Larry - I hope this doesn't stray too off-topic. This is the 86th of your videos I've watched so far, and I'd like to say thanks. (That's a HUGE understatement.) I've learned to keep a notebook handy while watching your posts. I've been collecting stuff for a layout for 30 years. Only recently am I able to begin building it. I've learned a great deal in the time spent anticipating building my own road. But even those of your videos that are on subjects I think I'm well versed in always have some information or insight that's interesting and useful. When someone can spend three decades getting ready to build a layout and still find themselves in need of further guidance, that only says how much knowledge is needed, to do it well. Your wealth of knowledge is really phenomenal. Your willingness to share that knowledge is a whole 'nuther thing. I cannot be the only person who has avoided a lot of grief because of your generosity in sharing what you've learned. As for this video in particular: you just solved my problem with what to do with a blank spot in my plans, and gave me a lot more to look forward to in terms of future operations. I'd forgotten the gas works in the town I grew up in. As big as it was, it's amazing how we overlooked it all the time. So, I get a chance to add some interesting things, I get to do some more interesting operating, and I get to base it all on my own long-dormant memory of our old gas works. I don't know how to say sufficient thanks. I will, though, try as best I can to turn every other modeler I know, on to your really impressive body of work. I love model railroading for a lot of reasons, not the least of them being the generosity of the community. Your gift to us all is way up there. Thank you, and all best wishes! Gene Barfield

One model railway I can name with a gas works is the now-historic old British OO layout 'Buckingham' by Peter Denny. I've watched some videos of it on KZitem, and it made me think about putting a gasworks too after seeing one there. Thanks from Australia for making this video on modelling gasworks.

I believe the famous Ashburton N-scale layout has a gas works behind the station, at least it was there on the prototype. It is kind of hard to see on the layout as it is behind the station, across the tracks, and up the hill a bit. However I have never seen one modeled on a US layout. I think they disappeared too long ago.

Enjoyed your history lesson. In Melbourne Australia we still had the floating gasometers until 1969 when we converted to Natural Gas from gas wells in Bass Straight off the Victorian coast. Cheers Peter.

Well done, Larry!! You’re making a very attractive gasworks. I’ve always considered the gasometer the most attractive part of the whole gasworks.

My gran used to live within sight of the town gas works at Fleetwood. The big gasometer (tank) used to go up and down depending how much gas was in storage. It's the site of the Asda super store now.

The history you provide is fascinating Larry-Thanks for sharing. Off topic but where do your interests in GWR/SR come from as a US Modeller?
@TheDCCGuy
2 жыл бұрын
When I was in my late teens The Flying Scotsman made its US tour and that drew my attention to UK railways. I also remember seeing ads in the US modeling mags for the Bulleid Pacifics, that distinctive nose treatment really got my attention. But back then Hornby did not have a great reputation in the US and for years I concentrated on my US Southern Railway models. Then a few years ago I ran across some Uk model layout videos on KZitem, especially Much Murkle, and the interest was reignited. After I assembled a number of GWR locos my interest turned to the UK SR especially when Rails announced the Wainwright 4-4-0. I also picked up an SR 0-6-0 to keep it company and recently added 2 Blulleid Merchant Navy models. If Hornby comes out with a release of West Country Class or Battle of Britain models next year I expect I’ll be adding one of those. The mechanism in the new Merchant Navy models is the best on any current production steam locos I have seen.

In the UK not all Gas Works were rail fed, my local town had sidings at the station and loads were then road transported. Some of the holders are still on Gas Depot sites, or have been converted for other uses. On google maps look up the Oval cricket gound and look North, or head North of Kings cross station and there are some very expensive properties on the foot print of Gasometers. I think the issue for a lot of UK modellers is that Gas Production sites tended to be huge and would take up a lot of space. Some even had internal standard or narrow gauge lines to move products about.

I have only seen one of his articles on operating that layout and don’t remember it being in the section he showed. I an sure they’re been modeled but just not very common which is a shame given they’re a good industry for switching.

I remember the tanks as a kid and thought they were neat but ,dumb is dumber , I always thought that gas was gas --- natural gas. Thanks for history lesson. If you don't know history you won't understand the "why". You also will have to relive it. In most cases --- UGH!!

I realize this ques does not follow this video, but I am very frustrated. I bought some iPhone 4and 5 speakers for sound decoder installs. I paired one with a Tsunami sound decoder. I don't see what the big deal is. What's the trick? It does not sound all that great. Its just "ok". The regular soundtraxx speaker sounds better. Is the iPhone speaker supposed to blow me away? I don't get it. I tried the 4 and the 5. I dont get it. What's the big deal?
@TheDCCGuy

Well, what did you install it in? And did you adjust the equalizer the Tsunami decoder for micro size speakers? Personally I have only used one iPhone 4 speaker and it sounds about as good as my sugar cube speakers.

Well, it sounds ok but not outstanding. Bli locos sound outstanding! I put it in a P2K PB unit. I think I may b expecting too much. Thanks my friend
@TheDCCGuy

BLI locos sound outstanding because they have a speaker, enclosure, and decoder that are tuned and tweaked for that specific locomotive. Also the model is designed for sound to maximize sound output. Sugar cube and iPhone soeakers cannot perform to that same level but they fit i tight spaces that the BLI speaker would not. I used a 1” high bass speaker in my steam locos to get the sound I am happy with. I also have used two sugar cubes in a LL E6 and it is too loud believe it or not. To some degree getting great sound from a decoder is an art form that takes experimentation to find the right combination and the bigger the better.

I know that there’s such a thing as a gasometer. It’s actually what the gasworks holds the gas in.
@prc789

Careful with calling it a Gasometer, as it sets of an extremely detailed argument over the proper name, I know as I got drawn into one. The term Gasometer is understandable and is the name that the general public know, but it is not the proper name (it is one that I use frequently as everyone understands it) but those that worked in the industry,and being in the UK there are still plenty of model railway people that once worked in gas works, will insist that the proper term is Gas Holder. There is a very good book on modeling heavy industry, Modelling Heavy Industry: A Guide for Railway Modellers by Arthur Ormrod, that details how to scratch build a Gas Holder/Gasometer as most of the kits are way under sized.

@prc789

@@Madonsteamrailways I'm the same, my attitude is, if you understand what's being talked about, it doesn't matter what you call it. Some people get really precious about technical terms! More people know the term Gasometer for these structures, and many of them would not understand what you meant if you called them Gas Holders. The term Gasometer for these originates from the Victorian era and originates from William Murdoch, so is technically a correct term....

You need to read the fine print on those pages. In most cases the photos can only be copied/downloaded for noncommercial PERSONAL use only, and it cannot be further disseminated or displayed. With a KZitem video it has to be downloaded and embedded into the video file which violates the copyright in several ways. I would have to purchase the commercial display rights to use them. And as the man said when the monkey peed on the cash register, that can run into money!
