It was the incompetence of the Canadian government in handling the situation that led to Luna's death. The animal was desperate for attention and the Canadian gov't did what it could to deprive the animal of that attention. In desperation it turned to the boats which led to his demise.

That would have been the worst thing they could do. I'm not a radical about this, but if you study just a little, all the captive whales need to be released. They suffer endlessly. Even the largest enclosures are too small. Their diets are unnatural, especially the ones from pods that eat mammals. They have food withheld as a training technique. No humans have been attacked by orcas in the wild. Only by the ones in captivity. One of our most inhumane failings is to captive orcas.

Why didnt they just relocate him as planned?
@HellPatrol92
4 жыл бұрын
The capture was averted by the Natives, who said he was a former chief reincarnated. However, the capture and relocation plan itself were a bit shady. There was no guarantee the relocation would succeed (Springer was separated from his own family for only a few months, while Luna was there for years), and in case the plan did not work, the DFO was not clear about Luna's destiny, which included the option of captivity and maybe even culling him. So, it's really not sure how things would have turned out, and I think those who opposed the capture also did so out of love for Luna. However, now I am also sad we will never know how it would have gone; maybe he would have been back with his mother.

@@SweetDee928 the government never “got an ok” as you said. Not sure where you got that from. They turned down a plan by orca experts to reunite Luna with his pod because they wanted to put him in an aquarium prison and make money off him. The natives felt that Luna was best left to his own devices in the ocean (THEY WERE RIGHT) so they interfered with Luna’s capture. Lune was not hit by a boat. Luna was killed by fishermen who were tired of him affecting the bay but there was not enough evidence to charge anyone of the murder.

He may of been used to the props of small boats, but he was also used to situations where more often than not, people turned off their engines around him. Plus, he was getting less and less attention from people, and thus getting more and more desperate for it. The General Jackson, the boat that killed him, was a 104 foot tugboat who either didn't notice him, or, if they did, didn't stop. He got too close to the prop and got sucked in. He wasn't run over or hit. And the captain of that ship radioed in what had happened moments after he hit Luna. If he was trying to cover up the fact he intentionally killed the whale, wouldn't it be best to say nothing and just let Luna vanish, and his death be a mystery?

I'll just say it, the First Nations prevented him from being reunited with his pad. Just turned this animal into a pawn in their resentment of the Dept of Fisheries. And we know how the story ends.

You know nothing about what happened. I live here. There was a very very big chance the L pod wouldn’t have accepted Luna, had that been the case, Luna would have been put into captivity at sea world or a similar aquarium. The First Nations stepped in because they felt a spiritual connection to the animal, plus the low likelihood of the pod accepting him and most of all, had the pod not accepted him, he would be swimming in a bleached aquarium left to live a life of captivity. If there’s anyone to blame for what happened with Luna it’s the department of fisheries and the fisherman who likely killed him because of all the regulations and eyes that were on the area due to his presence. Don’t talk about things you don’t know. Sincerely, Vancouver island resident
