Bengal is a very violent place. That's one of the reasons for such brutality. The things I saw in communist era are just inhumane. And the things I read in novels about the Naxal era tells me that the history of violence is long , and probably started with the Freedom fighting against the British. The British faced so much resistance that they had to transfer the Capital from Calcutta to Delhi and opt for the division of Bengal which eventually happened.
@trojanwar760

Absolute trash of an assessment. What was Bengal supposed to do against an occupying entity like the East India Company? The fact that you draw a parallel of this with the Kolkata rape incidents is so so so stupid. Comparing resistance to rape culture. You don't find a place like UP a violent place which has 4 rape incidents reported every single day. Compare a sh*t hole like UP with Bengal which had the courage to show outrage and bring a change in the law. Where do you see UP after countless such instances and nobody bats an eye?

There has been outrage in cases like the motorway case or the Noor Mukadam case in Pakistan too. You make it sound like there is outrage on every rape case in India. After Nirbhaya this is the second time the entire nation has come together in a protest. Are you that delusional to think that no rape incidents happened in between the two incidents? Where was the nationwide outrage when it was a dalit girl raped in Hathras by an upper caste arsehole with links to the BJP? Because she was a dalit she was not only raped but her body was created over night using petrol. Is this how we the 5000 year old civilization respect the dead? By not even honoring the victim in her last rite? We are equally as bad as Pakistan in terms of women safety. Accept it. Not everything has to be about patriotism.

Sadly outrage over any issue in both countries (unfortunately) depends on the social position of the victim/survivor. It'll sound harsh but most people are enraged over the Kolkata case because the victim was a "doctor" someone considered an "achiever" in the most conventional sense. Most of those (including influencers) sharing "all eyes on doctors" won't bat an eyelid if the survivor/victim in question is a woman from marginalised communities (Dalits, Adivasis, Muslims, in India Minorities in Pak). That's primarily because we largely accept rap3 as a tool for political and social revenge. Until we change this there will never be justice - not for the doctor in Kolkata, nor for the 14-year-old Dalit girl from Muzaffarpur.

Over90% of violence cases are against women and may be 10% could be men... And who did that to that 10% of men? OTHER MEN ☺️and respectfully I disagree on one thing that "women will contribute in household financially" #$??? if that will be the case then you're setting free men from their ONLY responsibility... Remember all the house labour cooking cleaning all done by women which takes more than 4 hours a day... And then child birth and child raising is also done by women alone and unfortunately child raising is a skill men can't excel in as much as women... So, the only thing left is finances and now in the name of feminism you're putting another burden on women... If men will not give financial support then it means they're only bringing sperm to the table... These traditional roles are completely fine... Nature doesn't allow women to go out and earn the same way men can do it at least in the era of children being under 12. IN MY POV Women should earn but for themselves only so that nobody could control them but not to contribute in finances... If husband agree to take full charge of house labour then it's fine otherwise it's unfair.😊😊

Agree on the social attitudes and contribution to violence on women. However, one issue that I find in this topic is that R* is talked about in a way that is divorced from the reality of overall violent crime rate. Somehow it is conveyed that R*/M* of women/children is much worse that simply M* and violence and deserves max attention. Violence on men who are the overwhelming majority of victims is somehow "understandable" but violence on women stands out as a big no and evokes maximum sympathy and emotional outpouring. R* is on the spectrum of violent crime as a whole and steps have to be taken to reduce overall crime in society. All crime has to go down and often the same steps of better law enforcement, judicial efficiency will help everyone. Heinous cases like Kolkata are an extreme example of violent crime but it is no less shocking than mass shootings, lynchings and serial killings which are in the same spectrum with victims equally innocent and perpetrators being sick monsters. We should also stop talking about crime in absolute numbers and instead normalize it to the population. Saying women in India are R* every so many min is simply sensationalizing and fear-mongering the issue. We should instead focus on violent crime by type per 100k population which is a lot more indicative of the actual crime rate. This also allows for meaningful comparisons between countries, cities and states.

It was a wonderful podcast (like always) but the end of the podcast led me to the following conclusion: 1. If Orea Maqbool-type people do victim blaming that women are the reason for their own rape because of their clothes, we can counter them with arguments about why children in Madaras have been raped, why girls with burqas been starred, why females even raped in the graves? It is not the clothing issue it is the issue of the sick culture! 2. If liberals say women should wear whatever they want and they should be protected. I agree but there is a natural problem, women have been raped since the time of Neanderthals (I am not joking here)! The male dominance over women is a bitter truth and can’t be denied. We can never tame a man when it comes to a woman! The question arises what can we do then! 3. So, we need a balanced approach to save the dignity of women which is clearly discussed in the Quran that, Man should keep his eyes down when he encounters a woman, and woman should be properly dressed in a way that her body parts are not visible in any way! Now, you may consider me a religious man but I am not, I just don’t see any better argument than this! The reason I see it as the most balanced approach is that whatever you do, you can't stop man from being an animal, just try to keep his prey out of his sight! The woman may get justice but she may not get out of trauma!

