I spit my drink out reading this 😂. Thank you guys both on your reviews, my dad likes a nice flat, natural sound curve he just doesn’t know it yet. He asked me to shop for his new house, and said they would be going in actual bookshelves with inches of clearance from the wall, that are pre-wired and built into his entertainment center (along with 4 mystery surround in-ceiling speakers), the front port design and your off-axis, sound staging and imaging experiences were what sold me on these (along with neutral sound), we live 1,100 miles apart now so it will be after break in when I get to hear them and I can’t wait! Bought the matching series center channel since it will get dual purpose hifi and home theater use, and pairing those with a Jamo c910 subwoofer, hope that AccuEQ and Onkyo with an integrated does my dad justice until I arrive.

Nice work Ron. I would like in future reviews a mention of how the bookshelf speakers sound near field on a desk and also how they sound on an actual console. It may sound silly but most folks aren’t putting these guys on stands. For example, I thought the old UB5 would be great on my desk because of point source coaxial...but not so much.

I liked these speakers so much that even after buying Ascend Acoustics 2EX at $1600 for the listening room and Philharmonic BMRs for the theater at $1900 I went back and got a pair of the UB52s for L/R surrounds. Probably overkill for that, but they cost only a little more than the surrounds I was going to use anyway and the ATMOS imaging should be second to none. Thanks again for the review!

Yes, I know they are more expensive, but I have been eyeing them for a while and they are known to go on sale from time to time and when it does, it is closer in price to the UB52's. However, the UB52's go on sale as well and when they go around $400 for the pair, I am wondering if these might be the better bet.

The front port execution on the bass region is so damn complicated to place with unless your placing them in front of your pc or your playing them at a small room. I really like them a lot but I intend to put them on my garage so I pick elac reference debut since they are way better over all. Impedance question. It seems counterintuitive that higher ohms are easier to power. So if I take (2) 4 or 6 ohm speakers and wire them in series to each channel they become 8 or 12 ohms respectively. Then that should make them easier to drive and yet there' are more drivers to power which seems counterintuitive except that hooking them parallel give the opposite effect of 2 or 3 ohms. Is this correct or not correct? Seems that if I want to use more speakers without any adverse effects I could use the series method.

My $.002 The Good: Extremely good value for the buck. There are a ton of truly horrible designs out there, for sure. You could do a LOT worse. I give Andrew Kudo's for wiring the drivers in positive acoustic polarity, if he follows suit from his older designs. While they are not time coherent, positive acoustic polarity gets brownie points, as you don't want the tweeter sucking in as the woofer moves out (Hear that Wilson?) The bad: The concentric design. Any designer who decides a tweeter should be placed in the center of the mid's cone, ignores the math which clearly shows that, in the crossover region, any tweeter will always try to be fully omni-directional (the wavelengths there are 3-7 times the dome's diameter!). The truth of that omni-directional "mathematical assumption" is always verified on sine wave tests, on noise tests, on impulses, tone bursts, on TEF, MLSSA, on EVERY test. Thus, being PROVEN an omni source, any tweeter's low end will ALWAYS "splash" off the mid's cone. Which means the designer will always screw around with the crossover, resulting in "a lot of crossover components", sucking out the bottom end of the tweeter and killing efficiency. Conclusion: Is it right for you? Depends on your level of detailed hearing ability, your upstream components, your room acoustics, the type of music you listen to, etc.
@andrewjones6161
4 жыл бұрын
Hi Dale. Thanks for the comments under "good". I have indeed followed the philosophy of all drivers always connected in positive polarity. This was instilled in me during my 17years at Pioneer as a necessity, and in truth, there is never a need to switch driver polarity to get good integration. It's definitely an easy shortcut often, but it's not necessary. Now for the bad!! There had to be a response from me for that....😉 So....the acoustics of sound radiation......,Based on my degree in physics and acoustics, 6 years of postgrad research, 35 years in the industry designing speakers, over a century of published work on horn theory, and the seminal work of Dr. Earl Geddes on the mathematics of Oblate Spheroid waveguides, shows that what you say with regard to tweeters in waveguides (aka concentric driver cones), is way off base. Tweeters in waveguides or tweeters in concentric drivers or tweeters in horns produce a degree of directivity control beyond what is obtained from the unconstricted radiation of a raw tweeter on a baffle. Indeed it is fair to say that this tailored directivity response is exactly what is needed to optimally match to the directivity characteristics of typical mid-range driver. It's also fact that the action of a waveguide upon the tweeter, restricting it's low frequency directivity and increasing substantially it's low frequency efficiency, makes the job of designing the xover much easier. When combined with a concentric driver, where we no longer have to worry about off axis phase delay mismatch between the drivers, it becomes easier still. I would encourage you do do some more reading, particularly from the theoretical view point, and in particular as I mentioned , the works of Dr. Geddes. You never know, we might end up agreeing with each other. BTW, the complexity of my xover, as illustrated in the photos in the review, has nothing to do with the characteristics of the use of a concentric driver. It is mostly due to integrating correctly the vented box alignment of the vented box woofer to the mid-range at such a low xover frequency.
@daleboylen6427

