I feel like men like Shad don't understand why a lot of young girls want to be princesses. It's not because they want to be helpless and stuck in a tower. It's more about being rich enough to afford all these nice clothes and having a certain amount of authority and power. Even the being saved element has a bit this in it because a princess is important enough to be defended against harm more than a peasant woman. It is a feminine appropriate power fantasy in a world were other power fantasies for girls are looked down on and not allowed. Young girls do not want to be princesses solely to be the helpless damsel to make boys feel like heroes. They want to be princesses because they want to be rich and important. The pretty dresses are part of the being rich part. Edit: I noticed I typed out feminism because of auto correct when I meant feminine. It is fixed now.

Yep he/them cannot see the perspective differing from their own, the female side of the knight and princess dynamic. They confuse their perspective for hers, thinking her desire begins and ends at the saving, when for women it extends into the "being valued" just as the knight side isn't about the slaying of the dragon, it's REALLY about the glory and admiration/value afterwards. In both ways, they are stopping their analysis early and confusing the act for the accomplishment. (Which I theorize means they are still "questing" for the act, and have not lived the glory of accomplishment. Kind of sad but also not really their fault that their conservative culture set them up to seek a value that is so outdated, opportunities to enact that value are incredibly rare. Plus the patriarchal society assumptions that only certain, "worthy" men get to DO the act, and therefore the act itself is rarified as is the reward they all worship. It's literally the opposite of an egalitarian worldview, trying to withhold and throttle universal happiness + peace to dole it out only for "good boy" behaviour. These men (and women) are starved then thrown a scrap and told it's a feast, and they have to thank their abusers for the privilege. Extremely disheartening that they haven't realized they are being abused and instead dream of being the abuser. This is what we get when we worship the heros journey and totally disregard the following arcs of the king and mage, not to mention freezing women in the flat Maiden arc forever.

Given Shad’s obsession with knighthood and his presumption to know what women want better than they do themselves, I’m reminded of one of my favourite Arthurian stories, “The Tale of the Loathsome Maiden”. Sir Gawain is riding through the woods when he comes to a bridge guarded by a Black Knight (sound familiar?) who challenges him to a duel and easily bests him, but withholds the final blow. He tells Gawain that he’ll be back in a year to give him that final blow, unless he can tell him the one thing every woman wants the most. Gawain goes on his way and asks every woman he meets what she wants the most, but they each give him a different answer. Finally on the last day of the year he meets a hideous old hag, who says she’ll tell him the answer to the Black Knight’s riddle if he’ll agree to marry her the next day. Not seeing any other option Gawain agrees, and she tells him that what every woman wants most is to decide for herself what she wants without a man deciding for her. The next day the Black Knight returns and Gawain gives him his answer, and he congratulates Gawain and lets him go. But before he does he says, “You know the answer to the riddle, but do you truly understand it?” That evening Gawain goes reluctantly to his wedding with the horrible hag, but when they retire to their bedchamber and she removes her wedding veil, he’s surprised to discover that she’s really beautiful underneath it. She tells him she was cursed by the Black Knight when she refused to marry him, so that she’s beautiful half the day and ugly the other half, and that the curse can only be broken by a man who truly understands the answer to the Black Knight’s riddle. She asks Gawain if he would rather she was beautiful at night when they’re together, or by day when other people will see her. But Gawain, finally understanding the answer to the riddle, asks her what she wants. The curse is broken and the maiden becomes beautiful permanently, and she and Gawain live happily together. The funny thing is, this story is hundreds of years old, but if it was written today Shad would say it was “woke”.

Peach was living in the Mushroom Kingdom for years and Mario was new there, of course she had more experience. The whole point of her is that she is Mario's guide and the adventure is one where both have to watch each other backs and defeat Bowser and there is nothing wrong with that.
@zericle1
Жыл бұрын
Exactly, and it's shown that Mario has to learn a lot to get used to the new world he's in. What's ironic too is that in the final confrontation in the movie, Mario and Luigi are the ones who take down Bowser and Peach literally says that they're heroes. They literally save Peach from Bowser. But Mario wouldn't have gotten to where he did without Peach. In my opinion, watching the movie I felt like the obvious main character was Mario, and Peach seemed like a major supporting character, so I don't get why some people were so pissed off. Like, Mario is still the main character and nothing's really changed that much aside from Peach getting more characterization, which I believe is a good thing.

