Going into our 3rd summer with the DIY Modern Koi Pond and it's time for a deep cleaning. The first fall I was smart and covered the pond with a net to keep the leaves out, but it presented other problems with leave blowing the patio that still forced leaves in. Last year I decided not to install the net and see how I faired....the amount of leaves that went in was insane. I've scooped the bottom many times and there seems to be an endless amount of leaves. I was having considerable trouble keeping the ammonia levels down and knew I needed to take action to fully clean out the bottom of the pond.
Another problem that has added to the poor quality is the number of fish - it was OVERSTOCKED! The goldfish had bred last year and with the new additions, we had over 30 Goldfish and 9 Koi (not full grown) in a 2,000 gallon pond. Having 9 full size Koi will one day be more than is recommended for the size of the pond. So I'll be looking for new homes for the goldfish.
The process wasn't very painful and the slowest part was draining out the water. The project took about 4 hours of actually working time and a few more waiting for the pond to empty. It was totally worth it.
