John C Reilly was such a standout in this film. His performance honestly doesn’t get enough credit. Just looking at him I could tell he was having so much fun.

Sam Jackson and John C. Riley made this movie for me. Jackson being blinded by his own hubris thinking he can take down Kong. And Riley having been made humble by the existence of Kong and others like him.

Late comment, but my opinion on the whole King Kong size controversy changed when I found out Legendary was adapting Toho Kong (who was also scaled-up so he can fight Godzilla in their first film together). The octopus eating scene was most likely a reference to Kong protecting that Skull Island village from a giant octopus...

Yeah, a lot of this sort of message and theme is very common for all Godzilla eras/lines that aren't Hollywood or Millenium. One of my favorites is Godzilla vs King Ghidorah from 1991, which features time traveleling Americans sabotaging Japan's economic future released in the year Japan's economic bubble burst. (Filmed as the stock market was starting to crash) Copying entire scenes from Terminator 2 the year it came out. Dumb fun, with something extra if you care to look for it.

you should really give the 1954 gojira a shot, it's far less monster focused than you would expect from and it's definitely a product of it's time but that's what makes it so great. it's a Japanese film made 10 years after the bombs fell and it's evident in how godzilla is portrayed as not this living creature but this dead eyed walking horror that powers through everything the army can throw at him. the focus isn't the destruction it causes but the lives lost or broken because of godzillas mere presence. also yeah characters a good too

This movie was completely forgettable. All I really remember is that I didn't find it very good, sort of like that Predator movie with the jewish lead that had that "made for TV" feel to it as well. Peter Jackson's King Kong was a much more fulfilling experience and hugely more ambitious as well.
