When I was young and being raised in Temple, I heard our Cantor sing this at evening Temple and at Yom Kippur. Temple Israel Hollywood .California. You men sing it with such soul that would move Hashem.

Hey aaround, I was brought up in the Ukranian Catholic church and my grandmother was a Jewish Pole. I have the corner on the guilt market. I grew up in a largely Jewish neighbourhood and learned to love he wonderful music of the Jewish tradition, my own Ukranian tradition, and the more Western English hymnary. Today my religious views are more closely aligned to B'Hai so I can appreciate every tradition of music without fear or bias.

I was raised Catholic but I have such respect for Judaism! The fact that you still do as you have always done; the togetherness and traditions that keep this wonderful religion & way of life so solid, in such a mess of a world we have today, always gives me hope that good still exists in our world. I do not share your beliefs, in that I am a Christian, but I live stream Friday evening Temple services every week and I get a lot more warmth & love coming through those services than I ever did in a Catholic mass. Thank you Udi Spielman, for your beautiful rendition of Kol Nidre and may God Bless us all.

This is Cantor Udi Spielman and it was recorded in Israel, where he was born & grew up, though he splits some of his time in the USA. Interestingly, he did not start to study cantorial music until he was past middle age. Previously, he was a pop singer & recording artist for more than 20 years!

Years ago I played this over the phone for a friend who had 'found religion' and was 'sort of a Catholic'. Without knowing what it was, he said it was the sort of music that 'the Church' needed. I myself am not religious (and not an atheist either), but I consider this to be a very inspiring piece. I've had it on my Favorites Folder for many years.

I grew up forced to go to Spanish-language Catholic church (no hate at all but I'm not religious) and I remember at least one song that was sung in every church service, which I now know is a traditional Jewish song. "La Paz Esté Con Nosotros" (the song where everybody is "giving each other peace", e.g. shaking hands and hugging and such) is originally "Hevenu Shalom Alechem". Even the lyrics are basically the same. kzitem.info/news/bejne/yomLlol9bYiEeH4 kzitem.info/news/bejne/yHyo0XVtn4FzrHo

Kol Nidre started as a prayer to allow Jews who had been forced to convert to Christianity during the middle ages to be released from the vows between them and G-d, so they could pray once again with the congregation. It does not release someone from a vow between their fellow man. It only releases a person from a vow made because the threat of death in the alleged act of Christian or Islamic charity. The existence of the Kol Nidre prayer shows how seriously we Jews take a vow to G-d.

@olenfersoi8887

Kol Nidre is not a person's name. It is Hebrew for "All Vows" and the song is meant to disavow any and all vows or promises that were made under duress or force...originally based on many Jews having been given the choice to leave their country, convert...or die.

I just watched "Sophie Tucker - My Yiddishe Momme" . She looked and acted the part very well. She was a very good singer,too. From what I've read elsewhere, she must have been a real Mensch. The "Cantorial Concert at Grand Choral Synagogue" was very beautiful and dignified. I wonder if it would be possible to listen to a live concert in the Synagoge in Stockholm, without being a member of the congregation, or in Israel, where I'm going next month.

So Beautiful... Kol Nidre releases from vows made under duress, such as Jews forced to convert during the Inquisition. It is not a dispensation to break vows as is convenient. A person can atone for sins against G-d, but sins committed against other people can only be forgiven by the injured party.
