Hi! Ornithologist here. Kiwis lay such huge eggs because they're not only ratites, they're precocial. That means, the baby is completely independent once it hatches. The poor mom can't even eat for a few days before laying, because it's so huge! If I had to lay an egg the size of my entire body, I wouldn't want anything to do with it afterwards, either. She walks away, and the dad incubates the egg.

New Zealand is fascinating. The amount of large birds that once called New Zealand home, is absolutely astounding. Up until relatively recently, moas, and massive eagles roamed New Zealand. Now those birds (to name a few) are extinct. The closest living relative to the moa is actually the kiwi!

Kiwi’s are not in the same family as any of the other ratites- they are all apart of the paleognathae, which consists of 5 groups of flightless birds. This I called an infraclass, and aves (birds) are only split into two- this basically means that they are as related as a red necked grebe and a Eurasian tree sparrow… basically they are not even in the same order. Almost all over birds are in the infraclass neognathae. Here is how the scientific classifications work- Kingdom- Animalia Phylum- Chordata Class- Aves Infraclass- Palaeognathae Order- Apterygiformes Family- Apterygidae Genus- Apteryx Species- Rowi (1 of the 5 species) Subspecies- Family is general- genus is what the family is separated into- however some families only have one genus and some have multiple. Kiwi’s only have a single but Accipitridae has both sub families and different genus’s in those sub families.

The kiwi definitely had native predators in the past, but they were all wiped out when humans arrived. New Zealand's original ecosystem revolved around birds since there were no mammals other than bats. Predatory birds tend to have excellent eyesight, so prey animals adapted to blend into the environment, hide in bushes or burrow underground. The kiwi does all of these things, and is also nocturnal, meaning even fewer predators would be up around feeding time. And if all else fails, adult kiwi have a real nasty kick. The kiwi totally has anti-predator defences. It's just that they were meant to defend against avian predators. Against mammals, none of it works.
