One of the most entertaining parts of the novel for me was figuring out which member of Saga represented which band member and why. Golden Gabe was clearly the lead singer; Slowhand was guitar and the backbone/leader; Moog was the crazy keyboardist; Matty was the drummer with his two stick/knives; and Ganelon was the moody bassist (maybe baselines don't change as much as the other instruments do - hints his agelessness?) Awesome book

Glad you liked this one - even if it was pretty much an autowin for old fart rockers like us 😂 It grabbed me with rock & roll references, D&D references and fantasy trope references - it grabbed me by the feels and the funnies. Personally I loved Bloody Rose as well. It's different in a lot of ways - really more like a loosely connected second stand-alone in the same world, with the same background in music.. but it's the 80's baby! Very much looking forward to the third installment 🤘

I am just mid-way reading this book and am absolutely loving it! Your review of the book is absolutely spot-on. (at least so far...). The members of this "band" are indeed flawed in so many ways - just like the rest of us - and that is what makes them so likable and relatable. Yes there are many moments of deep humor and of even deeper heart-ache. There have been many times when I found myself chuckling during a certain passage only to be brought almost to tears at the next. I cannot comment much more as I have, as I say, not finished it yet - but it already easily ranks as one of the most enjoyable books of any genre that I have read in many years. (As to your Led Zeppelin getting back together analogy - as you may know that band reunited for a one-off concert in 2007. One critic noted that "when Led Zeppelin disbanded in 1980 they did so as the greatest band in the world. When they left the stage of the O2 Coliseum in 2007 they were STILL greatest band in the world!" I am hoping Saga will leave the same legacy!).

Kings is definitely one of my absolute favorite books, and you are absolutely correct and saying that it is a great pallet cleanser. I am long time listener of audiobooks, and it never fails to help me reset after complicated books. Bloody Rose on the other hand, I could not quite get into. I guess the first couple of chapters were rough for me and I lost interest fast. I am interested on seeing your review of it, because there have been several books from authors I love that I couldn't get into the first couple of times I tried, then after stepping away from it a while, I came back and I loved it. I mirror your thoughts on the negatives, but for me the positives far outweigh the negatives, and it is a very easy book to either relisten or reread. It holds up on second and third go throughs and one I plan on keeping in my library for a very long time.

I totally see why people like this book but to me, there has never been a more boring read. I really liked the ending though. Apparently I love fantasy for the deeper hidden messages and not just for the joy of the ride.

you dont enjoy... a joy ride. i appreciate exaggeration more than anyone, ever. but calling this: “the most boring read ever”... Robert Jordan put in some solid efforts in that arena.

@@odiums_taint I guess because I chose this describing because it wasn't so bad that I would simply dnf it. Instead I kept reading, one chapter at a time max. So it wasn't the worst read, obviously Eames has interesting characters etc, but it didn't gained momentum for me. Hence the boring

Definitely a breath of fresh air in fantasy, Eames is a fantastic story teller. The only thing that grated me about this book was his occasional use of demotic expressions. It really didn't fit with the style of the book.
