Today’s lesson we’re looking at how to query WHO someone is by using KO WAI....
And to keep it simple we’ll look at 4 phrases...the most common 4 phrases that you’ll use when asking WHO someone is!
Who is he/she?
Who is this? (a person located near me)
Who is that? (a person located near you/the person I’m speaking to)
Who is that? (a person located beyond either of us, for example on the other side of the road)
To start, we always use KO WAI, and then add the appropriate word next.
So in the case of asking who he or she is we need to use the word ia:
Ko wai ia? Who is he/she?
Below are the other three examples:
Ko wai tēnei? Who is this? (a person located near me)
Ko wai tēnā? Who is that? (a person located near you/the person I’m speaking to)
Ko wai tērā? Who is that? (a person located beyond either of us, for example on the other side of the road)
Note that if you use tēnei, then the response is tēnā (this versus that)
If you use tēnā, then the response is tēnei
If you use tērā, then the response is tērā
Kia kaha e te whānau!
