The best lightweight folder is the highly underrated Hogue Deka Magnacut, the 20cv is also amazing but not quite as light. It still amazes me that people still recommend the Bugout when the Deka is $40 cheaper, one of the best steels, way better fit and finish.

When I think of a summer knife, I think of lightweight to not load down light shorts, corrosion-resistant, inexpensive so I am not worried about sand in the pivot or replacing it if I lose it, and maybe fun colors like my summer watches. So many under $50 on the KnifeCenter website - Mini Hellx, Elementum, Mini Beluga, Mini Archaeo, Real Steel 3001, Kubey Royal Nest, Canary, Lander, Mini Pyrite, Mica, Rubik, Mini Dundee, Honey Badger medium flipper, etc. There are even loads of traditionals in cool summer colors.

For the simple inexpensive outdoor knife the Kabar Dozier is hard to beat. Even in AUS 8. I have all three even the discontinued harpoon blade. I have many expensive knives, but they still end up in the rotation. Especially the clip point with the cut out hole for opening. I’ve had them for over a decade and they have held up well. 🎸🔪

tbh i would honestly say that for an upgrade to the minimalist (knifecenter doesn’t carry this model but bladehq and chicago knife works carry it and CKW has it for $98) the brisa scara 60 is an awesome choice. it’s a 3 inch handle and a 2.4 inch blade and it uses rwl34 which is basically cpm154. it’s god a super thick handle so even though it’s only 3 fingers it’s a super hand filling grip.

EDIT: And you can never go wrong with the CRKT Minimalist. I own a ton of knives, and it's one of my favorites. Suuuuper light, great little size, most comfortable handle I've ever felt (much to my surprise), and you can get it in virtually any blade shape you could want. Can also be worn around the knife (I wear mine as a neckknive daily and don't even feel it at all, but that may be a lol annoying while jogging).

Hey DCA and crew! I have been a longtime fan and finally have a question. When you carry a fixed blade when going in to 'the wild', you often carry a backpack with you. Since the 'best' place to carry your knife is on your belt, why do so many knifesheaths (kydex-like) ride so high? It hinders using the belt buckle of your backpack. This is especially the case with larger multiday hike backpacks. Thanks!

Sand proof knife suggestion. It is on the crazy side, but from my experience it’s the most functional knife for the job… magnacut insingo inkosi. Keep it simple and just rock plain titanium, glass blasted if you’d like a cleaner look. It’s just the pivot and stand off you unscrew to take it apart, otherwise the sebenza who be goo because the Allen screw/ wrench head is the same size but there’s also no exposed washers to get debris in. But cheaper idea would be the giant mouse ace nimbus. Or spydie chef/ salt series with compression lock, just spray it out and call it good.

Hey DCA, Ive never bothered to buy any crossbar locking knife before because of yhe famed unreliability of omega springs and how your lock simply wont work if they break. However, the new Benchmade PSK solves my main issue related to them, but i cant afford such an expensive knife. Are there any other similar knives with a secondary lock? Any company, any materials, im just looking for some options. Also, bonus points. I finally was able to get the Real Steel Pathfinder Folder in natural micarta and scandi grind. After your review on it I needed it. I’m a sucker for micarta and a scandi 14c is very rare on a folder. This knife is scary sharp, it’s as sharp as my Rockstead, bark river, microtechs and any other knife of not sharper, you mentioned the micarta as being contoured, unfortunately they are mostly flat, that’s my only complaint about the knife, I wish they were more contoured. I plan to put a secondary convex to protect the edge from chipping under the batoning and wood work it will be subjected to. Thanks for the recommendation, this is probably the 12th knife I’ve purchased from Knifecenter due to your showing of it. Thanks again. As you may, or may not, know 'machetes' is a wide knife category with many sizes & blade shapes. Asking for a 'machete' is a bit like asking for a 'folding knife'. I personally like Condor machetes (thanks to Joe Flowers aka the machete man). I have a Condor Jungolo & Mountain Pass - both of which I love & use reasonably regularly. Not really replacements for knives though. How big do you need the machete to be? Would a large fixed blade be able to do the job? I only ask as this might give you more steel choices. Most machetes are in carbon steel for toughness but also meaning poor corrosion resistance & reasonably poor edge retention. Living in Florida corrosion resistance will be an issue. Let's see what DCA recommends.

