Oh man do I miss those days when TV was TV ... good times all around in the 70’s & 80’s The fact they had to keep rebranding the opening was a bad sign back then in order to keep up with those of us that were growing up as the main audience and eventually lost us as we all moved on. But those really were our best of times and I would not trade them for anything. These are our memories and time machine from a much better time in life when we were young and full of vibrance… I graduated in 82 and I remember it all very well. We were lucky to live in the 70’s and 80’s . They really were the best decades for my generation. America was in a much better place back then and jobs were all over, even in a small farm town I lived in. We had textiles, factories and two large malls, a small country store up town, small ice cream and sandwich shop and every weekend the farmers would sell their goods.. We never had shootings. I do remember however, the Tylenol scare and it was a HUGE thing and it started the seal everything movement. We had great TV and movies. Our family got together for dinner every night and had a huge feast on Sundays. We waited to watch shows that came on because we did not have VCR’s and DVD’s were not invited yet. Our mother would require us to call her from the pay phone before and after the move at the mall and we would go to the arcade room and deposit quarters to play a game. We got our soda from glass bottles before cans became popular and returned them to get a nickel back. We played outside, went on a lot of great picnics and went swimming all the time and we went camping whenever possible. We did not have air conditioning so we went to sleep on those hot summer nights with the windows open and we just dealt with it. We never had to wear helmets and padding to ride our bikes and we climbed tress and made forts in the forest and we turned out just fine. Yes sir! I would go back and do it again if I could. We were very lucky to have lived then. It truly was a much better time not only for me, but for our country. My first job was at a mall working for McDonald’s and then the Gap. My generation has seen so much from technology advancements to all manner of disasters. Every time you turned the TV on back then you would see commercials for, made in America! or the words (Made in the USA)!. it really was about our country! Things were not at all instant because we did not have the technology back then m we even had to wait for popcorn on the stove (Jeffy pop) and we waited for the feature night of the week movies to come on the networks. But then unfortunately greed took over when Kmart came into play followed by Walmart and nothing but ‘made in China’. It all went down hill then. Here we are today in 2023 where the networks are openly at each other‘s throat’s and the country is divided not to mention morals and values have gone straight to hell. I’m actually glad I grew up during that time. I have very fond memories of it all from holidays, season changes and wonderful summer vacations. The kids today hide behind a machine all day long and Alec Baldwin is going to jail. It’s so sad what has happened to humanity. It’s disgraceful what’s happening to our country and our government. I feel sorry for the new generation of kids it’s just terrible. God bless us all!

Ya know, it was something to look forward to. Every week on Thursday night 🌉 we had it for that hour and then it was over until the following week. Nowadays you can watch what ever you want when ever you want. No build up. No excitement. No talking about last 🌃 nights episode. It's too bad really. I just watch all the episodes on youtube. These were the days when opening credits and theme music were as important as the show itself. This is fantastic. Many of us looked forward to it as much as the show that followed. It was brilliant to juxtapose the characters of Abby and Valene deep in contemplation towards the end of the opening sequence. There was nothing "artsy" or abstract about opening credits such as this. Rather than cater to the status quo (politically correct horseshite), these scenes recreated real human events, albeit quite dramatized, as escapist entertainment should. I never enjoyed television shows after the 1980s, and miss those evenings in the parlor watching TV with my mother, brothers, and sisters, sitting on the carpeted floor around the sofa.

