I think so many people actually desire this coming back that there could be serious incentive now that Kodokan showed the way. Previously it was a no-brainer to follow IJF rule set because that's where you're gonna compete if you desire to be pro, but now there might be more amateur interest for competing. This will make judo much more watchable to the non judoka. Unfortunately, when judo was opened up to more countries when Russia broke up, more regional wrestling integrated into judo. Instead of sorting the rules out (actually, the rule existed) they changed judo, not for the better. Imoa

I think you have it wrong. Leg grab judo prior to the ban was horrific to watch because people were assuming extremely unrealistic bent postures just to hide their legs and deny any sort of techniques. This in turn makes the cool throws hard to do, and scoring in general really difficult. The Japanese however tend to play Judo for the glory of the Ipppon, so they can be more counted on not to game the system. Actually the regional wrestling styles of like Mongolia, Georgia, Kazakhstand and all that love to work upper body techniques without fear of leg grabs. They're big throwers, nothing like American ankle snatchers. If anything, the full ban is specifically what resulted in Japan's worst Judo performance in 2012.

People need to stop accusing Japanese favouritism as the reason for the leg grab ban. The Japanese had always been the most vocal opponents of it, and in fact the complete ban contributed to Japan's worst Olympic outing in 2012.

Are you mistaking the AJJF for the Kodokan? The Kodokan has always allowed leg grabs - both in practice and competition when the ruleset is "Kodokan rules" I hope to hell the IJF does not bring back leg grabs - 90% of leg grabs in practice (not Internet highlight reels) were guys with not much technique waiting for you to attack so they could grab your nuts and try to throw you. Everyone seems to forget this. Judo is so much nicer to watch (and train) now.

Aren’t the AJJF and the Kodokan run under the same umbrella?
@bd0111

@@JudoHighlights2015 I honestly do not know. I would imagine they are somehow incestuously connected though. But in terms of rulesets, no. Kokokan has their rules at their dojo (for training) and their competitions (monthly tournaments, tsukinami/kohaku). But groups hold competitions at the Kodokan and the group holding the tournament determines the rules I believe. Usually a variation on the current IJF rules, but with judges to give a flag decision (for time reasons I would assume). And I assume you see the same at local tournaments out your way. The All Japan Championships (open weight) has it's own ruleset I believe, which seems to change year to year, thus this announcement I assume.

Kodokan-run competitions have allowed leg grabs from what I've read, but the competitions that matter for people who want to compete internationally (including the open weight All Japan Judo Championships) operate on international rules since they're a selection criteria for the national team. It wouldn't make sense for the international competitors to be training for a rule set domestically only to find out they can't actually do everything they thought they could. I do think with this rule change there is a high chance we could see a lighter person (90 or under) win the AJJC if they are allowed, since leg grabs such as sukui nage were one of the equalizers for shorter and smaller competitors.

@@r.s.819 Exactly correct about the major Japanese domestic tournaments for seniors using IJF rules, with the open weight All Japan Judo Championships being the exception. Hell, it's open weight - that doesn't exist in international competition any longer. This year was an eight minute final with flag decision, earlier rounds 5 minutes with flag decision. 2023 - 4 minute matches with golden score like current IJF rules. And I'm getting too old to remember further back, but I can't forget 1994 - Yoshida vs Konno - kanibasamis and wakigatame - both were banned in international competition by then. As for lighter players having luck due to leg grabs - I doubt it. Koga may have had one of the most impressive performances of all time in 1990 and I suppose he touched a leg or two with his sode, but that's it. I seriously doubt a u90kg competitor is going to be picking up an attacking 130kg opponent. It will be very interesting to see if I am proved wrong come April though.

The IJF made a weird rule that no one can hold hands on the lower body because of the way Mongolian judoka Naidangiin Tüvshinbayar played. So does that mean wrestling beats judo? The IJF is full of scared fools. I very much welcome the new rules that have been rediscovered.

@@TheNEOverse they are bringing it back with a tweak because leg grabbing is a big part of judo, but it's also big in wresteling, hence the tweak - to distinguish it from wresteling and prevent wrestlers from just going for it. What proof do you need? They banned it for a reason.

@@HantonSacu That is not at all proof of wrestlers dominating though. They banned leg grabs because it made Judo look like shit wrestling, not to protect Judoka from wrestlers. Judoka and wrestlers actually train together all the time, they're not scared of one another.

@TheNEOverse

It absolutely won't. You don't think players will just dive into people's legs and turtle when it fails under the guise of 'activity'? Part of the reason for the ban was because leg grabs occupied the role of Drop Seoi spam back then. It was a huge shido mill.
