I believe the Jupiter-4was $2895 in 1979. The PolySix was MSRP $1999 to start in 1981, but when Roland came out with the Juno 6 and Juno 60, the price went down. Roland only sold about 4000 Jupiter 4, but Korg sold 30,000 PolySix. The Polysix is cheaper today because there were a lot more of them sold.

As is they are absolutely painful. STOP MAKING SHIT UP. The fucking Jupiter 4 and Polysix have nothing in common whatsoever, they aren't similar in any way, and good god damn dude. This is straight up trash.

I've owned a Jupiter-4 for thirty years and still love and use it. I once owned a Polysix and sold it again within a few weeks or months. I was really disappointed with the lack of a second envelope, and the LFO (called MG) is only sine wave. The LFO on the Jupiter-4 is insane.

I am not a musician but in the mid-80s i owned a PolySix, for a few years, just to explore the creation of different sounds. My goodness, it is a rich, warm sounding instrument, and surprisingly versatile, for having only one oscillator per voice.

I've had 2 Polysix, the best bit about it was the 2044 filter, but the oscs sounded a touch cheap and hollow vs even some DCO synths I had, and it didn't have a lot of range of sounds. I did like it but don't miss it now I have a Prophet 10 Rev 4 which sounds SUBLIME... (imo even better than a Jupiter 8). From these 2 now I'd take the JP-4 as it has more body and overall better tone... similar to my SH-2 but without the 2nd osc (SH-2 is one of the best sounding oscs ever made). The Prophet 5 (and now 10) just sounds better in far more places, can be moodier, smoother, darker, bigger, warmer, more aggressive, more cutting, more present, more punchy than any of the other polys of that time so now I have this they are all dead to me (have owned many of them except Jupiter 8 but have played one of those a few times). The Oberheims (OBX etc) still have a place and a great sound, as does the Memorymoog... but overall for a flexible but great sounding analog poly, the prophet 5 wins for me (5 voices kinda killed it for me in vintage terms but with the new 10s now in the original design that Dave wanted all along it's perfection!)

Greetings, on P6 the LFO can be routed to 1 or 2 destinations. Modwheel is hardwired to VCO and second modulation destination is to yours choice. And honestly P6 isnt really dark (at least my one.. :) ), its actually LOT brighter than Junos (personally cannot compare to J4, never had it in hands). Yours definitely really plays kinda dark, imho needs a recalibration of filters (being this dark I cannot blame on YT compression).

The first sound you demo on the JP4 blows the Poly6 right out of the water...but eventually 4 voice limit rears its head.

I think they are similar in feature sets, but quite different in terms of their vibe of both UI and sonics. The JP4 is not "completely" programmable like the Polysix, which to me is very important,, and not necessarily to the Jupiter's detriment. I'd also say the Korg sounds consistently more "airy" while the Roland sounds more "brassy". For laying down simple analog pads I'd probably pick the Polysix, but for anything else, the Jupiter. If I could only have one it would definitely be the Jupiter, despite its limitations in polyphony and shorter keyboard - it just has personality out the wazoo, and holds its own in a mix.

I have both and I must say, since getting the Prophet 600, the Polysix gets far less use. The P600 (with GliGli mod), is a seriously cool synth. It’s got a lot to offer. What the Polysix does, it does quite nicely but doesn’t really have a huge range of sounds or is particularly inspiring. Not the fastest of envelope generators too. But, there is something nice about it and I also like the arpegiator.

@@asoundlab Absolutely! Although, at almost 52 years old I am perhaps blessed to have a little more money to spend on synths than some of the younger synth lovers out there, but regardless, value is in the eye of the beholder. I paid nearly $6k for a Baloran The River, and that was worth every penny also. It's not just the sound, but the connection that a particular instrument conveys to you....which causes one to want to play it for hours at a time, getting lost in its sound. :)

I would prefer if you could achieve more musical demonstration of synth sounds when presenting an instrument, by watching your attempts it seems to me that a lot of really awesome sounds remain unrevealed to the audience, regardless the type of synth you are presenting. Polysix and Poly61 are mighty machines indeed, but they have rather big problem concerning maintainence: they have loadable batteries that contain very different and much more abbrasive chemicals than replaceable ordinary batteries for keeping internal memory saved. When there is a leekage inside the electronics, the damage is quite considerable, destroying many parts and soldering plates. If purchasing any of them today, it is wise to check this, and to replace the battery as soon as possible with classical, unloadable battery. Roland Jupiter 4 is legendary gear, used much more on numerous recordings, especially with its recognizable sequencer.

The polysix sounds somewhat unrealiable in terms of high/low for a studio mix (and live)... its sounds "loud" , "aggressive" and annoying... if you were to gig with it you'd have a hard time switching presets and not blowing everyone ears or sound annoying while doing so. The jupiter 4 sounds even and stable and compressed in the middle which is what you want for studio and live. The J4 is much more melodic i think. It was also used by MJ on Thriller.

These are really two different generations, and after the PS-series Korg never threw into the poly 'game' very strongly, given the cut nature of Mono/Poly and 800. Thing is, most ANY of the 1st-generation polys are going to be delivering sounds on a level of either a) deficient or b) stupifyingly wondrous (assuming it still works lol), and little in-between. Roland had to put 'their all' into JP-4 as their 1st poly, but Korg had already had enough of that mess and decided to _follow_ /scale down from the Prophet-5 market for their gen2 poly, rather than create in their own way as Roland did with the Jupiter family. I have a top-condition CS-60 and it takes quite a bit of time to get to know it's strengths; instant gratification is not it's strong suit. But when it hits it's sweet spots oh my my MY nothing else can come close - not even my JP-8 or OB-Xa can respond and sound how the CS-60 does. It takes practice, but the musicality of the touch response and UI setup of CS polys were beyond anything else of the time - or frankly, since.

Really you're wasting your time making these vids. You spend over five minutes trying to describe the difference in tone and utterly fail. You've got the keyboards right there and could simply let us HEAR them but NO, that's to complicated for you? It sounds "really cool?" Gosh, I guess we should envy that you could hear that cool sound and we couldn't. What synth do you think DOESN'T sound cool? Or do they ALL sound cool and if so, telling us that this one also sounds cool doesn't really help then does it.