@@jankypop-a-matic58 Also posting from the UK here and can give you a rough broadcast history of Knots in the UK. After a slow start where the show struggled in the ratings in the early 80's, the show was pulled from it's regular 10pm Friday night primetime slot and was not reintroduced until 1986. When it did return, it was as a slot filler in the afternoon's. However the popularity of the Ciji storyline followed by Wolfbridge and Val's babies in the following years ensured a cult following and it's future was assured. In 1989 when the 7th season was purchased, the BBC bought the rights to all outstanding episodes available until that point meaning Seasons 7 to 10 aired continuously with no summer hiatus. Likewise, seasons 11 through to 13 aired in the same way. In the summer of 1991 just as Laura was breathing her last, the show was undergoing tons of interruptions due to a heavy summer of sport forcing the fans to bombard the BBC in their thousands angry at the scheduling. The BBC changed the airtime to Mondays where it remained through to the end of it's run in 1996. However UK Gold (a new cable broadcaster) also purchased the rights to the series in 1994 and aired all 14 seasons in syndicated form 5 days per week meaning they broadcast the series finale 6 months ahead of the BBC! Overall, Knots Landing has aired 5 complete runs in the UK between 1980 and 2017. One on the BBC between 1980 and 1996, two on UK Gold between 1994 and 2001 and two on CBS Drama between 2014 and 2017. The Block Party aired twice in 1995 and 2001 while Back to the Cul De Sac also aired twice on a separate network. Hardcore fans complain about the treatment of the series in the UK and the fact it was relegated to afternoon TV. However nowadays, virtually all foreign imports air either on daytime or primetime on a minor network. Personally, I think we're very lucky to have been given the opportunity to watch all 344 episodes five times over.

@@WillMeganFan read your post with keen interest,, based in the U.K. myself and Knots was my favourite show of the prime time USA soaps and I’d still call it my my favourite show of all time,, I was only 9 in 1986 when it started its life as a daytime soap, however I’d had surgery a few days before it started up as a daytime soap and was off school for the rest of the calendar year,, I was sent to my nans as both by parents worked and it was sat with her I was drawn into the show,, when I went back she’d record it on her machine and we would watch it together,,, so many happy memories I often wondered why Knots didn’t work as a prime time show here in the U.K.? The conclusion I have drawn is Knots was a more realistic soap and in the U.K. we had staples such as Coronation Street that dealt with “real life”, coupled with the fact we were hooked on Dallas which was full of glitz and glamour,,, did Knots fall between two stools for U.K. tastes? I remember vividly the letter writing campaign to the BBC to stop messing around with scheduling and a sense of shock by the corporation at how many passionate fans it had. I was so disappointed in September 1992 when we reached the end of season 10 the BBC pulled the show for a year,, I’m guessing they didn’t have the rights to any more shows at that point,, did they have an eye on what was happening to the show in the USA at that point,, and wondered if it was nearing its end there? Did they work out the remaining episodes would be cheaper to buy once the show had gone off the air? Once the show was started from scratch I watched the episodes I was too young to remember and loved the daily fix of Knots through to then end,, from memory the final show on U.K. Gold was July 1995?

@@lotuspoint Sorry I'm just seeing your reply here therefore apologies it's taken 4 months to respond. Will try and answer a few of your questions. Firstly, the BBC cancelled the series about two thirds of the way through Season 3 in 1983 because no one was watching. This was the year after Sid died and the series was dying in America at this point too - hovering around the Top 50 rather than the top 30. My guess (like you) was that people had their fill of realism from UK soaps and looked to U.S dramas for escapism which Knots did not provide. As for the 1992 shutdown, it was purely because they had showed all the episodes that they had purchased back in 1989 and had run out of installments to show. When the Season 10 finale aired in September 1992, they announced during the end credits that a new series would air in January however it was during this period when the series' cancellation was announced in the states so like you, I believe this affected their decision somewhat and they stalled until after the May 93 finale before buying up all the remaining episodes. Whether or not cost was a factor, I don't know. However I was glad they did stall because once I heard the show was ending, I was in no hurry to get through the outstanding seasons. Ironically, the BBC were never more loyal to the show than they were during this era - churning out 4 seasons in just over 2 years. Have to say it's been fun reminiscing about old viewing habits with another Knots fan. There has never been another series like it and there never will be again.

They then screened it once a week on Thursday evenings at 9 or 9:30pm until the series ended..as far as l can remember they didn't take breaks in between seasons so we ended up years ahead of the BBC episodes by the time it finished on RTE. This show had one of the best story-lines of any drama daytime or evening; Gary's current love interest faked a trip to San Fran. hooked up with a guy, gave him something that made him pass out then flew back to LA to force Val to commit suicide. She then flew back to S.F. in time for the guy she had drugged to wake up the next morning. Val didn't die from the pills she was made to swallow but insisted this woman had made her do it. Several episodes followed where Val was trying to convince everyone the woman had done that to her.
