Chaotix does capture some of the magic of Sonic CD with its weird level design, lush backgrounds, and great music. Also worth noting is the fact that the lighting of the levels changes with the time of day, and that the enemies are level-specific. An enjoyable, if flawed, experience.

I was one of the crazy people who preordered a 32X, and I picked up Chaotix as soon as it was released. It definitely didn't leave a positive first impression but for one point: the music. I adored the soundtrack right off and kept starting new games just to play along to Door Into Summer. Still my favorite soundtrack from a Sonic game, and it's a Sonic game that almost doesn't even feature Sonic at all!

The graphics definitely were bright and colorful but not really next gen. I kinda always wished this and Sonic CD had been included in Sonic Jam, with lock on added to this, CD, and Sonic 1, but maybe that'll happen one day with Origins... We can dream. I managed to get this for $5 from a school bully waaay back in 1997. I still have it in my collection. I could never understand the localized story summaries as a kid. Years later, I found out the story is more connected to the lore from Sonic 3 & Knuckles in the Japanese manual (Sonic 3's story ties into Sonic Adventure too in the Japanese manual). When the Dead Egg crashed into Angel Island, it pushed it back into the ocean bedrock. And after Eggman's defeat at the end of Sonic 3 & Knuckles, the Master Emerald was returned and it took the the skies again. But when it did, the energy of the Master Emerald caused bits of the bedrock the Angel Island touched to become energized with Emerald energy and it took flight as well...hovering underneath Angel Island. It isn't called Carnival Island. It's called Newtrogic Zone(?). I always wondered why the late word was plastered underneath each level splash screen. Outside that, I never understood the hate it received. I love this game.

I thought the Music was great and the graphics were good enough for the hardware it was on. You gotta appreciate that the team made this probably knowing that the 32X was gonna fail regardless. The the tether gameplay mechanics took some getting used to, but they were good for a change of pace. Trying to get all Six Rings can be difficult. Overall, it was a good reason to get a 32X if you are a true Sonic fan and it would have been nice if Sega included this game in the many Sonic compilations they made over the years.

I liked the game overall, but the game save doesnt allow replayability. You need to start a new game and still have to careful to get to the Special Stage and get the Choas Rings. I also wish they had kept the Japanese story - I never knew what "Newtrogic High Zone" meant until I learned of a Japanese story. I wish the game had been put on the Sonic Gems collection (GCN) - and it seems like it was going to be with Choatix material in the museum.

I've always wanted to play this game, but for some reason I can't bring myself to finish it via emulation. I didn't even know there was a save option! It's cool that they included such a feature, because those special stages honestly seem kind of daunting. Also, SLX, if you see this, what would you think of doing a video (or videos) discussing how some of the games on Saturn and 32X might have been different if they were released for the opposing system? When I ask this, I mean things like for example how this game might have fared if it wound up releasing on the Saturn, and what tweaks the Saturn could have brought to the table to change things up. What could a 32X release of Daytona USA have looked like? Obviously it would be EXTREMELY paired back, but maybe there are some technical cheats they could have used to jerryrig a primitive version of the game to run on the system? How about Ahstal? I'm curious to hear what you would have to say in a video like that! ^^
@MaxAbramson3
Жыл бұрын
I've thought a lot about how to do Daytona USA on just the Sega CD, and by prerendering graphics, you could stream a lot of scenery across and update most of the game at 60fps. Using a 4MB RAM card, the whole stage could be pushed in ahead of time, and you might see better results from that setup than the 32X combo.

I think the 32x is amazing and was a good idea but like the sega CD it came LATE., the 16 bit systems also came a little late because the CD-Rom multimedia technology came up since the late 80s on PCs and remember, the PC engine already released the CD Rom rom at the same time the Megadrive was released in 1989; the main problem with add-ons is that people always buy the cheaper solution., i don´t know how well the xbox one x and ps4 did for example., but the things the 32x added were very impressive but late in comparison to what the saturn and ps1 were bringing., the 32x and the SVP chip were better than the FX chip and the mode 7 on the snes for example,
@MaxAbramson3

Although I loved the 32X, there was really nothing offered to us as Sega enthusiasts that clearly exceeded what the Sega CD could do already. IMO, what killed SEGA was the demand that we fork over ANOTHER $200 on top of the $500 for the Sega CD combo to get almost no graphical nor 3D improvement and worse sound. Put that money into making better games for the Sega CD and use that as the bargain model until they could get the Saturn price down below $200.

But I have issues with it: the Heavy and Bomb partners are annoying, the bonus stages aren't necessary, the bosses are way too easy and it's biggest sin it's the really bland and repetitive level desing. But i'll admit this game has a charm that other games lack, it truly feels like a game lost in time, something too wacky and excentric that's worth playing just for that (at least for me). If you just stop thinking of it as a traditional Sonic title and think of it more as a platforming objective based game with Knuckles in it, you'll have so much more fun. I like it now too. I initially wished there were more bosses and more levels were like the Speed Slider stage (it's even advertised on the box and can see why) it's the most fun stage in the game and has the perfect balance. Feels the most like a trad Sonic stage! But over time I couldn't help but appreciate this game. It's just gorgeous to look at for one. I adore the 16 & 32-bit aesthetic and it's just satisfying to control and play. I like the Nintendo mini-game-built-into-a-mechanic vibe with the level/character select. Something I initially hated but grew to appreciate. It's just different enough to set itself apart from Sonic yet just Sonic enough to feel at home. I have super fond memories of this game. At the time, and perhaps even still, this is the best co-op 2 player Sonic game. You went from being Tails being left behind and being useless, to actually being equally as important as the other player. For a sibling who was usually Tails, this was a huge deal. I tend to find most people who poo all over this game only play single player, despite the game being clearly designed with 2 players. So they're not getting the full experience. I think generally, when a game is obscure, it's easier for narratives to spend. Say if a big KZitemr says the game sucks, it's easier for people to just take their word for it and the game gets a reputation of being bad. Sega should just re-release the game. They've re-released garbage like Sonic Blast on the Game Gear so I doubt quality has anything to do with it.

