I’m guessing this is why John Powell has every orchestral library out there for his demo tracks. John Powell’s demo videos are absolutely nuts nuts nuts.

Really interesting to see and hear the comparisons - the video is very well done! Consider raising the volume from Cubase a bit to make it possible to listen on loud volume without the speech being too loud :)

Thank you so much for such a detailed information about OPUS in this series. I bought Spitfire BBCSO PRO and Orchestra OPUS almost at the same time in a blackfriday deal (I already had BBCSO Core and Hollywood Orchestra Gold). And you know, Hollywood Opus was kind of abandoned. After watching your videos I reinstalled it entirely and added it to my template.

Another wonderful tutorial! I'm almost done with my first detailed orchestral project, Barber's First Essay, with EWHO Diamond. You're so right about the legato in Play. It's a trick to make some of them work. I've just crossgraded to Opus and the way you're teaching this is perfect for someone with Play experience.

Surprised that no one has commented yet - the difference in the volume of your voice versus some of the patches is "quite a bit different" in some instances - I find myself constantly reaching for the volume knob......otherwise a good view

For around 200 a year it is a pretty damn good idea to have it. I just downloaded the whole entire database of sounds which does come out to over 2TB. None of my synths whether they are vst or hardware even come close to the quality and realism of acoustic sounds. The synths I own that have acoustic capabilities are the Roland Jupiter 80, and the Roland Fantom (2019). I understand that this all sample based, but I now have a library of so many premium sounds that none of my hardware synths will ever be able to handle. For such a great price to pay and use it for a whole year.

Your first two videos are extremely well done (I haven’t seen the third one yet but expect more of the same quality). Very clear, honest, good use of examples, and you kept things interesting all the way through. With the East West sale this week upgrade is pretty much a no brainer as all of the things that bugged me sonically and in the workflow of Hollywood Orchestra have been addressed here. Thanks!

If the sound had vibrato control, you control the volume with the expression, which is cc11. The modwheel then controls the vibrato, do you don't hear any difference in volume even you move this control. This can be changed in the play tab. Change expression to 1 instead of 11.

I like this review and if I hadn’t bought it a week ago I would do it now. I watched also your older videos on Hollywood Strings and I learned something. But there is something you didn’t mentioned in detail … Divisi Instruments (Violins, Celli, Basses). How to use them properly? My understanding of “Divisi” is, that the instrument is split to two parts and so reduce polyphony (8 Violins become 2 x 4 Violins) but the EW Divisi instruments have only closed mics… so how do I use them? There seems to be something I’m missing. ps. This is my first Orchestra Library and I still have to learn a lot

When you play the 2 trombones exp -> 2 tb sus max, what you hear are 6 trombones, not 2. This is because you play three notes (each having 2 trombones audible). That sounds quite different, than actual 2 bones

@@SecondTierSound yes, i said "you", but my post was geared towards others watching the video, and to give them information on how samples work. I see many play chords with a multi instrument patch, often people (not you) think that what they hear are then 3 or 4 instruments together, but they forget it's way more. (especially with strings, it can grow to a humongous number of players audible, e.g. 16 first violin one players patch.. x3 = 48 players just for first violins, do a 4 note chords and its bigger even)

Honestly it is not completely true. Recorded sounds does not work as in real life. If you make 7 notes chord with solo violin it wont sound as ensemble playing. Same for something like solo horn. Or trombone.

about the trombone legato i thought the libraries work like complementary ? When i download the opus edition it starts automatically to download the old version . And i see a legato in the play version. I am not sure how this sync of old and new works. Thx for the tutorial and review, really good. I need someone who tests for me and bring all together in a synthesis, otherwise i begin a new piece for every new sound i play .... I had before an issue finding the basic sounds quickly and load all quickly so this is why i loved the Goliath orchestra haha

I'm sorry you have that experience. Every computer and DAW had their issues. Opus is not without faults but it definitely works better than play. Personally I have no real problem with it, but I do find the orchestrator unstable att times. Otherwise it is faster then play, has useful tools that make it easier to work with, and sounds better with less artifacts. I also think that one can still use play and get the same results out of the libraries, discounting the benefits of the upgrade.

Thanks for the video. I feel vindicated by not upgrading. I bought the whole Diamond years ago only to learn than someone who owns even ONE section of the GOLD version get's the same Opus upgrade deal that I do. So on principle, EW can suck it. I may never buy anything from them again if that's how they treat OG customers who invested more.

The Diamond is still great. No need to upgrade really if you're happy with the library.
