@bobby smith Old Thai girlfriend forced me to try to learn, made me sit down for 30 mins with Thai books daily for a while, just wish I continued studying (she grew up in the states & eventually moved back for university, great girl). Unfortunately I plateaued and don't speak Thai nearly as well as i should. I'm from Vancouver, love Van & Canada as much as Thailand. I was a Category Manager, supply chain, purchasing. Also had a modestly successful biz in Thailand for some time which I recently sold (some will know of it, more on this later when I launch my new project TBA, soon;). Why Thailand? My father was recruited to head an engineering project in this part of the world. I came and visited and was hooked. Thanks Dad :)

@@SideTripLife,20 years ? You should be able too speak Thai much better than you do. I first came here in 1986 as a tourist. Came here every year for between 3 and 6 months up until 2001 then moved here permanently, in 3 weeks I will have been here 20 years. Thailand isn't as good as it used to be, back in the 80s and 90s.

@SideTripLife
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Walt. First, I feel for your predicament & others wanting to book as it's extremely difficult to know what may occur in the future with any certainty really. However, if anyone is going to go ahead and book anyways, obviously book direct with airline as you have a better course to cancellation recompense (failing a full refund, full credit at least). Also only book any hotel (or via booking platform) which offer full cancellation refunds. As vax continues to ramp up (thus cases etc go down) then more areas could begin to open up. On that note, the Thai Govt has just approved travel from Phuket Sandbox to Koh Samui, Koh Phi Phi, Railay and Koh Yao Yai/Noi after just 7 days on Phuket (reduced from 14 previously). All the above areas have 80%+ vax rates and zero to few cases. Can read more here: www.bangkokpost.com/business/2153291/new-phuket-rule-passes So, one 'hopes' this can extend to Krabi/Ao Nang/Koh Lanta in near future. But again, like anywhere on the planet at the moment, one cannot know the future with any certainty. Sorry, that's the best I can offer.

You're so fortunate to have seen it then and to have those memories, fantastic! 20 years ago I stayed at Bophut for 500 Baht night, also at Charlies Huts on the beach in Chaweng for 250 baht. Unfortunately the world doesn't stand still. However, in 'normal' high season you can still get decent rooms for under $30 all over Thailand and even lower in low season, that's a relative bargain anywhere these days. Can also find decent condos to rent, with pool, a/c & gym for under $300, even in Bangkok. Plus get a decent local meal for under $2 (or less) almost anywhere in Thailand. Back in my home town in the West, it's hard to find even a crap motel for under $100 and a plate of chicken fried rice under $10. All in all, Thailand still a relative bargain.

Next time perhaps ask what time the red public Songthaew goes by (usually frequently in 'normal' times) Cost should be around 100 baht/$3 on a shared route. Private ride will again be spendy though. For myself, don't like it but would rather shell out the $15 or so on final day to ensure I get to the airport on time. The cost of missing a flight makes 15 bucks look like a paltry bargain. But high time to revamp the whole system. In Bangkok most taxi drivers don't own the car, they rent their taxi for about 900 baht day (++) thus must make that back first each day, plus other expenses. Also the taxi meter rate has been at 35 baht flagfall for many years with no raise. So making changes would also require paying drivers better to use the meter. Doubt the public would go along with say min 30% higher meter rates though...

I think the girl at Hacienda Bophut also said from 1200 in reg high season. That's just $40/£30/€32 which nowadays is still a fairly good deal for beachfront places in 'normal' high season. Milage may vary but Thailand overall still good value imho.

Great username, love it :) Hey, I'm a guy on a budget like most so chose the backside view to save a few hundred baht. Figured can enjoy the view from the rooftop pool (and did, immensely:) However, when I travel with a friend I usually splash out a few more bucks, like here: kzitem.info/news/bejne/0pitvotmcGd4mo4 Thanks for your concern tho, cheers!

LOL! Hey, I may look like I'm living large but actually try to stick to a budget like most. Front side was 1500, back side 700 and still enjoyed the seaviews from the rooftop pool (+ the savings paid for my rental car;) For the record have stayed at luxury properties in the past (when found deals;) such as Cliff Ao Nang for example, see: kzitem.info/news/bejne/0pitvotmcGd4mo4 Or Hilton Hua Hin: www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0UXeR85K (etc etc). So, not necessarily always choosing the cheapest, simply like all round good value.
