Thank you for talking in plain terms and for your 'how to' step by step instructions. You rock! I can't wait to start converting my Hayward for my koi pond. 😊 I will first go to Amazon and order the items you are using to make my project a success. Thanks again.👍

I'm using a superflo pump and the same filter for my pond. Loaded it with koi blocks. Couldn't figure out why I was getting so much back pressure. In recirculate the pump was pumping water fine to the pond. I'm going to try poking holes in the laterals this weekend. Thanks for the great video!

Thank you. I’m glad I saw this. I’m trying to convert my poop sand to koi bead. This is what I need. I am not a handyman but I know that this can be done and I can get someone to do this rather than buy a new bead filter that may cost 3k

Now it will work in reverse or it will work normal as sand media because k1 will float...?

How about making a bottom drain? I put 1”!bulkhead In bottom, installed thread screen ( Amazon) valve outside to drain hydrogen sulphide off bottom and detritus. Media does not come out. Should smell the aftermath. Can drain to move filter., I flush filtration while running.can put 90degree inside and piping to bottom to get it all. Bulkhead carefully cut hole to fit exactly so no leaks . Did 15 filters.

How do you feed air to the filter ?

Very creative. Are you still happy with the filter modifications? The filter basket only covers the holes in the lower part of the diffuser so I am wondering if you have had any problems with the K1 media escaping through the upper holes into the discharge lines. Also, what do you consider to be the maximum flow rate through this size filter? Thanks for your help. Les.

The filter works great. I get 55gpm through the filter with minimal back pressure (3psi) The skimmer basket covers all the holes in the top valve and I have never lost any k1 media. I have converted two more and have 3 hooked up in parallel .

Thanks David for your quick response. Glad to hear the conversions from sand to K1 beads are so successful.......I have an identical sand filter and valve as the ones in your video and plan to copy your modifications. Do you operate the filter as a down-flow for filtration and reverse it to up-flow for backwash using the valve as normal for sand filters? Do you do anything to provide agitation for cleaning such as air injection or does the reverse flow do the job? Much appreciated, Les.

Why would the valve need that extra protection? The sand is much smaller How did it work on your pond? I'm thinking about replacing my zeolith sand with K1 media for a normal swimming pool.

Hi, I am using this filter in the regular direction. Down flow is filtration. Upflow would be backwash. The K1 media will float enough in upflow mode, because it is less dense than sand, and will sneak out into the pond through the largest holes in the diffuser. So we add a skimmer basket to prevent that.

Great video! I have been considering a small garden pond and I was wondering if a sand filter could be adapted to this purpose. Just a quick note about the specification on the Hayward filter you reference at 7:24. The 3.1 value is the effective filtration area in sq feet of the sand filter. This is the area of a horizontal cross section (a circle) of the inside of the filter. This is an important number used when calculating volumetric flow rates of the sand filter in high pressure applications. Based on this your 3 cubic feet of K1 filter material should have come up to a level a bit more than one foot from the inside bottom of the filter due to the smaller diameter of the bottom of the case and the space taken up by the laterals and center return pipe. As a point of reference, when filled with sand, the Hayward Manual says to fill it to a level no higher than 10" below the top of the outer chamber opening so as to not interfere with the valve assembly.

I am a little late adding this. The K1 media was filled to 2/3 capacity inside the canister. About 10 inches from the top. Some free space is required for the backwash so the k1 will move freely.

Yes, working great. Easy to clean and very low backpressure for good flow

Are you using a air pump to break the dirt up for cleaning? How long you having to backwash to get clear water? Seams like it would be better to be able to drain the water like on my barrel k1 but hesitant to drill the drain hole in a older tank

Hi, I have three of these converted filters in parallel. I do use a spa blower I got if Amazon to blow air through all three filters at same time while in backwash mode. Then turn of spa blower and run water in backwash mode. Then turn filters to rinse until clear, then turn to filtration. I do this once a month.

@@dskear thanks for the reply i was planning to use the air pump im using on my k1 barrel filter my bottom drains and skimmer box goes into a 150 gallon take with matala mats before reaching the pumps so shouldn't have anything big going into the k1 filter my water is already crystal clear but im pushing hard on my fish so more filtration is always a good idea as they are growing quickly and consuming more and more food

i was told that flow of water has to be in reverse if using Kaldness media vs sand because it floats. did you reverse the flow or it does not matter? if so how did you reverse it

figured out how to reverse flow. run filter in backwash mode with the waste output being your new output

Will this filter have any mechanical filtration? I’ve got one of these lying around but I don’t think I need any more biological filtration.

I don’t run any other mechanical filtration on my pond, other than a leaf skimmer basket. So I would say yes it does provide some mechanical filtration.

Nice job, but you have to inverse your waterflow. Change return and pump on your valve.
@dskear

I did not have to reverse the flow. It works well as a “stock” down flow design for filtering. It changes to upflow when you backwash it.
