Really enjoyed your video. I’m thinking that you adding your cabin chat to the video instead of just the engine noise would improve the viewer experience. Thanks!

Ha, I love how at 3:11 you try to get her to take the controls, and she absolutely refuses...lol. Very cool plane : )

The grass strip you visited has trees at both ends but I noticed that you didn't use flaps during any of your practice runs. How long is the strip? Hard to tell from the video. Nicely done. I got a kick out of how she adamantly said no to taking the controls. You have a new subscriber.

David, in this particular video I hadn’t had much time in the Kolb with short field landing, actually this video was taken only a week or two after I got my private license in a Citabria. Then this video I took maybe a day or two after I transitioned myself to the Kolb. In this video linked here, kzitem.info/news/bejne/0oNpyGl9qoSfnpg You can see right in the first few seconds a take off from that strip, and later some landing approaches. I will make a separate video that shows all take offs/landings at that one, it’s 1400’ long with 20-30’ trees on the northern end, and 40’ trees on the southern end. I tried using partial flaps, full flaps, and no flaps on several occasions for both take off and landing. (The Kolb only has two flap positions, partial and full) and I found the partial setting to be the best for that application.

how much did this beast cost?
@cheapcheeze

$20k for the Kolb, $7k for the enclosed trailer I got to store it in. Not unreasonable at all compared to the cost of a new car nowadays. 😄

@@cheapcheeze I agree thats a very attainable price point! Did you get it used? Seems like their webpage prices them higher.

@@codmott286 Yes I absolutely bought it used, I hunted on barnstormers for a few months before I came across it. It has a rotax 912, and at that time had ~300 hours on both engine/airframe. I felt like it was a pretty good deal for sure. You're right, new kits from the factory are a bit pricey, then you still have to factor in the cost of a powerplant. It can get real expensive real quick 😄. I have no issues buyig used, provided you trust the individual you purchase it from, in my case it was the original builder/owner and we went in depth on build processes and he had tons of documentation and photos of the construction.

Runway looks a little rough are you allowed to land on the grass at that airport? I read your reply on cost, you got a great deal.

It’s not too bad actually, in this video link here, kzitem.info/news/bejne/0oNpyGl9qoSfnpg you can see some take offs/coming into land snippets of video. I should really make a longer video with the approach and takeoff distance of that one, it’s actually my folks property. I helped build that runway with my father when I was 12-14 years old with an old Oliver Bulldozer and a tow behind road grader. It started out as all trees. Now the grass strip is 1400’ long with 20-30’ trees on the north end, 40’ trees on the south end.

Just curious have you ever flown without the wing gap seal? I just got a twinstar mark 2 and haven’t flown it yet but it did not come with the wing gap seals and I’m worried this may be an issue if so do you think I could fabricate my own somehow?
@cheapcheeze

@@danko1764 I have not flown without it, so I’m not sure how much it would affect aerodynamics. Although on top of my gap seal, I have the BRS chute, and that is pretty big/bulky so I can’t imagine flying without the gap seal would be too much different as far as drag effects. Good thing about experimentals is you can do whatever you want within reason and putting it back in phase 1. So just go for it and keep notes on performance if you’re comfortable with that. Or just fab your own out of aluminum and plexiglass.

@@cheapcheeze I ended up flying without it and honestly couldn’t tell if it flew good or bad without it being I’ve never flown with it but I think I’m gonna try to fab one myself just to be on the safe side I spoke with kolb and they quoted upwards of 1000$ for one which is ridiculous
