When my mother renovated her kitchen in the early nineties, she imported white cabinets from Germany and had her counters made of soap stone when everyone else was doing cherry cabinets and granite. She even painted the walls in a light, warm gray. We thought it a weird choice and maybe a nod to my Dad’s Navy days, but it looked cozy and really pretty. with the bright white trim. We recently sold the house and the kitchen was still in excellent condition and the kitchen sold it. Her reasoning was she wanted to see fingerprints so they could be quickly cleaned and virtually indestructible counters. She also put polished slate counters into our vacation home. I actually put a pan I set on fire on that counter and it did no damage at all. She was ahead of her time.

Art school communal digs had me painting the brick fireplace and wood trim black, another student rental had me painting all my bamboo furnishings red lacquer. Still at it and loving all the changes. For the first time, I'm living in an apartment that doesn't have an OTR microwave and I hate it. Like I hear you on all the reasons not to do it, especially if you have a large kitchen or pantry. But a microwave is indespensible for my partner, and I still find it the easiest way to reheat wet foods or melt a little bit of butter, so if it's not over the range it WILL be taking up valuable counter space. And having it at eye height means I don't have to bend over to keep an eye on my food. So yeah, in a high-end kitchen design with lots of space there are some great alternative options, but there are also lots of reasons I don't think it's going anywhere in smaller/budget kitchens.

You can mount it over the counter. It's lower (safer not to reach overhead) and you have somewhere underneath to put the hot dishes down on the counter. I had this in one apartment and loved it. These OTR microwaves are so huge and bulky, I hate reaching overhead with hot dishes, and I hate having to step sideways to put the hot dish down since I'm cooking on my stove. Plus, OTR is not safe for kids.

I have nice ceramics on them I use daily, as well as things I've found thrifting. I went with shelving over cabinets as cabinets would have made the kitchen narrower. Pretty happy with the results and easy to keep things clean since they are on the small side.

I have a galley kitchen in an apartment from the same era, and put it some shelves to keep things open as well and I love it. I use mine as a pantry, keeping foods like oats, lentils, rice, etc. in decorative jars, as well as an ornate box for organizing tea, a plant, and a little brass watering can. The trick is to make it functional rather than purely decorative, and keep the mess behind closed doors.

Cabinets have framed glass doors and wallpaper inside, more fun than just white wall behind the China and glass. 5 years ago I painted the chocolate brown uppers creamy white and the lowers a light sage green, after a farrow & ball French green and added colored glass knobs, we've enjoyed it a LOT! It brightened and opened up the weirdly long kitchen and became much happier. So did I!

I'd love to put in delft blue tiles for example - something very classic and in tune with the area that will stand the change of times and is also more permanent to the building than the wallcolour you know. I don't want it to be a museum but I also don't want to try to chase trends - I wouldn't like that anyways but especially not in an old house like that. We'll see. Open shelving out? Thank GOD. In our kitchen we went with small (height wise) MW that has an integrated hood/exhaust that is vented through the roof. I did NOT want a microwave to sit anywhere on my counter so this seemed like the best option. It's pretty sleek and is very efficient at exhausting cooking smell/smoke/heat, etc. If I could've figured out where to put the MW inside a cabinet (and believe me, we tried) I would've and then had only a hood over the range. It seems like the best compromise.

An appliance garage and a cabinet with an apothecary pull-out were the best decisions with our kitchen reno. Integrated appliances have been standard here in Europe since the 80s. We have 'split stoves' where the ceramic hub is integrated in the countertop and the baking oven is integrated in a cabinet at breast hight, so you can access the oven without having to bend down, which is very convenient, and the open oven door will not block the access to the stove when cooking (which can be very annoying in European small kitchens). Another thing I can recommend and wich is still popular here: glass backsplash. I love it! You can get it in different colors and it's so easy to clean because you have no grouts at all. And I think it is a lot more cost-efficient than stone.

People really tend to ignore the AFFORDABILITY of open shelving -- cabinetry is expensive, and for those of us with less money, small kitchens, or little natural lighting, open shelving can be a really nice solution. In my home, we are fairly minimalist, so putting all our dishes (all black and white) out on open shelving and storing food in the limited cabinet space means the kitchen feels more spacious and brighter, AND we don't have to spend extra money installing more cabinets that take up more floor space.

