Herbert Howells, newly arranged by organist Jonathan Clinch, and published for the 2023 Coronation. King’s Herald was originally conceived as the opening of the three-movement 'Pageantry' (1934), written for the Belle Vue National Brass Band Contest in Manchester. #Howells had been blown away by ‘the sheer brilliance of the bandsmen’s technical skill’ and provided a short score that was then arranged by an expert bandsman (probably the renowned Frank Wright). It became immediately popular and when Howells was asked to provide an orchestral piece for the 1937 #Coronation of George VI, he returned to the short score, this time scoring it himself for full orchestra (with #organ). Even when writing out neat copies, Howells very rarely left anything unchanged, and when he returned to King’s Herald, he made extensive changes to the original band work, further enriching the harmony and its rhythmic vitality. Its ternary form is made up an extended fanfare which leads into a march and later returns to the fanfare material. Having played several popular Coronation arrangements of Walton and Elgar, it seemed fitting to consider Howells’ ceremonial music too, particularly when there are extensive opportunities for the use of solo reeds. This transcription was made for Westminster Abbey in 2016 and was premiered by the then Sub-Organist, Daniel Cook. The score is shortly to be published by Novello (Wise Music).