Thanks for this podcast Shehzad, was much needed at this time (which is always). Just a point on the use of term “bachiyan”. Now I remember this word being used in our cricles since ever and I am talking since we were in primary school and I dont think it was ever used to infantilise females but was just used as a term for the female gender and nothing more than that. It was probably used as an infantilising term by the older men at the time and then our generation picked it up (without the infantilising meaning of it). Although not saying it should be used as a term to describe women in any context.

I was looking forward to it however I'm extremely disappointed. She was supposed to talk about rape culture and there she started emphasizing the need of women's safety in workplace to relieve men of their so called burden of being providers. Really??? Is this why a woman deserves to be safe that it'll also benefit men? Do you really think that men already don't know it? The benefits they get by committing crimes against us and making our workplaces unsafe for us are way more than the benefit you are talking about. This is exactly why they do it. I don't understand why do most of the feminists have to be so polite to males and include them in our every discussion as if women aren't already told in a Patriarchal society like ours to put men before us and be polite to them.

@@prehmemon Did I? Perhaps I didn't express myself clearly. I didn't intend to dismiss your entire discussion on rape culture. I only aimed to challenge a specific argument that I disagreed with and found problematic as a fellow feminist, and I believe my focus is justified. I appreciate much of what you said in the podcast, I'm very glad this discussion happened. I didn't mean that you are saying 'women's safety should ONLY be justified by how it benefits men' However, the idea that 'women's participation in the workforce ALSO benefits men and men should think about it' is not something that I only heard from you, it's central to much of mainstream feminist discourse, and that's precisely why I chose to address it and I couldn't ignore it just to focus on the rest of points. I don't think this is cherry picking or straw men fallacy. It's important to critically examine these arguments, especially when they are so pervasive and have such a significant impact on how feminist goals are framed and pursued.
@MK-id9sz
17 күн бұрын
Of course every feminist advocates for and prioritises women's rights and safety. However, the argument that women's participation in the workforce or the creation of safe spaces also reduces burden on men seems unnecessary and problematic. Why to even include it?
@prehmemon
16 күн бұрын
@@MK-id9sz The point about workplace safety isn’t about benefiting men - it’s about recognizing the patriarchal values that force men into the role of primary breadwinners. Research shows that men who bear the sole financial responsibility in families are more likely to experience frustration and stress which can be big contributing factors in domestic violence. Which is a direct result of the pressure placed only on men to earn by patriarchal societal norms. By (1) focusing on the opportunity for women to also generate income for themselves and their children (which will enhance their own individual financial independence) and (2) creating safer work environments for women, we can build dual-income households which not only improve family prosperity but also help alleviate the immense financial strain placed on men. This, in turn, can reduce frustration and the likelihood of domestic violence. So, while women’s safety is an inherent right, the broader economic and social benefits are crucial to highlight. It’s about recognizing the interconnectedness of these issues and shifting harmful norms that restrict both men and women from living fuller and safer lives.

Also, you do realise that every case where there is no conviction is considered a fake case, right? It doesn't necessarily mean it was fake, it can also mean that the police did not collect the necessary evidence, or the prosecution could not prove the case, or that powerplay prevented proper justice. Do you think Kuldeep Singh Sengar would have been convicted had there been no outcry? The way that investigation was carried out was itself a travesty of justice. Ok now I am going to say something that will land me in a certain slot by the faux liberalists and characters who would like to be seen using certain words and expressing thoughts which are likely to prop them up for the next Nobel prize. This panelist on the podcast is getting a little ahead of herself when she even takes exception to the word “bachee” or ad nauseam referring to locker room banter as something primarily honed towards raping women. This same panelist will find nothing wrong if (to use her benchmark metaphor) say in New York men refer to woman as a chic or a broad, but that will add up and with with her perfectly well. She runs around in Zamzama park, has a defence society ethos and likes is to discuss these sensitive issues without any lived correlation to the cohort she is poring her heart over. The kind of transformation is usually discussed in plush drawing rooms over grilled prawns and wine…she has no understanding how people in financially weak demographics even survive let alone discern a good touch from a bad one…statutory rape and words like it are great for feel good…does she even know how children living in lyari or shahalami even get through day in one piece than having to enlighten themselves or their parents to see to it their children and wards are not violated? This requires a whole different perspective and a different approach where one will have to successfully extricate those whole narrative from the cluthes of religion, madrassah and the soothsayers… yeh khatoon abhi bhe hung up hae k bachee Kyun kaha…I liken her to Prada wearing women walking twenty yards under the glare of the media ostensibly for the bhattah working women…come on Shahzad you could better than that