Like a broken clock that’s right twice a day, I occasionally happen to be right on trend with my interior decorating! We are lucky enough that my grandfather was an artist and we have more original paintings than wall space, so yes we have several original art pieces in the dining room section of our kitchen. For backsplash: for those people like me that can’t afford a slab of marble or even quartz countertop material as backsplash: we used large format tiles in our kitchen renovation last year. We used 2x4‘ tiles with very narrow grout, so that it looks like a slab. We used tiles that have a slight three dimensional profile to give it some interest. Lastly, I think people spend too much time on the looks of the kitchen and not enough on the functionalilty (how to organize a kitchen). I see high-end kitchens with fancy appliances and marble countertops, but they don’t seem to have drawers. We have drawers for all bottom cabinets and it’s such a game changer. No crawling into the back of the cabinet to find lost items. You pull the drawer out and everything is there to see. We have deep drawers for pots and pans. You can put the pans vertical with dividers and safe space. And than there are pull-out options for spice racks, or deep pantry cabinets etc. Kitchen sink is also something worth carefully thinking about in terms of functionality. I love our workstation sink for example.

Kitchens get dirty quickly. I would suggest that any artwork in your kitchen needs to be able to stand up to your kitchen cleaning rountine, or be covered and protected from grease and grime. I've use decrative hand made ceramic pieces because I know I can clean them. Coffee stations: be careful what you put above the coffee station. We found that some cabinet manufacturers claim any coffee maker that produces steam or heat will void your cabinet warranty. So we put our coffee station in fron of a window to above a cabinet above it.

When I was chosing yile for our kitcehn backsplash there was one tile that looked like a Mondrian painting. I loved it because it was mostly white but had pops of colour. My partner vetoed it. So I put in wavy large white subway tiles.

Open shelving in a kitchen is a big no for me - especially around the stove - yuk. The only kitchen open shelving I've seen that I liked was in this video at the end of the island with the cookbooks - that was attractive. I too, have artwork and a table lamp in kitchen - always have! ❤

Love all white kitchens! White cabinets, white /gray quartz counters, a white hutch with black quartz counter, natural oak floor, cabinets had a couple with glass panels to display bright Fiesta dishes. Walls painted aqua with colorful accents. Would love to have a kitchen like that again.

Aha, I am ahead of the trend! I bought this cute signed print in NOLA to put above my sink. BecUse my kitchen isn’t open concept, I’ve let myself go much cuter in the kitchen. Lots of yellow, strawberry red, and general silly kitschy-ness that wouldn’t go with the rest of my home.

I absolutely LOVE open shelving for MY purposes, which is to have easy access to frequently used pots and pans. I can't stand having to dig through my cabinet to get to a pot that is currently sitting at the bottom of a stack of others, having to take them all out, dismantle the stack and put it back to then do it all over again when I have to put the one I used away after washing.

I have now a pan holder for that. But it only works if you have a huge drawer. Which was for me the best choice in my new kitchen. I have 4 huge drawers instead of cabinets

Nick really would have hated the kitchen in my last house, the cabinets had glass inserts in the doors, so you had the esthetic of open cabinets with the inconvenience of having to open the doors 🤢 We added frosting to the glass so at least you couldn't see inside the cabinets.

NOT a fan of table lamps on kitchen counters (in most cases)...always just want to SWAT them out of the way in favor of usable work/prep space. Under cabinet lights a big PLUS... Table Lamps not so much!

Purchased my grandma’s house (as is) since I couldn’t stand to see it sold to a stranger… finally have the house cleared out, so time for décor! As soon as I was thinking of building a shelf and moving my microwave to over the stove, to make room for this lamp I apparently need in the kitchen, he tells me over the range microwaves are out 😳 LOL! My girlfriend and I would love to have a designer come and help us 😩

A total kitchen renovation is very expensive, but an affordable option to change your color scheme is refacing the cabinets. Also, you can simply paint the cabinets.

I am in the process of renovating my home. As I have a few artists in the family, we want to accommodate pieces in every room of the house. Part of the renovation is a large pantry that will house as much as possible (dry/canned goods as well as dishes, flatware, and less used appliances/cookware) so there will a lot more room in the actual kitchen. Very little cabinetry, which I never liked anyway. I like the lamp idea. And, I'm short...........no over the range microwave for us!

I HATED the open shelving trend for kitchens! And …. builders loved it! Imagine how much money they saved! Greasy/dusty dishes, nowhere to store anything and shelves always being a mess that you had to manage all the time.

My perfect kitchen: big window as backsplash into outdoor area and beautiful nature, super functional with cabinetry and pen-tree for extra storage because I cook 😂, natural tone colours of wood, a bit of plants to bring nature again, fridge and stove hidden with same cabinetry

I was shocked to hear over the range microwaves are hated. I didn't have one in my home growing up. Just a microwave on the counter so I always thought it was kinda fancy. The condo I bought came with an over the range microwave and I love it. A downside to an over the range microwave is if the microwave breaks you have to pay hundreds of dollars for a new one and there difficult to install.

I created a walk-in pantry like my mom had, and for the same reason. I love it so much, I did the same in every house. It is a corollary to my huge vegetable garden and food preservation and storage. I don't need a huge kitchen. I can use less desirable real estate. In this house I used an 8x10 absurd extra bedroom.

