@Aningorth Toriath, kein Vorwiderstand.

@0xf7c8

Your comment is 9 years old but I felt like correcting. The heat is not burning the cardboard. It's the light doing it. The visible, uv and infrared components.

I guess with no losses the energy at the focal point would be the same as produced by the arc!
@TheExplosiveGuy
There's actually lots of losses, that reflector is only exposed to less than half of the energy the arc is putting out since it's a hemisphere with a decent chunk removed in the middle, and it absorbs at least 1% or more of the energy hitting it assuming it's a perfect mirror surface, probably a bit more since I doubt that particular reflector is. Plus you get different absorption rates at different wavelengths in the mirror so that number could be higher for wavelengths like the IR or UV light the arc generates. Not to mention the amount of heat the arc is pumping into the air, there's a surprising amount of energy lost to heating air. There's definitely going to be a high luminous flux at the focal point for sure but it's nowhere _near_ the total energy produced by the arc. The closest you could get to it is if you somehow created an arc inside the exact center of a perfectly spherical reflector, but that brings you back to square one of putting your intended target inside the arc itself lol...