@@andrewjones6161 Andrew, much appreciate the reply. I think we will have to agree to disagree. I'm from the school of "don't screw up the original waveform". I believe speakers screw up the audio signal more than any other single component in either the recording or playback chain via crossover induced phase shifts. Music is generally recorded as a series of individual mono mic feeds. Microphones cannot hear left, right, up or down. They condense 3 dimensions down to one: distance, which is time. It is therefore vastly important to me, that a speaker doesn't time smear the recordings. I'm from the camp that believes phase shifts and time delays must be minimized, like any other distortion, as any change between input and output other than gain is distortion. Phase delay and time alignment are two different animals. As you know, it is possible to use a 4th order network and still be "phase aligned" but with one full cycle of phase shift (time delay). Having said that, I would buy your speakers over the much higher priced un-named speaker line, who insist on wiring the mid range out of positive polarity. You are a far better designer, in my opinion. Again, thanks for taking the time to reply.

NRD, Ron, is the go-to guy when it comes to getting a true understanding of all-things-audio. Could I say, Ron sets the gold standard for his art. I somehow suspected Andrew Jones was going to sprinkle some fairy dust on the Uni-Fi but much like he did with the new Debut Reference (which I own), he's really created an entirely new speaker. The cross over alone, which I have seen, is a beast of electronic grace and then there is every thing else which Ron covers here. To say I am curious about owning these new Andrew Jones creations is an understatement. If I could wish for but one more improvement? .... Release a version of these with a kick-ass real wood finish. Same, just ordered them of your review. What stands would you recommend? I'm slightly concerned on some of the top plate measurements I've seen out there. I have a cat that occasionally likes to jump on my console and current speakers. I'm afraid he may topple them over if I get the wrong stand. Thanks again for a great recommendation.

My UB5s are still serving me as desktop speakers for the PC. But it seems like these UB52s blow them out of the water. Favourite under $1500 you say? The Adantes were going for under that too when they got price cut. There's also the UF52.... It's just too bad I have pair of floorstanders on the way that would 'relegate' the P3ESRs to the desktop.

What a great speaker to review! ....ruined by cable nonsense. I believed the same thing as a kid and tested different cables when I was around 14 using a good pair for one channel, and extension cord for the other. Tested again at 18 having a guy switch back and forth with high end cables vs normal ones. I changed my mind after being honest with my personal experience and admitting I couldn't accurately tell when the cables were swapped, and then seeing measurements and hearing about blind tests. I'd recommend you do the same. Need more objectivism as the science progresses with audio.

I bought two pairs of UB52's based on your and Guttenburg's reviews. One "B" which had a barely detectable corner smudge that easily yielded to a black magic marker. The 3D holographic soundstage is incredible. Also Elekit 8w Triode and Aegir amps. 10.5' X 13' room.