I picked up a 32x probably around in 2015 and put the library on the everdrive and ended up spending way more time on this game than I thought I would. It was a fun night playing through this and I find myself coming back to it. Keep up on the 32x reviews. They are a welcome addition in my opinion.

I was one of the few 32x owners back them and of course I bought this game. It was certainly not perfect, but I played it to no end, and loved it. I still listen to it's music on my way to work.

Not a great game but I also think it's not a bad game. It's unique in ways and for the most part, I still had fun with it, even though it's lacking a little of what the Sonic Genesis titles had (Or even Sonic CD for that matter, in my opinion). It's an odd one and one that surprisingly still hasn't been ported anywhere. Fun fact: The story in Knuckles Chaotix varies between the Japanese and Western releases. The Japanese version has Eggman (Robotnik) finding this new island and creating Newtrogic High Zone as a base and harnessing the energy of the Chaos Rings to make Dark Rings that power his robots on the island.

The best thing about it was the new characters. They were all pretty dope, I would have preferred to just play them solo instead of being banded with another character though.

Chaotix was a fun adventure, and I’m surprised to hear about the reviews. I do think, other than for the colors and 3D stages, this could have easily been a Genesis title - and it disappoints me when Sega ignores this title in its rereleases. Definitely hope you do more 32X coverage - I know my faves are lame, but I’d like to know your thoughts on titles I am curious about like Tempo and Kilibri…

The sprite scaling was the main effect of the 32X. Genesis wouldn't have been able to do it as smoothly or with as many sprites.

@@BurritoKingdom I think the 32x did sprite scaling better than the Playstation did early on, if it's fair to judge the 32x Prototype of Rayman to the PS1 version.

It boggles the mind that Sega never actually re-released this game in any capacity, outside of GameTap in 2006. This game could become major news and draw a lot more interest in it if Sega were to commission it to be rereleased.

@@gordonshumway7465 sorry but Virtua Fighter was awesome on it. I had so much playing that game. Kolibri looked awesome and so did Virtua Racing. I even had a fun time with WWF Arcade. I tried collecting all the 32X games when they were on clearance, sad I never got the Spider-Man game .

@@wolffactor56 I'm not a fighting game fan, but that VF does look good. That, spider-man and whatever the expensive baseball game is are the 3 games I never got. Current prices are insane, but if you got in cheap back in the 90's or early 2000's there were plenty of fun titles. Some of the best home ports of MK2 and NBA Jam TE at the time as well. Star Wars Arcade is another good one.

@@gordonshumway7465 shoot I had RBI Baseball 95 and Butterbean Boxing, both were fun. I don’t think I ever saw World Series Baseball in the wild. Yeah I picked up my whole collection in 1996-1998 and forgot about collecting it after I got my Dreamcast. Glad you had a fun time with it too. Yes MK2 was fun and glad to hear NBA Jam TE was fun (owned genesis version). Side note I could never get past Star Wars Arcade second level as a kid.

There is actually plenty of good reasons to play 32x. There is quite a few good games. Personally I replay like Virtua Racing and Virtua Fighter on it. Virtua racing has exclusive tracks that haven’t been ported. tempo was fun, and it has the better home version of NBA jam. Star Wars arcade was fun. I liked Tempo. And I know everyone likes to hate BC racers, but I thought it was good, and if you wanted practically arcade perfect after burner or Space Harrier.

Would love more 32X reviews! As a kid in the 90s I was so excited for the 32X and Chaotix when I discovered a demo of it at a Media Play store. In the moment I thought it was the next big thing, I had to have only been about 8 or 9 at the time. Wow did it fail fast!

One thing to note about playing this game is that getting into the habit of carrying your partner as a projectile and double jump (the hold button did weird shit with the throw) would basically allow you to fly. It was great fun to Speedrun once you learned how to utterly break the rushed physics that dictated the tether.
@Tybis

I think that the randomized characters and level order could have potentially been pretty interesting if it were done better. The main thing that Chaotix is missing is interesting level design. In Sonic 3, nearly every zone had cool setpiece moments, but Chaotix's levels just feel like a series of mazes. I've spent a lot of time learning how to use the tether mechanic to help me do some casual speed runs, since the levels are obstacle courses anyway. I've learned to like it, but I don't blame anyone if they think it's boring. Bring on the 32X reviews!

I always felt this game was underappreciated. It's definitely not as polished as other Sonic titles but It's also more unique as well. To be fair with as little effort as Sega put into the 32X, I'm surprised it turned out as good as it did. Another great video to btw. Keep it up buddy.👍

I too. I was thinking that the color variety was pushing Genesis forward. But the review by SLX makes sense. The graphics kinda stayed true to Sonic material, while 32X does the heavy lifting elsewhere like mode 7 style scaling. I learned a lot from this review. Like this WAS a Genesis game, a Sonic game. Wow. Makes a lot of sense why people looked down on it.

@@CarlosXPhone It’s such an interesting game. It does push the colors forward, even though it’s 32x for characters, and Genesis for stages, because stages are way more colorful than normal, and the characters are especially detailed/ colorful.
