Amid all the tensions ramped up by both China and Pelosi, the DPP and President Tsai are the most disappointed that nothing dramatic of military friction had happened. It is like a snake instigating the dragon to bite the hawk, so that the snake just watch the destruction of their conflict. Fortunately the dragon is too smart with wisdom not fall into their plot. DPP and Tsai enjoyed one night, one day joyful party, but the hangover and pains that follow will be long lasting till these separatist cease their ambitions.

China's style of capitalism requires ever growing markets to absorb all of its excess production. That is why the BRI is so critical to its economic health. However, the breakdown of global supply chains is now threatening this model, leaving China very dependent on energy and food imports with uncertain export markets for its manufactured goods.

@kishore, lets get real. the chief reason why asean maintains a relationship wit the PRC today, even though in the past historically many asean countries were against the communist PRC, is becos of TRADE and the promise of potential economic wealth let us also not forget abt the effects of the nine dash line territorial claims made by the CCP on the asean nations. after what we have seen with taiwan, there is a real and present danger that the CCP may exert similar pressures on asean nations when it comes to the waters of the south china sea.

Americans are free to do what exactly? The freedom to own unregistered guns, be scammed by the very same politicians that it elects, to be ruled by seven "justices" with impunity, to be functionally powerless against its "democratic" government, to be a slave to the debt trap set by its 1%, to pay for warmongering individuals using dark-money, er tax-payer money to satisfy their infantile curiosities, to have diminishing upward mobility, or a useless and expensive college degree, or an increasing impoverished population? If you compare America to a third-world nation, then it's great, but merit, integrity and grit doesn't get you all that much farther than the other. If you idolize America like it were 1946, then you probably live there still. America isn't free, you have, are, and will continue to pay for it regardless of where you are.

Prof Mahbubani is very objective. Anyone who doesn't agree with people's personal prejudices, is smeared as sympathizer/appeaser. India harbors grudge against China because of border dispute which will never get resolved. India is unable to come to terms with China which is six times India's economy even though they started at same level in 1980. India wants to follow western style of democracy which doesn't suit India and has become a chaotic tribal kleptocracy.

No country is aligned with the USA against China? Really? How about Taiwan. As to China, demography alone will finish them as a great power. The 2020 Chinese census data shows 1) China has the fastest-aging population in the world, 2) the CCP overcounted 100 million Chinese, most of which were females below 40 due to aborted female fetuses (families preferred sons during One Child), 3) the current Chinese population of 1.3 billion will decrease to less than 600 million by 2100, and 4) by 2080 there will be more post-65 pensioners than workers - which is a crushing burden for workers. In addition to demographic collapse China has to deal with having to import most of its energy, much of its food, contaminated land and water, and a growing financial problem in their small banks, severe residential construction market contraction, debt bubble in municipalities, and huge amounts of debt in the private sector - all at the same time. it will be interesting to see if the CCP can address all of these stresses. It seems unlikely that China will be the hegemon of the 21st Century if it has half-empty cities of pensioners. In the meantime America is energy independent and the largest crude producer in the world, more natural gas than we can ever use, has abundant natural resources, is a major food exporters, has little reliance on trade, has world class high-tech manufacturing, abundant land for more people, many allies and friends across the globe, the dollar as the world reserve currency, and is one of the only industrialized countries with a stable demography (the others are Sweden and France). Also consider: where do immigrants want to go? America, not China. America is a nation of immigrants, and new people and new ideas renew the American experiment.

You may be right that US has abundant natural resources and is a major food exporter. Can you explain why it's experiencing highest inflation in 40 years? It's not so simple, I think. Also, US has > $33T of debt which it may never be able to pay off. Paying interest on this debt is not productive at all. And this burden falls on Americans of this and many more generations following. As to the US$ being the reserve currency of the world. It serves this purpose if it is used in a productive and neutral way. Since it has been weaponized, you can't blame people on the receiving end looking for alternatives. And people will not wait to be on the receiving end to find alternatives. We'll see how it goes.
