The Mandarin Orange (Citrus reticulata) is one of the pure ancestral citrus taxa which originated from China hence the name 'Mandarin'. But it has also evolved in regions including Japan and Southeast Asia. It's name is a calque of Swedish mandarin apelsin [apelsin from German Apfelsine (Apfel + Sina), meaning Chinese apple], first attested in the 18th century.
Japanese Mandarin oranges called 'Mikan' 蜜柑 (みかん) have been cultivated by South Korea without permission. Japan's National Agriculture and Food Research Organization, which developed the mandarin orange variety, announced to the South Korean government that Japan had applied for registration of a variety overseas, and thus shipment was suspended.
