I fully appreciate the engineering that has gone into that platen, but it’s definitely for established makers, with a strong customer base and business so you can roll it in and write it off! At $2700 bucks it’s the cost of a grinder (more in some cases). But again, I can definitely see why you and those that own one would love it. 👌👍👊

Nice fixture but what sacrilege to use slip gages as heel blocks on a clamp you must have plenty bucks to waste??

I buy tools for the purpose I need them for. It's not uncommon for me to buy a tool, some may consider expensive, knowing I'm going to modify it for my purposes. In the case of these gage blocks, they are an inexpensive set of toolroom quality blocks; plenty accurate for my purposes but, without an expensive certification.

Are your still happy with the hardcore platen? Have you changed to the newer Moen Platen instead?
@rangermadeknives

I do have the new Moen platen and it has some improvements over the previous version. That said, I run both of them side-by-side during classes and students get excellent results out of both.

Very cool tool, I have the jig and love it. I would love the platten at some point but $2800 is a tall hill to climb.

Can you use this as a regular platen to grind the initial bevels? Or do you just use it for finishing work like this? Awesome video bob. Still waiting on the full liner lock build
@rangermadeknives

You can grind the bevels start to finish. This just happened to be the blade I was working on when it was time to shoot this video. I don't think there will be a full linerlock build anytime soon. That would be a serious amount of work to shoot...unless you want to come be my full time videographer!

Nearly every student who has taken my Fine Folder class has bought the redesigned Moen Jig after using it on one knife. Nothing compares. I should do a video on the new jig!

@@rangermadeknives Absolutely! My grinds have gone from so-so to "How did you do that?" from my fellow knife makers. A tip I'll share is the high grit j weight ceramic belts I stumbled over at Red label abrasives. Now I can grind to 400 grit easily with the power of ceramic abrasives. I took a hint from you and do one side all the way, work through the grits, then flip and match the second side to the first, giving me a nice even grind on both sides. Game changing technique!

Yes, there is a fan that draws air through the platen body to keep carbide and belt cool.
