The final stop of this little trip through the operettas/musicals of the late 1930s and early 1940s features Clara (or Klara) Tabody a virtually forgotten name...
She sings "Wenn die Zigeunergeige singt" (Wenn the gypsy violin sings) from "Die Perle von Tokay" (The pearl of Tokay) - composed by Fred Raymond...
Born in Hungary in 1915 she started her career at the Kiraly-Theatre in Budapest before coming to Germnay. From 1937 she performed at the Metropol Theatre in Berlin - most famousy in Fred Raymond's "Maske in Blau". She was considered unphotogenic and therefore she only made a few movies. Her best known pictures are "Maske in Blau" - an oppulent musical based on the music from the operetta and Akrobat Schööön (1943) opposite the famed clown Charlie Rivel. She then married and moved to Italy... She infrequently appeared on stage in the 1950s and died forgotten in Milan in 1986.
"Die Perle von Tokay" set in Hungary as the title suggests - premiered in 1941 and was considerable succes. A movie version was made in 1953....
The video features a picture of Clara Tabody as well as a Belgian magazine cover of march 1942 featuring Tabody. Furthermore it shows some other Hungarian film actresses who worked in Germany in the 1930s and 40s.
