This story here is "THE ORIGIN OF HORNBILL" The story goes like this: Once upon a time, a group of folks(aloji) worked in the fields. Among the group, two woman had the babies; one had a boy child named Kivigho and the other woman in a group had a girl child named Khauli(girl). Both the babies were being breast-fed by their mothers. The babies were always taken to the field by their mothers(as it was a practice in the past). As these children grew up, they became lovers. Khauli belonged to a wealthy family while Kivigho belonged to a poor family and eventually, Khauli was married off to a boy from another village. Kivigho was grief-striken. Yet he accepted his harsh fate, life went on like that. One evening, some of Khauli's friends tried to test Kivigho's love for her by telling him to carry "flamed charcoals"(amibalu) on his hands to Khauli's village. To prove his true love, Kivigho did this. On reaching the village, night fell and he saw Khauli coming out of her house. Kivigho called out for her and Khauli instantly recognised his voice and covered him with a bamboo casket (akho) fearing that her husband might see him(Kivigho). Morning came and Khauli sent her husband with the "first group of people" (khepumi) who were leaving for the fields. Then she met Kivigho and they planned to return to their native village. On their way, Khauli felt hungry so Kivigho climbed a fruit tree to pluck some fruits, but he couldn't make his way down because he had plucked all the fruits on a tree(According to Sümi ancient belief, it is forbidden to pluck all the fruits on a tree). Slowly, he had no option but to transform himself into a Hornbill bird (Aghacho) and told Khauli to look out for him whenever she hears villagers talking about exquisite/strange looking bird flying in the air of a village. Grief-striken, Khauli went back to her husband's village. Days passed. One day as Khauli was grinding corn, she heard people talking about a rare bird flying about in the village. She remembered the promise(which Kivigho told him) and came out to see it too. Suddenly, a feather of that bird landed on her chest and she kept it with her. Night came and as she fell asleep, she met Kivigho (her lost love) in her dream. She asked him what would she do with the feather and Kivigho replied, "Let it be used by all generations as a symbol of my never ending love for you." To this very day, Sümi tribe/every tribe in Nagaland uses this Hornbill's feather(Aghachomihi) in the traditional head-gear, made of Bear's fur(Avabo).
