As a beginner kiter, a lot of the mistakes made are accidentally steering a kite in the wrong place. This can often come from holding the bar out on the end, particularly with one hand. For that reason most of the time you are holding the bar it's a good idea to hold your hands close to the centre line.
Holding the bard close to the Center:

Moving the kite around too much is ineffective. In fact, when learning it is common to oversteer the kite. the kite is great at flying and almost all the input it needs can be done with your hand close to the centre line. This will help your ride by stabilising the kite and making sure you don't have anything unexpected happen.
Often a mistake can happen when holding the bar to close to the ends (outside) and then becoming distracted by, picking up your board, waves, crashing and getting water in the face etc. This can lead to aggressive and unexpected power that can easily throw you onto the beach etc,. While it can take a bit longer to get the feel for flying the kite with your hands close to the centre line and it does tasks slightly more effort in your wrists to make the kite steer, I've always found that to be easy to overcome and the benefits of a reliable kite partially help you progress faster and with more confidence.
