Back in 1977 I was a huge 12 years old and was a HUGE Elvis fan and when he died in August of 77 I was among the millions who was devastated. About a month after his death my mother and I went to a local store in Derby Kansas called TG&Y, it was basically a 1977 version of Walmart. She told me I could buy one new album and after a few minutes I came to her and showed her the brand new Elvis Presley record that had been released just prior to his death. My mother, with her motherly instincts knew i was having a hard time letting go of him, and even though she herself was a huge Elvis fan she suggested I put that album back and "get something that kids today your own age are into.". I literally had no idea what "kids my age" were into. We had just moved to Kansas from Michigan and I did not know any of the local radio stations and I had no friends since I was brand new to the area. So I returned to the albums area and began looking through the what seemed to be Trillions of albums with all these weird names and faces I had never seen. Then this one album caught my eye, it had this circle on it with these four cartoon like drawn faces and there was lightning bolts and fire and bright colors and this name that i pronounced "KIZZ" on the four corners. I brought it to her and she just looked at it and said OK. I took it home and put it on my fancy dancy suitcase style single speaker record player and I WAS BLOWN AWAY!! I was used to hearing things like Elvis or CCR or The Ventures and here was this group playing these huge power chords with loud guitars and blazing guitar solos and by the time I got to the end of that album, I wanted more!! For about a month I would pronounce their name as KIZZ because of the lightning bolt shaped S's. It wasn't until I just happened to catch a TV commercial for these dolls that I learned their name was KISS lol. That album was "Rock and Roll Over" and as far as I am concerned it is still their best album ever!! Nothing but hard hitting rock and roll, no fancy effects or long winded drawn out ballads, just pure rock and roll. Fast forward to 2019 and imagine my surprise when I learned that in Memphis Tennessee at the home of Elvis Presley there is a section in one of the many buildings surrounding his home called Graceland and this section is " Artists influenced by Elvis" and one of the bands there is KISS! With lifesized statues of the original four members in full makeup and costume! To see my two favorite childhood "idols" linked together like that was awesome!! KISS often times catches flack for being a "no talent" band, but if you actually listen to their music they are just as talented as any other rock band and have some awesome guitar and drum licks that are not as easy to play as people think. I play guitar and drums and of course I play along with KISS songs. I can play along with Def Leppard or AC/DC or Ted Nugent or DIO and even Cinderella but the band that has my hands moving up and down the fret board and playing the most chords in a song is KISS, not bad for a "no talent" band to be able to play all over the fret board in almost every song. I love AC/DC but their rhythm parts, all be it great, are actually mostly in one area of the fret board and the same three chords utilized in every song lol. So an actual "3 chord" band is credited as being one of the most talented and a band who plays a lot more chords and not your typical "easy" chords but instead a little more harder to play chords is deemed as being a "no talent" band. It was because of the makeup that KISS got this reputation. People think they are ONLY about the makeup and the show and their songs are just easy to play and stupid. You just heard one of their earliest songs, did it sound like a simple 3 chord song to you? As far as the saying that KISS is only about the stage show and their music sucks, then why is KISS the number ONE American band with the most gold records? You don't see their stage show when you pop in a CD so evidently a lot of people must like their actual music right? Great video and yes, just real guitar playing with no effects, not bad from a 22 year old lead guitarist who can't even read guitar music lol.

Yep, no pedals or effects... Ace played off the bottom pickup and adjusted the distortion on the amp itself. They also tuned a half-step down. The drum set was lifted by guys behind the stage with ropes trying to lift all at the same time. Awesome!

Kiss was never better than they were in 1975/76. They were hungry, and they were a machine. Success was the worst thing that could have happened to them.

I've seen them live several times, with two different lineups. This has been my favorite Kiss song since I was 11 when I got Alive on vinyl. In fact it's the reason I have a cowbell on my drum set even though I almost never use it.

@@claudettesmith8328 Yeah that's why Aerosmith backed out of the rest of that tour. It was supposed to be like a 6 month tour with a two month break around Christmas time and like a week after the break began Aerosmith people informed the KISS people that "due to issues within their band they would be unable to continue the tour" LOL. If you take notice of something else, up to that point you didn't hear the guys in Aerosmith saying anything negative about KISS, it was only after that tour that Joe Perry and Steven Tyler said stuff about Gene and Paul, Kramer was talking trash about Peter Criss and the KISS drums in general. I have talked with a few people who said the shows were great, but all of the articles coming out at that time were saying how fans were literally asleep during the performance by Aerosmith and that Aerosmith would mess up a lot during their shows yet KISS was flawless night after night after night. I like both bands and it's too bad Aerosmith has to do what they do now and try to tear KISS down. There is just something more electrical about a KISS show and most bands cannot pull off a successful performance that keeps the audience's energy level up like a KISS show can do. This is why Def Leppard chose to let KISS close the shows when they toured with KISS, they knew better lol.

Black Diamond is Kiss swan song..its a masterpiece. Forget boring led Zeppelin. Yeah they are ok..but soooooo dated now.. to me they were too bluesy folksy rock band..Not like Kiss..then you got your rainbow..I like them but too much lord of the rings lyrics iron maiden copied and they are more spinal tap than spinal tap. Deep purple again..dated and too bluesy.. I'd take Kiss any day over those bands..Kiss like AC-DC are hard rock and full of charisma. Seeing Kiss live playing Black Diamond is one thing you gotta see.

If KISS had retired and hung it up with the Farewell tour, they would have died Heroes... instead they have lived long enough to become villains. They had some really great music though... too bad they bastardized it for cheap profit.