To pick one word used by her and get triggered and not understand the broader point she’s making of how a derogatory culture is made gradually and not in a day is crazy. Words and actions in every culture don't have to have like for like offense associated with them, it's relative. For example, they discussed the sexualization of children in media thats primarily a western problem, they are certainly not worshipping the west and demonizing the east. She's using certain lingo also because of the audience of this podcast. I have friends who are case workers and the language in the field in different and based on who you are dealing with whereas language among ourselves can be different. Most all (and yes, almost ALL) my school, college friends, moms, aunties have traumatic stories so don't you dare tell a woman she has no lived experience, does she have to be dirt poor, gang raped and killed for you to count it as experience. If you have a vagina, its a lived experience atleast in India/Pak, this is how rampant this shit is. Women and children from ALL economic backgrounds get abused EVERYWHERE by EVERYONE, even in plush drawing rooms, in schools, colleges, in elite western societies too and not by religious men, uneducated, backward men. These are not fun party topics for women to be discussed over appetizers and wine, these are our LIVED experiences. And it is every woman's right to speak, rich/poor/elite/privileged/low-caste/hight-caste/mulim/hindu/christian/desi/western, not just your choice of who you deem appropriate. There is immense healthcare and medical research on discussing good/bad touch and giving kids the language so they know what’s happening. If you don’t have some solution to offer, maybe sometimes it’s ok to be humble enough to accept that work is being done in this area and healthcare workers from whom these recommendations come from know better than you. As usual just like most men, you will just "other" the problem and gatekeep who gets to talk about it, lets just make fun and criticize anyone who talks about this, lets discredit women any chance we get, lets not for a second think they could be functioning intelligent human beings, lets have our biases on full display and throw them out there any chance we get. Oh but me and mine are just too pristine, too intelligent, even though we are privileged too, we as men have the intelligence to think about poor people and their plight, and their experiences but oh women, oh so dumb, so not able to even think outside their environment. we need a trillion conversations around it, and we get to have and express our opinions, all of US, even the Prada wearing ones. Some things in our lives could've been avoided or dealt/coped with if we had been give the education, the language, the tools in our childhood. We are trying our best to give our children tools that we didn't have. As a man of-course har baat mein taang adane ki aadat jo nahin jaa sakti. And if you are a woman then I don’t even know what to say. You are a prime example of why change can't happen. If even with education you have this mentality, then there's no hope. We clearly just co-exist but live in completely different realities, so don't try to tell us what our realities are.

Ah, the classic ‘let’s ignore the argument and attack the person’ move - textbook ad hominem. Instead of engaging with the issue of how terms like 'bachee' infantilize women and perpetuate harmful norms, you’re more interested in my background and jogging habits. A compelling distraction, but unfortunately irrelevant. Also, your assumption that people from ‘Defence society’ somehow live in a harassment-free bubble is naive at best, offensive at worst. Newsflash: class doesn’t immunize anyone from gendered violence. As for your detour into how the economically disadvantaged supposedly can’t discern a ‘good touch from a bad one’ - that's not just condescending, it’s false. Every community, whether it’s Lyari or Defence, grapples with these issues, and dismissing their struggles as something plush 'drawing room' liberals like to talk about doesn’t help anyone. By the way, equating Western misogyny (“broad”) as something I would brush off shows just how little attention you paid to my actual points. Lastly, this was not about Prada or prawns - it’s about addressing the entrenched culture of violence and misogyny that exists across socioeconomic divides. So while you’re busy casting me as some caricature, maybe next time try addressing the real issue instead of what I like to have for dinner.

And for a woman it is very easy to bring rape allegation, for as per the Indian law in this connexion her testimomy is enough than any medical or other type of evidence. Hence a woman can bring rape allegation even after 9 or 10 years. A woman in India so far has reported 38 cases of rape which are withour exception false to extort money from the alleged rapist as she can say that the police forcibly made her report the case as per the deal with the accused. I have seen this actually happening ! At least in India, a very large number of men too are vctims of unfounded rape allegations.
