The worm gear on the K5SS is plastic. It breaks easily. I had one and had to pay for service and replacement of the gear (in the early 80’s) when it was only a few years old. I gave that one away when my MIL passed away, and kept her older K5-A. It has metal gears. That one has been running strong for 50 years. I do plan on getting it serviced after the holidays, in hopes it lasts another 50 years. This is Mr. Mixer repairing a K5aa, and you can see the damaged plastic worm gear. kzitem.info/news/bejne/op6vv4msmmSTmqQ
