Ray is an ' everyday guy, that lets you into his world with honesty ' he sings about every day life and hardship, which is what most people relate to. he is also the creator of 'heavy metal' with "you really got me... and one of the first to write a pop art poem...legend!!!

Great version!.. Have been lucky enough to have seen The Kinks and Ray several times. Always awesome. Handed down my old concert tshirts to my daughters. Nice to pass on the gift of The Kinks to another generation.

No matter how loud or angry the Kinks got with their sound, there is still an underlying sweetness in just about every song. I wouldn't say that about rap. I wouldn't even say that about their more comparable peers the Stones.

Last comment 1 year ago????? Does nobody watch this video??? I was an avid Beatles fan, and discovered the Kinks only last year...in middle age...just saw Ray Davies in concert in Liverpool (fantastic!) and next day went to the Beatles museum. I am a late convert, but I, too, love the Kinks more than the Beatles!

I'm an early convert - I never liked the Beatles at all, and everything The Rolling Stones did sounds absolutely ancient to me. Even "Start Me Up" doesn't really stand the test of time - I liked it back then, but it sounds really old now. State of Confusion came out when I was 13 and blew me away! I soon realized that The Kinks invented the sound that I know as modern rock. All these years later, everything they did from the very beginning still sounds very modern to me, but I can't say that about anything else from the 60's (though I do like Jefferson Airplane). I saw the Kinks a few times in the 80's, and I was at the Philadelphia concert where part of the Live On The Road album was recorded. They were amazing!

@@scorpgal6087 Thanks for the reply to a post of 11 years ago, lol. I just wanted to say that I know exactly what you mean about certain music sounding "dated", whereas truly the Kinks music stands the test of time. They were innovators in so many respects, even their videos were ahead of their time. Certainly Ray's lyrics are still meaningful today and the songs still sound fresh to me :)

It has occurred to me that the beatles exuded idealism whilst the kinks are all about stoicism. As I get older I find I am more a stoic than an idealist. But God love them both which I think is your point

Mark Morris The Kinks exude an "everyday man" humanity, heart and genuine emotion. Their songs are about pathos, loss and regret tempered with gentle humor, scathing wit, vicious power chords, hope and/or beauty. The Beatles are great, but The Kinks... The greatest rock band ever, featuring one of the greatest songwriters ever.

Thanks for explaining. Maybe the emotion when I found this video drove me to say what I've said. The Beatles are really great, but there's something about The Kinks that makes me feel like friend of them. This can sound a little stupid, I know.

rodrigo suarez I don’t think it sounds stupid at all. I love The Beatles but I enjoy The Kinks even more. I think Ray Davies is a genius with his honest and descriptive lyrics that take you into his world. He’s a storyteller. I love that about him!

Actually all four of The Beatles fronted successful bands after The Beatles broke up. A lot of people forget that back in 1970, it was Ringo who had the most successful solo career initially. All of his early solo singles were a big hit. And his All Starr Band tours have been consistently successful over the course of the last couple decades or whatever it's been that he's been doing them.

I'm, personally, a Kinks fan over the Beatles but I will give kudos to Ringo who, I believe, was the coolest but much miligned of the Fab Four.
