another Great Video uploaded, Matts. Hats Off to the dudes out there giving away what many would consider secrets, by sharing info, so others have success and aren’t wasting time & resources. that’s what makes them one hell of a community…like-minded folks that wanna see others thrive, while enjoying the great outdoors. most folks around my parts (ATL area) do not want anyone to know where they’ve caught wall-hangin’-sized largemouth bass. I suppose it’s different, when your fishery isn’t finite in boundary & species population(s) can change on the daily, but hearing the advice & support shared by those wise in experience is very cool to me. I’d graciously trade a San Fran Bay fishing experience for a Georgia River Redeye Bass, Shoal Bass trip with Matts. I know a specific spot on the Flint River (in GA), where a Red-eyed Bass subspecies can only be found at. physical barriers have retained & aided them to thrive, with no overcrowding, nor high fishing pressure.

Nice boat! I have a 1990 Arima Sea Ranger. It’s been all over the country with me. We are now living in Georgia and I have not seen an Arima here for the last 8 years. I fish rivers and lakes here. But I’ve spent lots of time on the ocean in California and on the Great Lakes. Best boats there are for their size. Absolutely love my old girl. Keep making the great videos. Oh, bleed the fish you plan to keep to eat.

I'm a huge fan of spoons for kings. Most of the time I start with a cut plug herring on the downrigger with no flasher in the morning, in the afternoon I switch up to flasher spoon combo and has worked well for me for 20+ years of king fishing

Just thought of an excellent idea for a video you could do for all of us viewers. Over the years of watching your videos, I have learned a couple knots, but I still haven't got down a lot of them, however I now know what they are when I see them. Maybe put together a video of different knots with brief description of when to use them? Im sure can't be the only one 😆

Hey Matt, just a suggestion since you're only running 1 down-rigger move it to the port side of boat. 1st it makes it easier to watch rods from the helm. 2nd fight and net fish on starboard side, down-rigger won't be in the way and you'll be close to the wheel for controlling the boat. You'll be able to leave down-rigger and line in water and possibly double up. Also cover or remove anything on gunwale of boat that the net can get hung up on. Noticed you struggle on a few vids with this when netting fish. Good Luck!

Yes Matts, lake/river boaters who cross riffles and things will tell you to speed up when going over rough water to stay above the waves and skip over the tops. It doesn't work in the ocean.

Good stuff! I noticed you don't like to use the downrigger hook for you downrigger ball? Its quicker than pulling the ball into the boat every fish and also allows you to swivel your downrigger forward to help have more unobstructed space when trying to land your fish. Good luck!

I’ve fished lakeside my entire life and at this point I don’t think I’ll ever change… like I’ve had chances to go deep sea fishing but there is something about being pulled/knocked off a boat and then dragged down that makes me nervous… like you’re about hundreds of feet of just empty space and that just feels weird.

never knew about the barbless thing when going for rock or hali when you have salmon on board, but good to know! They are checking around HMB, I got checked they pulled my line and looked at the hooks (I had pinched them) I suppose when Salmon are biting you could catch one on a shrimp fly or other rockfish rig, and when its undersized they wont get messed up in that case.

Can i offer you a netting tip? Forget trying to net the fish at the side of the boat. Net it straight off the back. Have the "net man" lay on the motor with his chest and net straight behind the motor. The fish will be right at the back of the boat and you won't have to release the second rod from the rigger, and might get a double header. Trust me, it works like a charm. Another tip is to put a clip on the handle of the net with a zip tie and clip the mesh of the net in it. When the fish enters the basket, the clip is released and bingo, no more tangled nets.

Meat coloration depends on the diet of the fish too. I know Tully Chinook have paler meat compared to regular Chinook meat. Due to the fact Tully Chinook can't really pass karetonids easily in their flesh. It's what I heard from some old man where I fish.

I didn't read all the comments, but wanted to clarify, so no one gets a ticket. This happens quite often on youtube videos. People have salmon on board, and they start rockfishing. They almost 100% mention the barbless hooks but forget to mention if you use bait you have to use a barbless circle hook(s). I copied the Regs for clarification. (2) Barbless Hooks. No more than two (2) single point, single shank barbless hooks shall be used in the ocean north of Point Conception (34° 27’00” N. lat.) when salmon fishing or fishing from any boat or floating device with salmon on board. (3) Other Hook Restrictions. When fishing with bait in the ocean between 40°10’00” N. lat. (near Cape Mendocino) and Point Conception, if angling by any means other than trolling, then no more than two (2) single point, single shank, barbless circle hooks shall be used. The distance between the two hooks must not exceed five inches when measured from the top of the eye of the top hook to the inner base of the curve of the lower hook, and both hooks must be permanently tied in place (hard tied). A circle hook is defined as a hook with a generally circular shape, and a point which turns inwards, pointing directly to the shank at a 90-degree angle. Trolling is defined as angling from a boat or floating device that is making way by means of a source of power, other than drifting by means of the prevailing water current or weather conditions. See Section 28.65(g)

The reason they want you to pinch down barbs when you have salmon on board is to make sure you never use a barbed hook to get salmon. It’s basically to stop the few people who would otherwise use it as a loophole to fish salmon with barbs.