I have old art stored in a closet from previous homes. I am going to try some of them out in the kitchen. Thanks! P.S. So glad you feel white kitchens are out. I still have my original honey oak cabinets. I prefer finishes that actually exist in nature. I gave my cabinets a facelift with different knobs and hinges. They look amazing!

I think - all white kitchen and have your accessories add the color. A white kitchen with pops of red looks clean, fresh and pretty. A lot less expensive to change out your accessories to fit your mood, than to reno an entire kitchen. Now days, they can cost as much as a car!!!

I have all white appliances - the push back from the store when I ordered was wild! I wanted the white appliance look with white subway tile but a more neutral cabinet (greigish stained wood) to balance the white. I have a mix of open storage (pots and pans hanging rack above the stove instead of cabinets, magnetic knife rack, and prime spices in open shelving near the stove) but other cabinets are closed for hiding the clutter and cheaper kitchen stuff. For my kitchen which is used a lot, functional wins, but love to have some easier to change pieces to reflect trends. But all other rooms I love your input. :)

Nick, I’ve had 4” flat ivory tiles with white grout on my countertops since 1990. We were planning on granite at the time but due to foundation issues we had to rob the $20,000 for granite and after that issue could only afford the tile. It’s been easy care. Bulletproof. Everyone always talks about how hard it is to clean between the grout but it’s not that difficult with a handled sponge and a bleach cleaner at times. It still looks really good. We both cook and entertain a lot. No one has died in our kitchen or even gotten sick as far as I know. I also bake and I have a large cutting board for rolling out pastries, and cookies. But we want to redo our kitchen and keep our light maple cabinets because they are simple, and very high-quality. It would be a shame to just rip those out. PLEASE DO a video about countertops. You mention a few here but need more inspo. We are definitely removing the 12” floor tile with almost 1” grout! That grout has been a pain for ever. Thanks!

We have a microwave above our oven and it's the first thing we'd probably change with renovation. It vents directly onto the cabinet above it so the cabinet gets greasy! For people who love to cook it's not it sis... I'd MUCH rather have a vent hood that vents properly than have to clean grease off of the cabinet.

I did have an open shelf kitchen that worked well. But that was because it was so tiny that regular cabinets and the doors actually took up too much space relatively speaking. And also that meant everything on the shelves was used so regularly they didn't have time to get grimy. It was very functional for the space but so not Instagramable lol. I think it falls under the category of "the exception proves the rule" as it was such a specific situation.

Can i make a suggestion for video editing? Can you make the red border green when showing images that you like... the "Do's", and keep the red border for the "Don'ts". 🤷♀️ I think about this in all of your videos since i guess im simple and when i see a red border i often wonder if i missed something and youre showing the "Don'ts" 😅

If you are designing a new kitchen, the most important feature is venting the cooking smoke and smells and grease, OUTDOORS. The power of your fan under the hood is of major importance. If you cook a lot, you cannot be without it. Just having the exhaust fan without exit will dispel microscopic grease particles all over your walls and cabinets, soon all the surfaces become sticky and it goes through the rest of the house, on your fabrics etc. And strong cooking Odours linger for days.

Imtegrated appliances have always been popular in Europe but we actually opted to not integrate our appliances this time. The reason being: 1) an integrated dishwasher doesn't show the time left - extremely inconvenient, we had one before and everyone I know has one, but we opted for a partially integrated one where you can see the time left 2) by buying the fridge seperately we didn't have to go without a fridge for months we bought the fridge when we needed it also less stuff to clean 3) coffee maker, egg cooker, bread cutter - all not integrated, all stored away in a drawer and taken out when needed. I personally feel that integrated coffee makers and bread cutters have a few too many folds where crumbles have to be swept away every day, whil non-integrated ones you can just lift them up and clean around them. We have a white kitchen with the usual wooden countertops, which will never go out of style and I love the colour because you can change the looks easily without doing anything to the kitchen. For colour use wooden floors, paint the walls, hang a different lamp, decorate the doors, using window colours if you are an artist (i'm not but my sister once made me beautiful stickers, that went around the knobs and just made it look really fancy for a bit) I always have the calendar in the kitchen and choose one with beautiful photos, so I have a new look every month. Use different coloured curtains or just white ones, whatever you like. (But not those thick curtains you have in the US, the lace ones) What we thought was really important: the option to take off the fronts especially on drawers. And integrated seperators for cuttlery. Also: big drawers over small ones.

Most of my reasons for the not over the range microwave are all functional. I want a really good vent system over my cooktop. And invariably someone is trying to use the darn thing while i am busy cooking. And that someone being me doesn't make it convenient. Besides, what i really want as a microwave is a combination convection microwave oven. And that i would like above the built-in electric conventional oven. I grew up with a kitchen with 2 very large wall ovens. As a teenager i baked all the bread used in a household of 8 plus regular guests. We entertained. We used those ovens. I miss those ovens.
