Anton Pann Ensemble "is one of the most popular chamber groups in the context of old Romanian music. This fact is not by chance. It is due to the performances of the members both from an interpretative point of view, as well as in the undertaken of these research, the ensemble being founded by the composer, conductor and byzantine music specialist Constantin Raileanu. Thus, it is evident the enthusiastic reaction of the public to the proposal launched by the ensemble "Anton Pann", a concert-show based on the Kira Kiralina ballad.
The premise of the event was to present a musical route of the heroine, starting with the Braila area music, passing through the Mediterranean space music and reaching the area of Morocco at the narrative end of the ballad. Beyond the Balcano-Mediterranean music presented along the way, the public also enjoyed the improvisation moments of the musicians.
"What you will hear tonight is a version of this story--Kira Kiralina. But in order to have the reason to create this wonderful meeting that we were repeating in fact - it happened for the first time last year in Morocco, when we were invited by the French Cultural Institute and together with the musicians you will see tonight we created this project, Kira Kiralina, designed to explore the fertile and colourful sonorities of the rich and fascinating Mediterranean space from Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Tunisia and Spain, to Morocco.
Therefore, what we present this evening is not necessarily the sad story of the Kira that has been kidnapped, it is actually the reason that allowed us this cultural journey from Romania to Morocco."- said Constantin Raileanu, founder of the ensemble "Anton Pann", in the opening of the concert.
Along with the Romanian musicians:
Constantin Raileanu -vocals, kanun and musical coordinator
Sabin Penea - violin
Alexandru Stoica - Oud (short-neck lute)
Andrei Nitescu - cello
Issa Garfi - flute/Bansouri/ney
have completed the exotic story three gifted Moroccan artists :
Mahmoud Chouki - guitar and louthar
Tawfik Belkhdar - percussion
Roaa - Vocals
The proposed music is syncretic, combining jazz with archaic musicality specific to the cultural spaces through which the ballad takes us. On the verge of reality and legend, the story of the young innkeeper Kira Kiralina from Braila crosses times, fascinating writers, filmmakers and musicians, both by its thrill and by the oriental fragrance emanating from every scene.
Concert repertoire included musical pieces from the "Love Hospital" collection, by Anton Pann, and from Romanian, Turkish, Egyptian or Tunisian folklore, as well as musical pieces composed by the members of the ensemble and their guests.
The most appauded moments were the pieces composed by Mahmoud Chouki, combining North African stylistics with harmonic jazz language.
Among the main attractions of the evening were the digital animations on the walls of the Radio Hall, exceptionally designed by Oana Benko Raileanu, meant to help the public to visualise certain narrative scenes, which is a novelty in the context of old Romanian music.
This show is part of the series of exceptional events organized by Anton Pann Ensemble, such artistic initiatives are necessary and, obviously, admirable.
Computerland Romania has supported as the main sponsor the organization of the show "Kira Kiralina" on 29 September at the Radio Hall, in the interpretation of the Anton Pann Ensemble .
