Once again, great quality review 👍🏻 This first midi 2.0 implementation looks very promising and already seems much more interesting then Native Instruments proprietary NKS protocol. NI is going to have a hard time pushing NKS once MIDI 2.0 becomes more commonplace. Third party vendors will have to choose whether to support both protocols. NKS is only useful to people using the NI controllers, I've explored using Komplete Kontrol with third party controllers and the implementation is severely flawed. NKS will never support control of hardware devices but MIDI 2.0 will. Maybe NI will actually wise up and just port Komplete Kontrol to MIDI 2.0.

Being familiar with the Wavestate, some of the exposed controls are a weird choice - "key sync" for the arp, for example, is something you'll most likely set once for that patch... and then never touch again. It's very rare that you'd want to change it live - and it probably doesn't need to be exposed on the first 2 pages of the keyboard's controls. But over time, as the tech becomes more mature, all these little details will iron themselves out.

The controls I need exposed at the top level for performance are amp EG, FX depth, filter, arp/sequencer rate/gate. What I need exposed for programming is completely different. Mine 61 keys version is not louder than any keybeds are used before, can not confirm yet if this keybed is better to play than IK Multimedia i used. DA converter is 44.1 Khz and sounds ... dull? I guess in comparison with IK Multimedia audio interface but have to check it out on different programs. The plate is not too big - 13inch macbook pro or air is ok but not sure if it handle my 16" macbook pro m1 but its perfect for Akai controller i use for Ableton. Would be great if @loopop could ask developers at Korg if they are working on some updates which will allow to control Arturia or NI Kontakt instruments at leasts when it comes to 1 scene = 8 knobs assigned. It's sorta hard to buy New Midi Controllers at all these days.. For only a hundred or two more, you could buy a Modal Cobal 8X 61Key or whatever it's called. Sure it's digital, has no modwheels but instead a little metal joystick, and the encoders feel um... hollow? empty? cheap? I dunno... but they are endless, encoders and the keybed is decent. From what I remember the keys and the chassis felt solid, and it had all those lowfi soundw-ave/oscillators, like 8bit sine waves and many different filters. I believe it has a knob-per-function and space for something to be put on it, like a sampler, small mixer, pedals, and so on. I don't usually buy Midi Controller at all, but if I were looking for one, I may just buy a digital synth with a decent keybed. I don't really think Poly-Aftertouch is necessary but as far as New Synths for sound, I would be more interested in a Take-5 or TEO-5. I may pick one up to add to the collection and then grab a Modal or maybe some cheap 61Key Vintage Synth Used to use as a controller. If the Korg had An Input as well and both the In/Out was at 48k instead of, I believe 44.1k, then maybe I'd be a little more interested. Midi Controllers are way too expensive New these days for my blood. I'd rather save for something with VCO's. There must be some pretty agitated mutterings in the engineering and UI design lunchroom. Sheer bloody daftness. A slow iteration of various models is pretty bloody pointless, when they could have made an unbeatable market leader which gobbled up all future competition, and THEN after world domination released a deluxe 88-note version, and worked at producing cheaper, less-featured knock downs. After all, the DX7 sold millions before they went into lower and higher quality/feature-set iterations/editions. Wow, this was fast! Great overview as always, my impression is that this controller was thought off more by the marketing department than the actual developers, its selling point are 2 controversial technologies and one of limited use : The poly aftertouch is a niche feature, that many will find hard to use, and judging by the "wears off with time if hard pressed" disclamer is either too fragile or a bad quality implementation. It's good to see an actual controller with one Midi 2.0 feature, but it's really identical in actual use to premapping and vst hosts, and even less complete at the moment. The included soundcard with no inputs is useful only if you have an all in the box setup and use your keyboard connected to the speakers, buI not for hybrid setups with an external soundcard with full I/O. So, yeah, it's a nice technological demo, but the rest of the controller is standard fare, with few controls at a not so cheap price.

I saw that warning as well but I wouldn't think that way ( poor quality ) but instead stating that if you want to get a good mileage of aftertouch, you have to not treat it as aftersmash... which kinda makes sense right, there is a pressure sensor in there and if you go hulk on it it might dull off

Hurray! I was afraid MIDI 2.0 would die a silent death. Well, let's not celebrate too early. No endless knobs is a dealbreaker though. I don't understand how manufacturers 'refuse' to make this a standard with MIDI controllers, because it defeats the purpose of having a MIDI controller. Am I asking too much?

It makes no sense. The akai endless encoders with the LED lights around them are so good for knowing where that knob currently is.

It takes time to new standards to kick in, first the component manfactures need to produce parts that support 2.0

I like regular encoders for the tactile feel of beginning and end points.. with soft takeover they are good.. But I understand the desire of endless encoders, I just don't want to look at them to figure out where I am.

@@ShadowriverUB Whatever you say now will not set me at rest. We have seen this happening in the past many times before with promising ideas and projects. Same with CLAP, a competitor for Steinbergs VST format. I am not seeing any adaption around it. It doesn't seem to be gaining any ground sadly. Remember that MIDI 2.0 has been in developmemt for years now. As long as hardware manufacturers don't implement this more frequently I will stay positive, but sceptical as well.

Always the same with these keyboard controllers. They add one thing and not others. Why no faders? Just 8 non-endless knobs ... half a job really

Can't belive they put pots instead of encoders for the knobs. Which made the main sell point of this keyboard -- control integration, basically useless.

For this price its really sad that the keybed feels kind of cheap. I could live easily without the software-bundle and the build in audio-interface which seems to be part of the too high price. The form-factor of the 61 key version is perfect - with metal-case and better keybed for 499€ I would take it. They missed a big chance imho...

Knobs instead of endless encoders ? Deal breaker. Also, in terms of Ableton and Komplete Kontrol, NI's range of keyboards (S/A series, M32) have much better integration.

Korg, why oh why can I not set the name of a knob per scene? This thing has such nice displays, but in standard CC mode I could not find a way to set a name for a CC! How nice it would be to be able to set what each knob does!

Pretty disappointing that they couldn't add LEDs with catch up on the pots or do endless encoders. I mean the MIDI Fighter Twister perfected this over TEN years ago now and it should just be a standard on all MIDI controllers. I hope they come back strong with a follow up product to address these issues as it feels a little half baked for a £500 board. Such a shame as the Ableton integration is nice, especially with the pre-mapped group macros, which I could see myself using a lot in my workflow.

My thought exactly. Korg could have totally nailed this one but didn't. They should get musicians on board during the early design stages so they get things right. There are plenty of people on KZitem who'd be more than willing to lend a very useful hand for free.

If you’ve never used Komplete Kontrol or other wrapper systems, the trend is to only expose a limited set of parameters for control. If you're hoping to have knob access to every parameter of the plugin, forget it. Nobody except Nektar and Mackie Control has tried to do this without using wrappers. It’s actually not as useful as you might think, because it has the same problem as knobless hardware…menu diving. Handling performance macros in banks of 8 is as far as most controllers go. This is how most digital hardware synths work, a small number of knobs and faders mapped to the most common controls (filter, arp, EGs, FX) and a bank or two of user assignments. In other words, knobs are there for live performance control, not for programming. With very deep plugins, programming with a mouse is often faster. Some DAWs allow controllers to map an encoder to whatever the mouse is currently hovering over. For me, that works faster for programming than menu diving to reach the knob I want.

unless those pots are motorized, why on earth would they not just throw endless encoders on a device thats can swap between plugin parameters, it would be perfect otherwise. If the next iteration has endless encoders, ima buy it in a heartbeat.
