I bought this game when it originally came out, spent about 7-8hrs playing it and gave up after getting insanely frustrated with the combat, I just couldn't get to grips with it. I recently decided to give it a try again, this time I slowed down, took my time, watched some tips and tricks like this video and, most importantly, practiced over and over and over with Bernard. Until finally, several levels later, it just started to click, using the perfect block and master strike, not simply holding down block and not spamming attack makes all the difference. Combat in this game is like realtime first person chess, it takes concentration, timing, forward thinking and planning, when you finally realise this, the combat becomes engaging and intense rather than feeling clunky, cumbersome and frustrating. I don't think I've played a game before where it took several hours just to get to grips with the basics of combat. Now, I'm hooked.

Parries have different animations and effects based on the direction of the parried blow. For example, if you parry a stab, you stab them right back. If you parry a lower left slash, your counter is just a kick. If you parry an overhead swing, you respond with one as well. Pretty useful to know when you know an opponent counters well (tourneys or more skilled enemies). If I have to start an exchange, I always start with a lower left slash so in case of a parry, I only suffer a kick instead of a stab or a slash to the face.

It took me way too long to figure out that master strikes and dodges must be engaged at the start of the enemy attack animation, NOT when the little green shield icon appears. Also, clinching is hugely underrated. Get the clinch master perk and use it on skilled foes who are deflecting your attacks. Winning a clinch provides a few precious seconds to attack while the enemy are stunned.
@Noone-of-your-Business

Ah, *_THAT_* explains why they almost never work for me. This is stupid. Then why have the green shield at all? Honestly I love the combat system in Kingdom Come: Deliverance. Admittedly it takes a while to get the hang of, but if you spend enough time on it you can best nearly anyone in the game. It feels extremely rewarding and immersive and you actually have to train hard to get better. Many people don't like the archery because it is hard and there is no aiming reticle (without mods of course), but I personally think it is both realistic and enjoyable. The best knightly weapon against armoured opponents is definitely the poleaxe (with variations, like the lucerne hammer or the "bec de corbin"). Against unarmoured opponents I recommend the longsword. In any case, these advices hold if you are heavily armoured with plate, half-late or milanese brigandine (or similar). Otherwise, grab a shield and arming sword (against unarmoured) and mace or warhammer (against armoured). Remember, the first rule for Historical European (Medieval) Martial Arts is stay alive while winning the fight. ;-)

4:00 - What do you mean: "if you block *_and_* attack at the very start of the animation"? Does that mean you have to hold the block button _AND_ the attack button at the same time? Or does it happen automatically? This "perfect block" keeps confusing me, because it works so rarely, even at maxed out weapon skill. What else plays a role here?

Close Quarters combat master at your service peasants. Combos are mostly useless, because enemies always parry, so the only thing that is worth learning is perfect parry with a following counterattack, dodging kind of works sometimes, but the key word is "sometimes" because even with a "light armor" perk it is kind of broken, often fails you and you get your face smashed in a row of attacks. Clinch with a clinch perk is great too - almost 95% guarantee of a free blow to lay on your enemy. And of course a bow, you don't need to be a sniper to use it effectively, let enemy come close and shoot the face. Almost always oneshot for all nonhelmet or open-face-helmet enemies.
@MetalGamer666

You can hold down block while attempting to dodge, so you don't risk getting whaled on. Perfect block gives me a free riposte even without pressing the attack button if I time it right. Do you get a different attack if you press the attack button at the same time?

If I get surrounded I just run away and hopefully only have to fight one enemy at a time. You need to et the fast sprint in the vitality perks for this. It works well because if you can put some distance between you and the enemy, you can get your bow out and start shooting them. I always put my marker to where I am going to run away to before trying to take on a bunch of enemies

I'm a longsword mainer and I have to say that is the best solution for people who want to keep agile and wear good armor at the same time. Longsword won't give you the defense of an old fashioned shield, but it will be much easier to keep you enemies at distance. A slash you can parry, but a full blunt with a mace will be life-threatening. That's why you should wear at least a ringmail at all times. Longsword and full plate do work well too, but you will lose a lot of speed unless you grind on your strength and agility.

There's actually one more tip and I recently use this to give enemy a fast hard strike: you get closer to them and there will be clenching a sword animation with your enemy. Then you need to fast tap right or left click before enemy could counter you. That will give you a second or two window to land a heavy attack on head. Best to use that with headcracker and sadist perk.

Just a tip for anyone who feels like during combat you can't be aggressive and have to rely on master strikes and perfect blocks to get openings to deal damage, that clinching is by far the easiest way to be aggressive. just run up straight to the enemy, and when you two lock swords, use your quick strike(your stab attack) to knock them away and get 1-2 free hits to a combo. Also prepare for a master strike because usually after doing this the enemy will majority of the time try and attack you again right after that few hits. If they don't attack and just strafe around you, go in for a clinch again. Rinse and repeat. You can also do this against multiple combatants, since enemy AI (at least from my knowledge) don't attack you while you're in a clinch.

The combos would be nice if not for the fact that every bandit knows how to perfect block or whatever it's calles and the only way I can get a hit in is by winning a clinch and rushing in for a hit and hoping that the hit registers because in a fight my fps drops from 21 to 15.

Yup. I feel like the devs didn't even change this considering so many people playing the alpha and beta. I can one shot almost anyone and it's ridiculous. I can take out any person in plate armor with ease and I one shot cumans because of my perk. It makes fights really anti climatic and boring.

This game is really the kind of game you want to have many sequels! Its so immersive in such a way that it relieves your stress from the real world and creates a virtual world of yours living in medieval times, truly one of a kind! Though graphics and physics are not that great, i hope it launches another game wherein you’re a viking or a samurai etc. and can be played on next gen, Truly this is way, waaayyy better than CYBERJUNK2077. You're a blacksmith and there is no blacksmithing in the game. You die of hunger and sleep, but can not create a fire or any kind of makeshift bed. No fishing, mining, etc... Hunting is always "Poaching." Saves require an item (which is fine.) However, with random game freezes and no auto saves, tons of progress can be lost. Still, I'm having tons of fun. However, I don't know about it's replay value without any sort of professions or anything of the sort.
@pf5846

Joshua Hobbs Only replay value here seems to be playing the game as a different play style and weapon choice. Also for role playing purposes as well. My first play through I was a full plated honorable knight serving king radzig. He specialized with the longsword and had a magnificent war horse equipped with the best gear. My second play through currently is an assassin/bandit type character who uses a bow and only a short sword. I'm lightly equipped with dark clothing and have a black horse that is lightly equipped as well. This play through works well with the main story because you are sent a lot on solo missions and it feels right to be a spy/assassin serving under sir radzig.

Knowing and practicing HEMA, or really any kinda martial art will help you immensly. A LOT of times I simply step back out of measure of my opponents weapon while he aimlessly swings. Also, I would argue that for offense a mace would be useful against armoured opponents, but I would prefer to stick to a longsword just for the reach advantage.

This game forces you to play the story if you want to learn anything good about combat. Let's say if I completed the game and I started new game, I would have to play through the same story again just so that Henry can learn how to fight. It's pretty annoying where as skyrim, it's completely sand box and you can do whatever you want. Quests in KCD sometimes feel like a chore and they have you running and forth between villages. I came back from a quest and my lord ordered me to go back to the same village to look into another problem. It's pretty fucking annoying after being in that village for 3 hours already