This is a review done very well, Ron. Some background on my ELAC experiences: I met AJ at Axpona when the original Unifi speakers were introduced. They sounded amazing at the show. I snagged a pair of the "green edition midrange" speakers when they first came out and they were very disappointing in my home setup. I was driving them with plenty of McCormack DNA-125 solid-state amplifier power but the Unifi were just lifeless in my listening environment. Years later, I tried the Debut Reference DBR62 and found them much easier to drive, more flexible in regards to placement, with a very balanced sound from top to bottom, but, they were a bit lifeless. Nothing about them was bad but they weren't very engaging either. I did end up buying the Triangle Borea BR03 speakers and I've been very happy with them. The Borea replaced the concentric driver KEF Q150 in my setup which were quite nice but the Triangle brings so much more to the experience. I appreciate your candid review and I'd like to pit the Uni Fi 2.0 against my Borea BR03 if I can secure a review pair from ELAC.

@@mattynorris610 Yes, I did. I preferred the Triangle speakers but they present a more midrange forward sound over the extremely laid back sound of the DBR62. Eventually, I went with the Wharfedale EVO 4.2 and haven’t looked back. They are that good.

I liked the original but I feel like a 2 way speaker will always be lesser than a 3 way. The original sounded a bit "scooped" albeit very dynamic, clear, and powerful. AJ is a master of the 3 way design and crossover integration.

“I was told that I could listen to the music at a reasonable volume from nine to eleven...” Would’ve liked to see magnetic grilles. Amazing to see Danny ritchie’s rules of thumb being utilized on some of these better reviewed speakers, here for instance the minimum distance between the mid high and mid/bass drivers to reduce the distances from driver center to acoustic center, and the narrower baffle design. Wonder what upgraded crossover components could do for texture and tonality....

@@benfarrow9498 I've got an Audiolab 6000a that is incredible with the UB52s, plenty of power, clean, detailed, good bass control and an excellent soundstage. The 6000a has gotten a lot of love from the British audiophiles on KZitem and I couldn't agree more with their reviews. Unfortunately it's not $500 but is < $1000. The Iota VX SA3 and Emotiva TA-100 (being replaced and is out of stock) are $500 or less and get solid reviews. As does the Cambridge Audio AXR 100 receiver. It's a bit warmer than the others, but for a receiver it's gotten some strong reviews. Ron's review definitely nailed it on the strengths of the UB52s. I love them.

$64000 question (you'll have to be very old to understand that comment ...). Seems hard to imagine that a 2-way can outdo a 3-way designed by the same team and at the same price. But, who knows, only time & lots of reviews will tell.

@@great100m Well, I look at it like this. The DBR62s require 1 less driver and less components in the crossover. So if the build price is the same, it should logically have more money spent on each individual part of the speaker. The woofer is also bigger on the 62s so I imagine a bit more bass from them? Much better design too IMO. Would be fun to hear Andrew Joneses pick.

@@bingoberra18 well I tried asking ELAC directly and here's the answer they gave me: ELAC Customer Service (ELAC) Sep 3, 2020, 9:47 AM PDT Hello, The UniFi 2.0 have a similar tonal character to the Debut Reference speaker. The UniFi 2.0 is better for music as it is a 3-way speaker design where the Debut Reference is a 2-ways speaker. Also the UniFi 2.0 has a concentric mounted tweeter and midrange driver which gives it really good sound stage and imaging. For dual use Music and home theater either one can be used. Go with the Debut Reference if you prefer a nicer looking real wood veneer cabinet. Go with the UniFI 2.0 if having the best sound quality is the number one thing for you. Respectfully, ELAC Customer Service That's not really what I call a precise answer, in fact, it's kinda simplistic. I replied that I was under the impression that aluminum cones would somewhat sound brighter than aramid fiber? I mean, you do lose 2hz of bass extension. Also, I asked if the Unifis are more "lively" than the reference, as the latter were described as being more of a jazz-oriented speaker. I listened to different types of metal on them (with good production) and honestly, I wasn't deceived at all. But maybe IF the unifis are more dynamic, I might prefer them over the reference? I have yet to have received an answer to my 2nd emaik to ELAC...
