Especially if you compare it with an atrocious rendition of the same piece by Perlman.

Spiritual rendition without unnecessary haste, with superb nuances and contrast and yet vibrato is excessive for Bach; Jansen sounds more baroque playing this piece; but Kogan is best at playing Back among fiddlers of Jewish origin.

Hi. Leonid Kogan was obviously an extraordinary violinist. However, it seems to me that he has an extremely muscular approach to the instrument, as if he were a bundle of nerves. If that were the case, playing would be very tiring and painful. Is it my impression that composure joins rigidity or is there some trick underneath?

Hi, I cannot answer with any certainty, but I’m just gonna say this - my current professor studied under Kogan for five years in Moscow. He has an extraordinarily similar approach to playing. What I suspect we can see in this recording is not tension, but rather the fact that he puts down the full weight of his right arm onto the violin, helping him celebrate such a full and concrete sound. Again, that’s just what I suspect based on my knowledge about him, his school and what he taught my professor, I might be wrong. Hopefully it helps!

Well, it is Jasha Heifetz you are describing... Heifetz was all the time on the extreme edges...even pianissimo. Nope, Kogan was absolutely free , so was Heifetz. Muscular tension is inexistant in the playing of Heifetz, OISTRACH, or Kogan. The perfect symbiosis with the instrument allows the greatest freedom.

@@marcvilleneuve1889 So, all that I can assume is that every personal muscolar physiognomy is an individual fact, as a peculiarity of the own natural predisposition. It's only my projection of thought intentions that realizes to me the idea of that body sculpturization. Thanks.

@@alessandrovaccari782 Hi, every great violinist has its own individuality. Violin playing and muscle is wrong thinking. Of course you use them. But in a way that they are not interfering with balance and symbiosis. Pressing with fingers on the string must be light and free. Same with bowings: everything is connected, everything is done without tension, even the longest bowings strokes. The more fast the bow glides , without excessive pressure, the bigger the sound projection is, even the pianissimo notes reach far away in the concert hall.
