Even the placement of the family at the table is a visual sign of things to come. To Viserys' right (so his masked side) sit the Greens and to his left sit the Blacks. Like delegations from feuding nations, they keep to their own side of the table, each group choosing to remain in the company of their own. Meanwhile Viserys sits in the centre, the last thing bridging these ever more distant sides of the family. No one sits directly opposite him, further reinforcing that everyone else at that table has picked a side, one way or another.

This scene and the one from the throne room were such heart wrenching moments which made this one season (in my opinion) far superior to the many seasons of the original Game of Thrones series. Paddy Considine performance was flawless & actually made me feel something in these scenes. The sorry of an old man who loves his family, but can see the conflict to come which is only kept in check with his presence and authority. Too bad Otto's lust for power & Rhaenerya's blatant infidelity and refusal to take any responsibility for her transgressions helped lay the foundations for the devastating war which would cripple the Targaryan Dynasty beyond all repair.

One of the reasons I loved House of the Dragon so much is the richness of the characters. Viserys is often perceived as weak and an appeaser but as the series progresses you realise he's a great leader who was holding the realm together. Aemond is also a character I love, the younger brother with an inferiority complex which drives him to be better than his brother in every regard. Daemon is totally mercurial but brilliant. I think it's the benefit of having a smaller cast. Hopefully no ridiculous 11th hour story arcs and heel turns like Game of Thrones 🙏

He put his wife through a pregnancy (and gruesome death) she didn't want, remarried outside the Valyrian blood and had sons but STILL pressured Rhaenyra to be his heir, he ignored his children with Alicent, and turned the blind eye on a lot of issues. He also gave precedence to Rhaenyra but ignored his other children. The issues that causes the almost full destruction of House Targaryen began with him.

I like comparing this scene to the final mission of red dead redemption 2 cuz it’s a slightly inverted version of the same exact situation: RDR2’s final mission is about a lowly, sick, dying man teaming up with his closest people trying to emotional reach their leader of their group who’s lost his way and leading them in evil, cruelty and misery but he’s come too far to admit he’s at fault so he just keeps coming up with plans to try to save everyone but keeps dooming them in the process… meanwhile in House of the dragon it is the leader who is sick and dying and in his final moments is seeing clearly his entire life and everyone else’s and how they are at each other’s throats ready to tear themselves apart which would hurt so many people in the process but they are family so no matter how bad things get family should always stick together and put aside the party grievances and work past the nasty ones cuz they simply don’t matter… but the families feel they have come so far and lost so much that they can’t drop it now and they keep pushing onward regardless of his words… in both endings everyone had the chance to change their fate for the better, both good spare innocent lives and let their pain go but they couldn’t do it, they felt that they HAD to make it all worth something and it with be worth their lives in the end… such powerful stuff here I love it

Viserys was a good man and a good king. Maybe a weak king at times, but he loved his family, and his people. I appreciated that the show gave his death some weight, as the books merely mentioned his death in passing.

His one major flaw was that he loved only Rhaenyra out of all his children. Guy might not even remember that he has another son, Daeron, with the Hightowers.
