbein was responsible for making His Majesty look good, that was his primary purpose as Henry's court portraitist. It would be like one of us having Patrick Demarchelier following us around with a camera, lighting crew, and hair and makeup artists and then we get annoyed when he also takes a good picture of someone else. It's literally his JOB 😂 Henry had a deep rooted self-interest in keeping Holbein alive.

I've wondered this too! Or that he didn't execute his sister and his friend for going behind his back and marrying each other. That he was choosy some of the time.

I have seen some historians speculate that the painting was actually accurate 😉 there are other paintings of Anne from other artists that look the same. I personally just think it was a “sour grapes” situation, Anne didn’t know how to play along with the “courting” bs Henry did like the English women had, and she rejected him on their first meeting (saying that he smelled). Henry’s ego couldn’t stand that so he had to say she was ugly and he didn’t want her anyway 🤣🙌🏻

@@OpalLeigh That seems to be the general consensus. The portrait was accurate but Henry had to save face after Anne's initial rejection of his over the top approach.

It had nothing to do with her looks. That was just an excuse. The problem was that she slapped his face when he started groping her at a masked ball. She hadn't recognized him and just figured some fat old guy couldn;t keep his hands to himself.

The story of Henry referring to Anne of Cleves as "the Flanders mare" is widely disputed and largely considered a complete piece of fiction by most historians. There are no contemporary accounts of him ever having said anything like this. Although he annulled their marriage on the grounds of inability to consummate it stating that Anne was too unattractive to have sex with, it's far more likely that Henry was just unable to perform at that time. He was already morbidly obese, was six years past his catastrophic jousting accident, and he had a purulent bleeding ulcer on his leg causing tremendous pain. But Henry VIII, or any king for that matter, could never admit that the lack of sex in their marriage was due to his own shortcomings. So he blamed Anne instead. He was a raging lunatic by the time 1539 rolled around.

I'm sure I read that although neither of them fancied each other they actually did get on as friends, and becasue she backed off and acepted an annulment/divorce, she actually was named the 'kings sister' as a title and was always welcomed to court. They were great friends and she was very attentive to his daughters. but i could be wrong.

Jane Seymor was Henry's most loved wife. She died of an infection probably given to her by the doctors who assisted the child's birth. He never got over her death and none of his other wives were good enough, in his eyes , compared to Jane.

In a way she was, yes, but Jane Seymor became something of a martyr to Henry. They were together about a year and a half and then she died, giving him what he desired most of all - a son. Of course no one else could live up that ideal.

He had an injury that took him from being an active guy to always in pain with a leg injury that would never heal They think that contributed to his gumpier nature later on. But even Thomas Moore who knew him well said that if his head would secure the king a castle it wouldn't fail to go so he was never the nicest person even to his friends. Kings were allowed to get away with a lot of bad behavior.

To put things in context is wasn't believed in most countries a woman could rule or men would accept it. Queen Maud had tried and failed to rule england. It had never successfully been done. Prior to Henry and his father the country has been through several decades of back and forth civil war over the crown. So while Henry was a terrible person in his mind and many minds he was only trying to do the responsible thing and leave his country with a stable heir. The fear of unrest and a total breakdown over who would rule was a real fear. So while his will and love for Ann Bolyen was a real motivator she read the room and played her cards and lost but if it hadn't been her it would have been someone else I think. She just had the inititive. Ironically I think women have been the longest reigning monarchs in Brittain.

How do you make these video/clips. Is there a website or something. Do you download the episode then cut out the clips you want to post? I want to do the same for this film and many other but dont know how.🩷🩷