The funniest moment to me is Shad in the clip about how Disney is trying to raise your kids... "To fight back, teach your kids to love who they are..." Then he realizes how that is exactly what Disney is doing and immediately tries to course correct with, "teach boys to love being boys and girls to love being girls." I cannot get over the idea of people being upset that the Mario movie featured power-ups. It's, like, the most iconic part of the games. Shad on someone else's live stream - why people invite him on is anyone's guess, he brings nothing and talks over people, I guess maybe it is the 'funny accent'... go figure - was talking about the quality of some of the movies only 10 years ago compared to today. Or something. He claimed he often would let his three year old watch dvd/BluRays to keep him occupied and his son now starts picking out the Nolan Batman movies by preference. Okay: One - You babysit your three year old son by getting him to watch movies? Two - You are leaving your three year old son with a movie that is rated as M (Mature) in Australia? Mature is the highest rating before you get into legal restrictions. What they are saying is "We can't stop you from letting a minor watch this, but we REALLY don't think you should let them." Now Shad, cause Shad knows best, laughs it up as "Look at my son, three years old and already a Batman fan!" while I hear this same story and think "Wait, you are self employed and work from home and you are NOT SPENDING TIME WITH YOUR SON?! What sort of can't are you?" Shad is... different...

Whats both pathetic and sad about Shad, is that when i found him a while back he presented himself as the guy who likes sword but is breaking the stereotypes associated with these dudes. Speaks volumes that Jack never said a single insult directed towards Shad's character in his original video. Whereas Shad went crazy with 2 hours of uncalled for personal attacks. Even all the "insults" Jack said to Shad in this video were either requoting Shad's insults in an ironic way to accuse Shad of all the things Shad was accusing Jack of. I think a lot of those were just regular insults. I don't think them being pointed jokes makes them less of an insult. If it's intended to "trigger" shad, which I agree it is, that makes it an insult. See 37:55 "like I'm obligated to be respectful of someone". I don't think he feels obligated to be respectful towards shad. Comparing their character feels a little like it's missing the point. The point is shad doesn't have an argument, his use of disrespect over serious arguments is just evidence of that. Jack's disrespect in return serves the same catharsis for his audience (us) as shad's disrespect does for shad's audience. I don't think there's any need to get up on a high horse about Jack's character. I can appreciate the superiority of Jack's argument while acknowledging a parity in creative shit flinging.

"The core of the Mario story is the damsel in distress. ... Most guys, especially young boys and everything like that, they're more interested in saving the pretty princess." So, I am "most guys," and the first time I played SMB when I was a kid, I had finally beaten bowser for the first time, and was greeted by Toad saying the princess was in another castle. My reaction was: "What princess? There's a princess? Why do I care?" The reality is that if a game is fun, the story really doesn't matter. In film, not every story needs to play out exactly the same way; that would be boring. You can have movies where the hero saves the princess and they may be good or bad, and you can have movies that do other things too.

People like him believe that the "woke mind virus" claimed Hollywood recently and is destroying our "traditional values" in a giant conspiracy known as "culture war", but cirticism they levy against those movies have been made since the dawn of cinematography. It's true that Hollywood has changed and progressed since the days when blackface was ok in movies, but the whole argument of "They're just trying to push their liberal agenda in my enertainment!" has always been there and was just as bad then as it is now. This so called "culture war" is a process that has been constantly happening throughout centuries as societies and societal norms changed and continue to change. He's treating Mario like he's Luke Skywalker when he's not. Mario is Mickey Mouse, he's Popeye the Sailor Man, he's a goofy cartoon character in a slapstick routine. Mario was never meant to be a cool knight on a quest, he was deliberately modeled after old school cartoon protagonists. A character like Mickey mouse isn't cool or competent, he gets flattened and burned and beat but he always bounces back and tries his hardest to get the girl. A character like Popeye is more tough and strong but even he suffers ludicrous injuries when competing against Bluto. Popeye also iconically has his own power up in the form of spinach which gives the incredible strength needed to beat Bluto and save Olive Oyle. In the games, Mario can die in all sorts wacky ways but is able to pop back up and try again and the games are built around using any wild trick you can pull off to reachcthe goal. Shad is so obsessed with this Joseph Campbell valiant hero bullshit that he can't understand what a fucking cartoon is.

Well, most people use that term wrong. It's actually a very specific form of bad writing characterized by authors developing deeply unhealthy attitudes towards their characters due to using them as coping mechanisms. Usually when people try explain what a Mary Sue is they just end up describing individual symptoms, not the considerably more troubling underlying problem. Now, I haven't read Shad's book and I don't plan to, but from what I've heard it may actually be a legit case. It sure sounds like some hardcore old school Mary Sueing. Also, Jude: "Gary Stu" in an entirely superfluous term invented by people who were, for some reason, apparently uncomfortable using a female name for a phenomenon that has nothing to do with the gender of the character. There's really no important distinction between a male and female Mary Sue, so the former does not need it's own special label. At the very least, they're completely interchangeable.
