Adding to Mike Boone's comment, I have found that enlarging the hole in tough material using the smallest steps possible helps. It minimizes the amount of material to remove. Use each drill bit in your set. Additionally locking down the material helps too. Do not move the material between drill bits, you'll have to re-center. That's big chatter potential. Use the shortest arbor extension possible. Have just enough room to insert material or swap out bits. Yah and sharp bits, oil 'n stuff. Your videos are great. Mistakes just make it real. Awesome blade. Love the concept.

I'm just so glad it's not just me who gets to that point where things go haywire and you have to go for a fix, of some kind. Glad you showed it. I feel a lot better now. And finish it by hand. Been there since I've gouged metal before on a grinder. And more than my share of tubing as pins too. lol Good vid! Honesty! That's money right there. The knife is awesome!

@@OUTDOORS55 We'll do Alex and once again thank you for showing us it's possible to make high quality knives at home without being a blacksmith. I'm a subscriber and I watch all your videos. Before I make my first attempt at making a knife I have to get a vice and a belt sander than make a forge the way you showed us. My biggest worry is getting good carbon steel here in Australia, but if I can't get good steel I'm going to use a basterd file. Thanks Alex.

Alex, I am a machinist/tool builder going on 40 years, A:- Slow down your 6-8 flute chamfer tool and "clamp" piece tight. B: Go to hardware store or machine shop and get a 3/8 shank or 1/2 " shank 3 or 4 flute plunge cutting endmill. Run at slowest speed you can. Also, for chamfering, you need to get a "spiral" type. This has one flute and does not chatter. I know we all work with what we have, but these tips will save you much heartache.. You do "OUSTANDING" work, especially with the tools I see in your videos. Worse comes to worse, Send me the blank and I will fix it for free and send it back. Keep up the good work. Respectfully, Joe M.

Thanks for the tips👍 Like you said, right now I’m working with what I have. My drill press’ Don’t run slow enough. They are both on the slowest pully and still way to fast. I probably won’t do a blade like this again. The hole doesn’t really serve a purpose on a fixed blade. Most of the holes I drill now are covered up by the handle😉 Thanks again my friend! Maybe one day I’ll get some proper tools😀

Im a machinist. A step drill works well with thin materials such as a knife blade. Also drill it undersize and then use a reamer. Reamers make a perfectly round sized holes. Drill your hole about 1/32" smaller then ream to size.

If you clamp the knife firmly to a piece of wood on top of the table of the press, that can help reduce chatter rather than cramping the knife straight to the table. Or, in general, get a proper drilling clamp, but that won’t work when drilling through a knife blade

It may be a bit late, like 2 years too late but there is a way to drill that hole a bit cleaner. My dad tought me that if i want to drill such hole and i know a drill bit will chatter - use an old flanel shirt and drill through that :) Just a little trick if you don't have many holes and you want them to be nice. When you center your work piece and you are ready to make your hole, put a piece of fabric between a drill and your part.