There seems to be a lot of discussion around proper heat treat by steel type, knife thickness, blade grind. Considering you (David) are a maker/designer and all your knowledge can you get into the weeds a bit with your views on this? I think you have a very neutral stance on things and can bring a great voice to this debate. I'll give an example... I'm gonna need some therapy or something as I really like the knife...... More seriously - if you're going on/near water for more than a few days please get a kydex sheath. On a multi-week trip the leather's going to get wet - possibly a lot. There's a some chance the leather may start to rot but most certainly it will become soft - it will deform, you will lose retention & in a worst case the stitching may start to pop. Why all the hate on Benchmade knives? Never had ANY problem with a benchmade. Builds are great, occasional military discounts (BladeHQ, for example), their awesome warranties. I will admit the prices are rough, but that's the only thing I can think of. Maybe I'm just too new to knives, but I would love to hear your input.
@realbroggo
Ай бұрын
Welcome to the knife community! There's a lot of history behind the hate that Benchmade seems to attract. In even trying to answer this I'm probably going to draw some heat myself (and I don't propose to know it all!). But let's stay calm. As a quick backstory, Benchmade appeared on the knife scene some 30 years ago. They actually started out selling balisongs (hence the butterfly logo) & subsequently expanded. They quickly developed a reputation for their designs & quality (inc. warranties) esp. in the tactical arena. They designed the Axis lock (aka crossbar lock) which since the patent expired in 2018 many makers have started to use because of how good it is. Some of their designs are mainstays of the knife world - Griptilian, Osborne, Bugout and more. Now for the hate. In summary, over the years Benchmade customers & knife enthusiasts generally feel that Benchmade is taking advantage of them by more recently offering unexciting designs, poor material choices, below expected quality & most importantly ridiculously high prices/poor value. Whether or not these issues are true or just perception will depend on who you talk to! Once you've been in the knife community for a while and experienced products from various makers you will be able to make up your own mind. Do I think Benchmade offer value for money - no - but that's just me. While as you might expect these thing do annoy enthusiasts & collectors alike - especially the pricing - there is something really important here. No one is making anyone buy Benchmade! If you like a Benchmade knife and it meets your requirements and you're happy to pay the price - go for it and enjoy it. When you buy a knife the only person you need to satisfy is yourself. Have a great day.

@realbroggo A very good writeup, but I would issue just one clarification. Benchmade did not design the AXIS Lock. It was designed by custom makers Bill McHenry and Jason Williams, and was exclusively licensed to Benchmade, making its debut on the original 710 folder. Well done mate! -DCA

Hi DCA! The most underrated small fix blade ever: Civivi Midwatch. A truly do-everything knife that’s good for hunting, food-prep, self defense, underwater, and general edc. Agree?

i wouldn’t rly call that small. it has almost a 3.5 inch blade, that’s more like a smaller medium size fixed blade. it’s similar in size to my bradford guardian 3.5, which while i am able to edc fairly well is definitely not a small knife. hell even my brisa bobtail isn’t exactly a small knife.

@@acid6urns true it’s not small enough to disappear in the pocket. I do clip it in my thigh pocket though. Because how thin the handle is, it’s more comfortable against my thigh than say a guardian 3.5

Beach guy: a Reate Exo maybe? Just run water through the sliding construction. Could be an idea. Or a butterfly knife for nice accessibility.

Hi DCA, Thomas, Seth and the Comment Section. My friend has a Buck 110 and he loves it. It is going to be his birthday soon. I want to buy him a Kwik Thumb stud that allows him to one hand open that knife. (He already cut his thumb trying without them). I would like to get something for myself as well. Could someone recommend me a budget knife that I can both front flip and reverse flick (ideally via fuller). Budget is under $100, I have eyes on the Sencut Bronte, but I want to know if there are more options. I know there is the CJRB Ekko but that is not for me. Thanks a lot.

Why don’t the makers pull a scotch caramel coloring thing and put some dark red into ultem so it doesn’t look like pee or apple juice but more amber, is that even possible? I don’t know what ultem is in process

Does KnifeCenter have lighter colored Shirts? Many knifes have dark handles, many even dark green, and they are sometimes hard to see in front of a dark green shirt!
